Clemson upset by Duke as turnovers cost the Tigers

Swinney and the Tigers suffer a brutal loss on the road against Duke to start their 2023 season.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers 2023 season start off on a bad note, with Clemson falling 28-7 on the road to Mike Elko and the Duke Blue Devils.

Things went about as poorly as they could for No.9 Clemson (0-1, 0-1 ACC), who started the game slow on the offensive side of the ball. Duke got the game’s first points on a 22-yard field goal on their first possession. They later extended their lead to 6-0 after a 42-yard field goal to start the second quarter.

Clemson’s only points of the game came in the second quarter as the result of a muffed punt. Starting the drive on the 19-yard line, after a few plays, after a few plays, starting quarterback Cade Klubnik found star running back Will Shipley on an easy 2-yard touchdown pass

It was all Duke from there on as sloppy play, red zone turnovers, and lack of discipline saw the Tigers suffer a brutal second half. Things went about as poorly as they could for the Tigers in this one.

It’s not the start Swinney or Clemson fans wanted for the program.

Clemson Football: How to watch Week 1 vs. Duke

Here is your guide on how to watch Clemson football’s Week 1 matchup against the Duke Blue Devils.

The day has finally arrived as Clemson opens up their 2023 college football season today with a Labor Day matchup against the Duke Blue Devils in Durham.

Every team in college football has a different start to their season. Some start on the easier side of things, facing an FCS opponent to open their season. Others like Florida State and LSU open up against a top-tier opponent under the lights and on the big stage. For the Tigers, it is an ACC matchup against a tough Duke team with a head coach and starting quarterback to follow up their break out in 2022 with a strong season in 2023.

Clemson has the tools to take down Duke and head into the matchup as two-score favorites. Even if they are heavy favorites, it should be a great competition.

With all the hype surrounding the Tigers in 2023, there’s no doubt fans will want to tune in. We’re here to tell you how to watch:

Our staff score predictions for Clemson vs. Duke

The staff made their score predictions for Clemson’s Labor Day matchup with Duke.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football program kick off their 2023 season with an away Labor Day matchup against Duke on Monday, September 4, at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.

The Tigers head into this matchup as two-score favorites over the Mike Elko-led Blue Devils, who have some serious talent, including one of the best quarterbacks in college football, Riley Leonard. Swinney and the No.9 Tigers head to Durham with a new look offense and what is projected to be one of the best defenses in college football.

As we approach the start of the Clemson football season, the Clemson Wire staff has made their score predictions for the Tigers matchup with the Blue Devils. Here is what we are thinking.

Dabo Swinney shows respect to “well-coached” Blue Devils

Ahead of Monday night’s opener against Duke, who won nine games last year. Swinney shared his thoughts on the upcoming game.

Clemson has played Georgia and Auburn in the past decade to start the year, along with three conference games. Duke may not be Georgia, but Dabo Swinney sees them as an excellent season-opener challenge.

Ahead of Monday night’s opener against Duke, who won nine games last year. Swinney shared his thoughts on the upcoming game.

“Duke is an incredibly well-coached team and, you know, a tough opener,” he said.

“Those of you who’ve been around here y’all heard me say many times, I mean, openers are probably the hardest game. I don’t really care who you play. Because it’s again, there are just so many unknowns, especially in today’s world of college football, there are so many unknowns, whether it be coaching changes, personnel, or whatever. So, you have to spend time watching other people, maybe it’s a transfer that came in, so you got to try and figure this guy out.”

Swinney is 3-0 against Duke and 15-3 in season openers but with the new transfer rules, it leaves room for strange things to happen in the first few weeks of the season.

“You’d feel a lot better if you were coming off a couple of preseason games, right? Where you had a much better feel for your own team in a game situation. So definitely a tough opener and then you throw in the fact it’s on the road, and it’s a conference game.”

USA TODAY Sports expert picks for Clemson vs. Duke heavily favor the Tigers

USA TODAY Sports experts are all on the same page for Clemson vs. Duke.

College football is back, and we anxiously await September 4 and the return of Clemson football.

The Tigers have a Labor Day matchup with the Mike Elko and the Duke Blue Devils, which some years wouldn’t be a major concern for a program such as Clemson. Times change, and Duke has a great roster with top-tier head coaching coming off an ACC Coach of the Year first season with a program and home-field advantage against the Tigers.

Even so, this is a completely different Clemson football team we’ll see in 2023 than we did in 2022. Cade Klubnik is now under center, and new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley is exactly the type of coach the Tigers needed to turn things around on the offensive side of the ball.

The question is, how will they look in their first matchup of the season? A few see this as a game where Clemson could be on upset alert, but USA TODAY Sports experts don’t seem to believe so. In their Week 1 predictions, all six experts making picks chose the Tigers to win the game.

On paper, Clemson has more talent on both sides of the ball and should handle their business against the Blue Devils. The thing is, games aren’t played on paper, and Duke has a quarterback and head coach who can will their teams into a serious battle with the Tigers.

From my perspective, this matchup simply comes down to the Clemson offense. If Klubnik shows up and shows out with Riley, Will Shipley, and Phil Mafah do what they do best on the ground, and the offensive line and receivers put together a serviceable performance, Clemson should win comfortably.

This matchup is a great Week 1 test and an exciting game for college football fans.

Dabo Swinney Shares what he DON’T LIKE about Wallace Wade Stadium

We’re officially less than one week away from the season-opener between Clemson and Duke, and thanks to coach Swinney, we get some locker room trash talk.

We’re officially less than one week away from the season-opener between Clemson and Duke, and thanks to coach Swinney, we get some locker room trash talk.

“The other unique thing about (the stadium) that I do not like, and nobody likes that plays at Duke, is you have to — I mean, it’s like a two- or three-minute walk,” Swinney said on the latest edition of Tigers Call. “It’s a long way to get to the locker room. A long way. And in college football, you barely have enough time to go to the bathroom and talk for 30 seconds in there, and it’s time to go again.”

This is the Tigers’ first trip to Duke since 2012, and the school made a few changes.

Duke completed a $100 million stadium renovation in 2017. The renovation included removing the running track, adding premium seating and luxury suites, and improving operations facilities.

Swinney is excited to see the new upgrades, but the most essential upgrade hasn’t happened.

“Everybody has talked about how nice it is and what a great job they’ve done with the improvements,” Swinney said. “But I did ask about the locker room journey and that is, unfortunately, I think, still the case.
