The Clemson Insider is taking a look at the rest of the regional field before the games start Friday at McWhorter Stadium. Clemson, the regional’s top seed, will take on No. 4 seed UNC Wilmington at noon followed by a matchup between No. 2 seed Auburn and No. 3 seed Louisiana.

Louisiana

Coach: Gerry Glasco (fifth season at Louisiana and overall)

Record: 45-11 (24-3 Sun Belt)

Most recent postseason appearance: 2021 Baton Rouge Regional

The skinny: The Ragin’ Cajuns are as hot as any team in the sport heading into regional play. Fresh off a Sun Belt regular-season title and a third straight conference tournament championship, Louisiana is riding a season-high 13-game winning streak and has won 22 of its last 23 games dating back to early April. Louisiana, which has won 90 games the past two seasons, pushed LSU to a winner-take-all game in the Baton Rouge Regional a season ago, so the Ragin’ Cajuns don’t figure to be easily rattled by this week’s environment. And it’s hard to find many flaws within a team that leads the Sun Belt in pitching (2.05 earned run average), hitting (.346 average) and home runs (78) while ranking third in fielding percentage (.963).

Names to know: Jourdyn Campbell ( team-best .409 average, 10 HRs), Alexa Langeliers (.370, team-high 13 HRs, 42 RBIs), Maddie Hayden (.365, eight doubles, 27 stolen bases), Meghan Schorman (1.73 ERA in 33 appearances, 165 strikeouts in 121 ⅔ innings)

Auburn

Coach: Mickey Dean (fifth season at Auburn; 16th overall)

Record: 39-15 (11-13 SEC)

Most recent postseason appearance: 2021 Tallahassee Regional

The skinny: Auburn finished 10th in the SEC during the regular season, cooling off after a hot start. The Tigers won 24 of their first 25 games before dropping four of their final six SEC series. Auburn has lost five straight games entering regional play, but the Tigers rank in the top 5 in the SEC in hitting (.303 team average) and pitching (2.64 earned run average). It’s been a struggle away from home, though, for the Tigers, who are 12-11 in games played outside of Auburn, including just a 7-9 mark in true road games. Power-hitting first baseman Bri Ellis, the SEC’s Freshman of the Year, is as dangerous as any player in this regional.

Names to know: Ellis (.300 average, 18 HRs, 45 RBIs), Carlee McCondichie (.346; team-high 44 hits), Makayla Packer (.328; 18 of 21 on stolen-base attempts), Maddie Penta (1.77 ERA in 40 appearances; 258 strikeouts in 182 innings)

Hosting a regional a ‘dream’ come true for Clemson softball

If it’s validation Clemson’s softball team was looking for, the Tigers have it.

Clemson has won 83 games over the last two seasons, which have included an ACC regular-season title a year ago and back-to-back trips to the conference tournament title game. After getting passed up to host a regional last season, the Tigers’ status as one of the top programs going nationally right now was cemented Sunday when Clemson got the nod to host.

The Tigers, the 10th overall seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament, will start what they hope is the road to the Women’s College World Series on Friday when they host UNC Wilmington in the first-ever Clemson Regional.

“I think when we got past Tuscaloosa’s regional, we let out a sigh of relief,” shortstop Alia Logoleo said, referencing the regional Clemson was sent to last season as a No. 2 seed. “We were so blown away to see our name pop up (during Sunday’s selection show), especially with the number that was in front of it.”

Not bad for a program that was literally dirt and rubble this time three years ago. That’s when Clemson’s first and only coach to this point, John Rittman, was taking recruits around campus in hardhats, showing them the site at which McWhorter Stadium and other team facilities would be built.

Seeing how the Tigers didn’t play their first-ever softball game until the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Rittman was simply selling potential at the time.

“Certainly our goal was to shock the world when we started this program,” Rittman said. “We had a dream and we had a vision. We’ve worked very hard to get to where we are at. There’s been a lot of effort put into this program not only from players and coaches but the administration, the president and the athletic director.”

Most of all, Rittman said it’s a testament to the players that have decided to buy in for the last three years that the program is well ahead of schedule. Clemson won 19 of the first 27 games it played before the 2020 season was eventually canceled in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The Tigers went 44-8 and won the ACC regular-season crown in 2021 and are now just one win away from making it back-to-back 40-win seasons.

“If you dream it, sometimes it comes true,” Rittman said. “And that was our dream from the start, to be competitive right away. Obviously had no idea success would come this quick.”

The program’s upward trajectory has fast-tracked to the first regional it’s ever hosted in just its second full season. Postseason softball has quickly arrived in Clemson, and Rittman said he’s eager to show fans who may not be familiar with the program’s progress what all the fuss is about.

“It’s really an exciting time for our program,” Rittman said. “We’re three years in our existence, and to have an opportunity to host a regional, I’m just so proud of our team, our coaching staff, our support staff. It’s a huge honor to host a regional and to be one of the best 16 teams in the country. And to be able to showcase our wonderful facility, our great fans and just what we’ve built here.”

Clemson softball announced as NCAA Regional host for the first time in program history

Clemson softball makes history

In just their third year as a program, Clemson (39-15) softball will be hosting postseason softball for the first time.

After falling in the ACC championship game for the second consecutive season, there were doubts that this could happen. However, the Tigers found out their fate Sunday as the selection show announced that Clemson would be hosting a regional for the first time in program history.

Sunday’s selection show saw Clemson earning the 10th overall seed in the 64-team tournament, hosting a double-elimination regional that will include UNC Wilmington (32-13), Auburn (39-15), and Louisiana (45-11). Though they ended the with a loss in the ACC championship, the Tigers’ hot end to the season earned the team a No.8 ranking in NCAA’s RPI rankings.

The Tigers will open up play against UNC-Wilmington on Friday, at McWhorter Stadium at noon.

Postseason softball is coming to Clemson.

The Tigers found out their NCAA Tournament fate Sunday after making a run to the ACC tournament championship game for the second straight season. But unlike last year, Clemson won’t be traveling to begin NCAA Tournament play.

For the first time in the program’s brief history, the Tigers will play host to a regional. Clemson is the 10th overall seed in the 64-team tournament, which was revealed during the NCAA selection show Sunday night. The Tigers may have to travel for a super regional since they’re not a top-8 seed depending on how the rest of the bracket shakes out, but Clemson first has to get out of a double-elimination regional that includes UNC Wilmington, Auburn (39-15) and Louisiana (45-11).

Clemson will open regional play against UNC Wilmington (32-13) on Friday at noon at McWhorter Stadium.

The Tigers’ regional host nod comes in just their second full season as a program and third overall. Clemson is making its second straight tournament appearance after playing in the Tuscaloosa Regional a season ago. But after failing to get out of that regional, the Tigers have never advanced to a super regional, giving the program an opportunity to make even more postseason history this year.

Clemson enters the tournament with some momentum, vaulting to No. 8 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings last week even with its loss to Florida State (No. 3 RPI) in Saturday’s ACC tournament final. The Tigers have won six of their last seven games and five straight at home dating back to April 16. Clemson is 22-5 at McWhorter Stadium this season and won three of its four ACC home series, including a sweep of Georgia Tech in its final home league series last month.

The Tigers are led offensively by outfielder McKenzie Clark (team-high .327 average) and shortstop Alia Logoleo (14 home runs and 43 RBIs, both team-highs). Of course, the Tigers also one of the nation’s top two-way players in sophomore Valerie Cagle, who’s hit 12 homers with 40 RBIs and has a 2.05 earned run average in 146 ⅔ innings pitched.

Clemson’s softball team won’t have to wait long to see if it will make more postseason history.

The selection show for the NCAA Division I softball tournament will be held Sunday. The 64-team field — 32 automatic bids to conference tournament champions and 32 at-large berths — will be announced starting at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

That’s when the Tigers (39-15) will find out if they are a top-16 seed in the tournament, which is set to begin Friday. That’s the designation Clemson needs to host a regional, which would mark a first for the program in just its third year of existence if it happens.

Clemson certainly has a resume that stacks up. The Tigers, who played in their first-ever regional last season, began the week ranked in the top 20 of numerous polls before boosting their resume with a couple of wins this week over teams ranked in the top 20 of the NCAA’s RPI ratings.

The fifth-seeded Tigers advanced to the ACC tournament final by beating Notre Dame on Thursday and No. 2 Virginia Tech on Friday, a win that bumped their RPI to eighth before Saturday’s game. But, like last season, Clemson enters Selection Sunday without a conference tournament championship to its name.

The Tigers fell to Florida State in the tournament final, a year after losing to Duke in the same game. Clemson also didn’t win the ACC’s regular-season championship, something the Tigers did last season when they were sent to the Tuscaloosa Regional as the No. 2 seed. But the metrics are high this season on Clemson, which won 16 of its 27 games against ACC competition.

Regardless of where the Tigers play next, they’re entering the postseason with some momentum despite Saturday’s loss. Clemson has won six of its last seven games.

Clemson softball falls short in ACC softball championship game

Sixth inning rally sinks Tigers’ ACC championship run

Clemson dealt with another heartbreaking ACC championship loss Saturday, as the Tigers fell to Florida State 8-6 at Pittsburgh’s Vartabedian Field.

Florida state dealt the Tigers their second straight ACC final loss, as Clemson fell 1-0 to Duke in the game last season.

A four-run sixth inning lifted the Seminoles to victory as Mack Leonard hit a three-run home to give the Tigers opposition a lead. Clemson had their chance to take it back in the seventh but couldn’t put together enough runs.

It is just Clemson softball’s third season and the Tigers’ season isn’t over yet. Heading into the game, Clemson was ranked No.8 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings, so we will wait to see if they get the opportunity to host the program’s first regional.

We will have to wait till Sunday when the NCAA reveals the tournament field before knowing.

It was deja vu for Clemson’s softball team Saturday.

The Tigers advanced to their second straight ACC tournament championship game before suffering the same fate. A four-run sixth inning propelled Florida State to an 8-6 win over the Tigers at Pittsburgh’s Vartabedian Field.

The Tigers lost to Duke in last year’s tournament final. Now Clemson (39-15) will wait to see if they’ve done enough this year to host a regional for the first time in program history. The Tigers, who began the day at No. 8 in the NCAA’s latest RPI rankings, will find out Sunday when the NCAA Tournament field is revealed.

Alia Logoleo got Clemson a little closer in bottom of the seventh with a two-out RBI single, but FSU reliever Kathryn Sandercock got Sam Russ to line out for the final out, continuing Clemson’s wait for its first-ever conference tournament title.

FSU (52-5) plated three runs on three hits in the first against Valerie Cagle to erase Clemson’s 1-0 lead after half an inning, a run the Tigers scored thanks to a pair of Seminole errors. But Clemson answered with a three-spot of its own in the third with two walks and a pair of hits in the frame, knocking FSU starter Mack Leonard out of the circle after just 1 1/3 innings.

McKenzie Clark provided the go-ahead knock with a two-run double off Danielle Watson that gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead. Kalei Harding drew FSU even with solo homer in third before Russ put Clemson back in front with just her third homer of the season, sending the first pitch she saw from Watson deep over the right-center wall.

Clemson had a chance to extend its lead in the top of the sixth with a pair of baserunners in scoring position with two outs, but Sandercock got Cammy Pereira swinging to end the Tigers’ threat. The Seminoles went ahead for good during their next at-bat after Cagle issued a leadoff walk to Hallie Wacaser.

Pinch-runner Amaya Ross scored on Kaley Mudge’s sac fly later in the frame. And after Clemson chose to intentionally walk Harding, FSU’s 3-hole hitter, with two outs, Leonard cleared the bases with a three-run shot to right-center that ended Cagle’s day in the circle.

A day after going the distance against Virginia Tech, Cagle (15-8) allowed seven earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking six in 5 2/3 innings. Sandercock (29-1) got the win for FSU after throwing the final 3 2/3 innings of one-run relief.

Twitter reacts: Clemson softball advances to ACC Championship

Clemson softball is headed to the ACC Championship game and Twitter is excited for the Tigers.

Clemson softball is headed to the ACC Championship game for the second consecutive season after the Tigers took down No. 1 seeded Virginia Tech, 4-1, on Friday.

Clemson shortstop Alia Logoleo led the way offensively in the three-run victory, delivering two solo home runs, the second of which was a bomb to center field. She finished the game batting 2-3 and led the Tigers in hits.

Meanwhile, Clemson pitcher Valerie Cagle had success in the circle, holding the Hokies to four hits in her seven innings pitched and securing the win.

With the victory, Clemson will now play the winner of Florida State and Duke. Clemson was swept by the Seminoles in the regular season and dropped two of its three games against the Blue Devils.

Friday’s victory, however, marks the Tigers’ second ACC Championship game appearance which comes in the first two full seasons in program history.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Clemson’s Tournament victory.

Cagle, Logoleo send Clemson softball to ACC tournament final

For the second straight year, Clemson has advanced to championship weekend at the ACC softball tournament.

In doing so, the Tigers further strengthened their chances of making postseason history.

Valerie Cagle took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, Alia Logoleo belted two home runs, and No. 16 Clemson exacted some revenge with a 4-1 win over No. 2 Virginia Tech on Saturday at Pittsburgh’s Vartabedian Field. The Tigers (39-14), who were swept by the Hokies (41-7) during the regular season, will take on the winner of Friday’s other semifinal between Duke and Florida State in Saturday’s title game.

It’s a chance for Clemson to claim its first-ever conference tournament championship in just its third year as a program. The Tigers lost to Duke in last year’s tournament final.

And if Clemson hadn’t already sewn up an opportunity to host its first-ever regional in the NCAA Tournament, Friday’s result may have done it. The fifth-seeded Tigers, who began the day 11th in the NCAA’s latest RPI rankings, have picked up wins over two of the league’s top four seeds this week after knocking off Notre Dame (No. 18 RPI) in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Virginia Tech, the ACC’s regular-season champ, is ranked second in the RPI.

Cagle certainly did her part Friday. A hit batter in the third inning was the only baserunner Virginia Tech mustered against the Tigers’ star two-way player until Bre Peck led off the home half of the fifth with a single. But Cagle induced a double play and a popup to keep Clemson’s 3-0 lead intact at the time.

Tech scored in the sixth on Emma Ritter’s fielder’s choice, but Cagle got Morgan Overaitis swinging for the final out to limit the Hokies’ damage in the frame. Cagle scattered four hits, struck out two and walked one in the complete-game victory.

Logoleo got Clemson on the board in the second with a solo home run, her team-leading 13th of the season. Clemson’s sophomore shortstop accounted for two of the five hits the Tigers had against Tech ace Emma Lemley, sending another no-doubter to straightaway center in the seventh for some insurance.

McKenzie Clark walked in the fourth and scored on Marissa Guimbarda’s infield single. Arielle Oda’s sac fly in the fifth scored Sam Russ, who tripled earlier in the frame.

The Hokies got the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Cagle got Mackenzie Lawter to ground into a fielder’s choice to snap Tech’s 10-game winning streak. Clemson has won six straight.
