Clemson takes the series as they run rule Boston College

Clemson takes the series with big win over Boston College.

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 16/16 Clemson Tigers scored at least one run in four consecutive innings, including five in the fourth and three in the fifth, to run-rule Boston College, 10-0, in five innings to clinch the series victory on Saturday. This is the second run-rule for the Tigers during the series and ninth of the season, while also marking the eighth shutout of 2024.

The Tigers offense exploded for 14 hits in the five-inning performance. This is the seventh time in 2024 Clemson has tallied double-digit hits, marking the second-most hits in a game this season trailing only the series finale against NC State where the Tigers finished with 15. Redshirt senior Arielle Oda led the team going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior Maddie Moore followed going 3-for-4 with one RBI. In total, seven Tigers produced at least one hit, with Valerie Cagle, Alex Brown and Alia Logoleo adding two each. Cagle finished the game with four RBIs, including three off a walkoff home run, and two runs.

In the bottom of the second inning, Clemson took a 1-0 lead after Oda bunted a two-out single for a base hit. Brown tripled down the right field line to plate Oda and give the Tigers the lead. Clemson added another run in the third inning after McKenzie Clark singled and advanced to second as Valerie Cagle was hit by a pitch. Logoleo tallied an RBI single to left field that allowed Clark to score to put Clemson up 2-0 after three.

Boston College looked to get on the board in the fourth getting its leadoff runners on with no outs. Clemson made a pitching change from starter Brooke McCubbin to Regan Spencer, who made three-quick outs to force the Eagles to leave them stranded.

Clemson picked up steam in the bottom of the fourth after Oda and Brown clocked back-to-back singles to open the frame. Moore notched her RBI with a single up the middle that plated Oda from second. Cagle followed with her first RBI hit of the day with a shot into right field to score Brown, and Logoleo executed a squeeze bunt to score Clark in the next at bat. With two on and two out, Lindsey Garcia ripped a single up the middle that had both Cagle and Logoleo scoring to make it 7-0 after four.

Oda kept things rolling in the fifth with a leadoff single. Moore tallied her third hit of the day with a single through the left side. In an attempt to steal, Moore was ruled out on the play but it was overturned after review due to obstruction by BC’s shortstop. Clark joined her on the basepath following a walk to put two on with two out. Cagle stepped to the plate and drove an 0-2 pitch 268 feet out of left field to secure the 10-0 run-rule win. This was Cagle’s sixth home run of 2024 and 65th of her career.

McCubbin got the start in the circle this afternoon and pitched three innings before Spencer closed out the game and picked up her first save of the season. Spencer pitched two innings as she faced eight hitters, tallied three strikeouts and only allowed one hit.

Clemson falls to South Carolina in a 12-inning battle

Clemson fell to South Carolina after a hard-fought 12-innings.

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson Softball battled back to force extras, but ultimately fell to South Carolina, 6-4, in 12 innings. The extra-inning loss drops the No. 11/11 Tigers to 21-7 on the year, while the No. 23/25 Gamecocks improve to 22-7.

Clemson finished with 12 hits, including two from both McKenzie Clark and Grace Hiller. Clark also led the Tigers with two RBIs, while Alex Brown and Alia Logoleo clocked one apiece.

Regan Spencer started in her third game in the last week. She threw 68 pitches in five innings of work with two strikeouts. The Gamecocks got on the board early with Spencer in the circle, taking a 2-0 lead after they capitalized on a throwing error by the Tigers. Both runs were unearened.

Clark responded with a two-run homer sent 255 feet out of right field in the bottom half of the inning to even things at two-all. Her home run in the first inning marked the fifth first-inning homer the Tigers have hit in the last four games dating back to the North Carolina series opener. It also marked the ninth homer Clemson has hit all-time against the Gamecocks in only the sixth meeting between the two programs.

South Carolina reclaimed the lead in the top of the third off a solo home run that would hold the Gamecocks’ lead until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Freshman Kylee Johnson spurred the Tigers in the sixth with a single to kickoff the inning. After Arielle Oda drew a walk and Clark singled to the second baseman, Clemson had the bases loaded with only one out to bring Logoleo to the plate. Logoleo sent the second pitch of her at bat deep into center for a sac fly that plated Johnson from third to make it three-all.

Following great defensive work by the Tigers in the top of the seventh, and a lights-out pitching performance by left-handed relief pitcher Millie Thompson, the Tigers shut down the Gamecocks’ chance of rebuttal. Clemson got one runner on off a fielding error by South Carolina in the bottom of the seventh, but would leave her stranded as Clemson headed to its fifth extra-inning game of 2024 with the ballgame tied, 3-3.

Clemson had its best look to score in the 10th inning after Hiller notched a one-out double into the gap in left center. Johnson followed with a walk, but South Carolina ended the inning with back-to-back outs to leave a runners stranded at first and third. Thompson followed in the top of the 11th with two strikeouts, including one to end the inning, for her sixth of the game and to keep it even at 3-3.

South Carolina claimed the lead in the top of the 12th. With the bases loaded, a slow roller allowed for a run to score, and the Gamecocks added two insurance runs before the Tigers could end the inning. Clemson attempted to push back in the bottom half of the inning after Aby Vieira reached on a fielding error by South Carolina’s shortstop, and Hiller tallied her second hit of the evening with a shot to left field to put two on with two out. Alex Brown came up with an RBI single to score Julia Bomhardt, who was running for Vieira, from second, but the Gamecocks were able to pick up the final out to win, 6-4.

Thompson finished her outing with 6.1 innings pitched. She threw 78 pitches (60 strikes) with seven strikeouts, one shy of her season high, but falls to 4-1 on the season. Junior Brooke McCubbin pitched the final 0.2 innings.

Thompson, Johnson lead Clemson to an ACC win over North Carolina

Clemson picks up another win over North Carolina.

CLEMSON, S.C. – Behind a complete-game shutout by Regan Spencer in the circle and home runs by Kylee Johnson and Alex Brown, the No. 12/14 Tigers improved to 19-6 (3-1 ACC) after defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels (20-5, 2-2 ACC) on Friday evening in McWhorter Stadium.

Spencer continued her hot streak in the circle, dealing 80 pitches (53 strikes) with three strikeouts to earn the win, her fourth of the season. She allowed only five hits through her 7.0 innings of work without conceding a walk.

Johnson had a breakout game, tallying two solo home runs in a single game. She sent the first one out of the park in left field in the bottom of the second and followed it with a leadoff home run out of right center to open the bottom of the fourth. She finished the evening 2-for-3 to tally the first multi-hit game of her career and to become the second freshman this season to hit two home runs in their first two plate appearances, joining Julia Knowler’s season-opening performance. She becomes only the fourth freshman in program history to tally multiple home runs in a game joining Knowler, Valerie Cagle and Alia Logoleo.

Another Tiger that went the distance was junior Alex Brown. The former Tar Heel kicked off scoring for the Tigers in the first with a second-pitch home run driven out of right field. This was her second home run and 28th run scored of the season. She finished the evening at the plate going 2-for-4 for her 10th multi-hit game.

The two additional runs scored came out sac flies by both Aby Vieira and Lindsey Garcia. Vieira clocked hers off a bases-loaded situation in the first. She flied out to left field to score Arielle Oda, who tallied a hit of her own earlier in the inning. Garcia’s sac fly came in the third inning after Maddie Moore drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a double by Vieira. Garcia flew out to left to score Moore, giving Garcia her sixth RBI of 2024 and Moore her 12th run.

Clemson drops a heartbreaker to Tennessee in a top-10 matchup

Clemson softball dropped another top-10 matchup in extra innings on Tuesday.

John Rittman and the No. 8/9 ranked Tigers were dealt another heartbreaking extra innings loss on Tuesday.

A week removed from a 2-1 loss against No. 3 Georgia in extra innings, Clemson fell to another top-10 team in extras. This time, it was No. 9/8 Tennessee who dealt the Tigers a loss, falling to the Volunteers 2-1 at McWhorter Stadium in Clemson.

In the nail-biting ninth-inning clash, the Volunteers’ Sophia Nugent sealed the deal with a clutch double to centerfield, bringing home Rylie West for the decisive run against Clemson’s ace Valerie Cagle. Despite Cagle’s impressive 10 strikeouts, she couldn’t stave off the loss, allowing only five hits throughout the nine innings. On the other end, Karlyn Pickens secured the win for Tennessee after a solid six-inning stint, conceding just three hits.

Tennessee initially took the lead in the third inning with Kiki Milloy’s double down the right-field line, bringing in Taylor Pannell. Clemson fought back, leveling the score in the fourth inning when Julia Bomhardt crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Despite both teams squaring up in the fourth, the deadlock persisted until the end, culminating in missed opportunities for Clemson in the eighth inning.

Looking ahead, Clemson gears up to host the Tiger Invitational, kicking off with a doubleheader against Minnesota on Thursday.
