Where Clemson softball ranks in coaches poll entering NCAA Tournament

A look at where the Clemson Tigers softball team is ranked entering the 2024 NCAA Division I Softball Championship/Tournament.

The Clemson Tigers will enter the 2024 NCAA Softball Tournament ranked in the Top 25.

Coach John Rittman’s team is No. 23 in the USA TODAY/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll after the conclusion of conference tournaments over the weekend. It’s the same spot the Tigers landed a week ago before being eliminated in the ACC Tournament by Duke in 10 innings on Friday.

Clemson is 34-17 overall entering the field of 64 that will compete for a berth in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

First up for the Tigers in the postseason is a trip to Alabama for the four-team, double-elimination Tuscaloosa Regional. Clemson will open the regional on Friday against Southeastern Louisiana (45-13). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT. The game can be seen on ACC Network.

Joining Clemson in the Tuscaloosa Regional are the host site Crimson Tide (33-17) and USC Upstate (30-21).

The winner of the Tuscaloosa Regional would advance to the best-of-three Knoxville Super Regional to face Tennessee, should the Volunteers win their regional. Tennessee earned the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Texas (47-7) is the No. 1 overall national seed in addition to being ranked No. 1 in the coaches poll for the sixth consecutive week as tournament play gets set to begin.

The Clemson softball team will enter the ACC Championship/Tournament ranked in two of the major NCAA Top 25 polls.

The Tigers (33-16 overall, 15-9 conference) finished at No. 23 in the final USA TODAY/NFCA Division I Top 25 coaches poll for the regular season. They were also ranked No. 21 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll. Clemson fell out of the new D1Softball Top 25 poll, released Monday.

Texas (45-6) finished the regular season at No. 1 after sweeping Texas Tech. The Longhorns have spent five weeks in the top spot. Tennessee (40-9) moved up to No. 2, and Oklahoma State (44-9) jumped Oklahoma (46-6) for No. 3 after taking two of three from the reigning champion Sooners in Norman over the weekend.

Oklahoma fell to No. 4 with ACC regular-season champion Duke (43-6) finishing at No. 5. Duke clinched its first ever ACC regular season championship over the weekend.

Clemson will face Virginia in a No. 4 vs. 5 seed matchup Tuesday in Durham at Duke Softball Stadium in the ACC Softball Championship/Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. EDT. The game can be seen on ACC Network.

Movement at the top of final regular season NCAA softball poll

There was a shakeup in the top 10 of the final Softball America regular season Top 25 poll.

While Texas (45-6) stayed at No. 1 for the fourth consecutive week after a series sweep of Texas Tech, Tennessee (40-9) moved up to No. 2 and Oklahoma State (44-9) climbed two spots to No. 3.

The Cowgirls jumped two spots after winning two of three at Oklahoma in Norman over the weekend. The Sooners (46-6) are reigning national champions and had been ranked No. 2 prior to this week.

Clemson was unranked for the fourth straight week in Softball America’s poll ahead of conference tournament action. The Tigers ended their regular season by winning two of three games at Louisville to finish at 33-16 overall and 15-9 in the ACC. They earned the No. 4 seed in the ACC Softball Championship/Tournament.

Duke (44-6, 20-4) was the highest-ranked ACC team at No. 5 after clinching the first ACC regular-season championship in school history over the weekend to secure the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Florida State (41-13) fell five spots to land at No. 16 in Softball America’s poll. Virginia Tech (39-11-1) was the only other ranked ACC school at No. 18.

The Tigers took two of three from Louisville over the weekend to close out their regular season with a series victory in ACC play.

Coach John Rittman’s team ended the regular season 33-16 overall and 15-9 in conference action. That was enough to place the Tigers at No. 23 in the coaches poll, compiled by the 32 head coaches who make up the rankings.

In other rankings, the Tigers checked in at No. 22 in the ESPN.com/Softball USA Top 25 rankings. They remained unranked in both the Softball America Top 25 poll and D1Softball poll. Clemson is No. 24 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings.

The top five teams remained the same in the coaches poll from last week with Texas (42-6 overall) staying at No. 1 for the fourth consecutive week. Oklahoma (45-4) stayed at No. 2 with Tennessee (37-8) at No. 3, Oklahoma State (42-8) at No. 4, and Duke (39-6) at No. 5.

The Blue Devils were once again the highest ranked ACC team in the coaches poll and one of four league members in this week’s rankings. ACC leader Florida State rose four spots to land at No. 12 after another 4-0 week. Virginia Tech fell three spots to No. 16.

The SEC led the way with 10 teams ranked in the coaches poll.

Next up for Clemson is the ACC Tournament, scheduled to begin May 9 in Durham. Official seeding for the tournament will be finalized after the weekend.

For the third consecutive week, coach John Rittman’s team was unranked in the new Softball America Top 25 poll, released Monday, April 29.

The Tigers won two of three games in their final regular-season series at Louisville over the weekend to finish at 33-16 overall and 15-9 in the ACC — fourth in conference standings.

The top nine teams in Softball America’s poll remained the same as last week. Texas (42-6) stayed at No. 1 for the third consecutive week after a 4-0 week. Oklahoma (45-4) held at No. 2 after going 3-0. Tennessee (No. 3, 37-9), Texas A&M (No. 4, 39-9), and Oklahoma State (No. 5, 42-8) rounded out the top five.

Duke (44-6, 20-4) was the highest-ranked ACC team in Softball America’s poll at No. 6. The Blue Devils concluded their regular season over the weekend by sweeping last-place NC State.

ACC leader Florida State (40-10 overall) was ranked 11th. Virginia Tech (38-1-1) was the only other ranked ACC school at No. 18.

Next up for Clemson is the ACC Tournament, scheduled to begin May 9 in Durham. Official seeding for the tournament has yet to be finalized.

Florida State currently sits atop the ACC at 18-3 in conference play with one series remaining in the regular season (beginning Friday at Syracuse). The Seminoles have won 14 straight entering the week and 22 of their last 23 dating back to March 23.

There’s good news and bad news for Clemson softball in terms of Top 25 rankings for Week 12.

The Tigers went 3-1 last week with wins over Winthrop and winning two of three from Notre Dame in ACC play. That was enough to keep coach John Rittman’s team at No. 22 in the USA TODAY Sports/NCFA Division I Top 25 coaches poll, compiled by the 32 head coaches who make up the rankings.

Clemson fell one spot in the coaches poll from last week.

The Tigers fell out of D1Softball’s Top 25 poll, also released Tuesday. It’s the second major poll that Clemson was shut out of this week; the team was also unranked in Monday’s new Softball America Top 25 rankings.

Just as importantly, Clemson is ranked No. 23 in the RPI rankings. Those rankings hold more weight when the selection committee decides its seedings for the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament.

The top four teams were the same in both the coaches poll and D1Softball’s poll with Texas (38-6 overall) remaining No. 1 for the third consecutive week. Oklahoma (42-4) stayed at No. 2 while Tennessee (34-8) moved up to No. 3 in both polls.

Oklahoma State (39-8) shot up to No. 4 in both polls.

In D1Softball’s poll, UCLA jumped all the way to No. 5 after a series sweep of previously fifth-ranked Stanford. The Bruins (27-9) climbed 12 spots in D1Softball’s poll.

Duke (39-6) checked in at No. 5 in the coaches poll.

The Blue Devils were the highest ranked ACC team in either poll and one of four league members in this week’s rankings. Aside from Clemson at No. 22, the ACC also featured Virginia Tech (No. 13) and Florida State (No. 16) in this week’s Top 25.

The SEC led the way with 10 teams ranked in both polls.

Clemson is scheduled to close out the regular season portion of their schedule this weekend when they travel to Louisville for a three-game series beginning Friday. The Tigers are tied for fourth place in ACC standings with Virginia. They trail conference leader Florida State (15-3), Duke (17-4), and Virginia Tech (17-4).

It’s the second straight week that coach John Rittman’s team was unranked in the poll — although it certainly wasn’t for a lack of effort.

Clemson (31-15 overall, 13-8 conference) blanked Winthrop, 4-0, in its midweek game last week at McWhorter Stadium and won two of three games at Notre Dame.

Texas (38-6) stayed at No. 1 in Softball America’s poll for the second straight week while Oklahoma (42-4) held at No. 2. Tennessee (34-8) moved up one spot to No. 3 while Texas A&M (37-9) climbed three spots to No. 4. Oklahoma State (39-8) rounded out the top five.

The ACC had four teams ranked in the new poll. Duke (39-6) was the highest-ranked conference school at No. 6. Virginia Tech (No. 15), Florida State (No. 16), and Miami (No. 25) were also ranked.

Clemson will travel to Louisville to conclude its regular season schedule beginning Friday. After that, the Tigers will prepare for the 2024 ACC Softball Tournament, which begins Wednesday, May 8 in Durham.

Clemson is currently tied for fourth in ACC standings with Virginia. The Tigers trail conference leader Florida State (15-3 conference), Duke (17-4), and Virginia Tech (17-4).

The Tigers (28-14 overall, 11-7 ACC) had been ranked No. 15 two weeks earlier. Coach John Rittman’s team was swept by Duke over the weekend at McWhorter Stadium. The fourth-ranked Blue Devils (37-4) were ranked No. 1 in the nation by Softball America last week.

Texas (35-6) stayed at No. 1 in D1Softball’s rankings after another 4-0 week. The top three rankings remained the same as last week with Oklahoma (38-4) holding at No. 2 and Stanford (34-7) checking in at No. 3.

Tennessee (32-7) moved up one spot from No. 6 to round out the top five. Washington placed sixth with Oklahoma State falling three spots to No. 7. LSU, Florida, and Missouri rounded out the top 10 in D1Softball’s rankings.

No. 15 Virginia Tech and No. 16 Florida State were the only other ACC programs ranked by D1Softball.

Clemson is scheduled to face Winthrop in non-conference play Tuesday at McWhorter Stadium before traveling to Notre Dame for a weekend series. Tuesday’s game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX).
