The winner of the double-elimination tournament will advance to a super regional. So what does the Tigers’ competition look like?

The Clemson Insider is taking a look at the rest of the regional field before the games start Friday at McWhorter Stadium. Clemson, the regional’s top seed, will take on No. 4 seed UNC Wilmington at noon followed by a matchup between No. 2 seed Auburn and No. 3 seed Louisiana.

TCI has already broken down Auburn and Louisiana. An interactive tournament bracket can be found here.

UNC Wilmington

Coach: Kristy Norton (10th season at UNCW and overall)

Record: 32-13 (11-8 Colonial Athletic Association)

Most recent postseason appearance: N/A

The skinny: Making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, UNC Wilmington is new to all of this. The Seahawks finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association during the regular season before making a surprise run to the first CAA tournament title in program history. After going 3-0 last week, Wilmington is now tied for the third-most wins in a single season in program history and brings a four-game winning streak into regional play. The Seahawks, an aggressive team with nearly twice as many stolen bases (110) as the CAA’s next-closest team (Elon, 65), have already played two games against ACC competition this season, falling to North Carolina and North Carolina State by a combined three runs. Friday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between Wilmington and Clemson.

Names to know: Janel Gamache (team-high .357 average, 20 extra-base hits, seven HRs), Tayler Vitola (.333, 26 stolen bases), Anna Knox (20 stolen bases), Emily Winstead (1.66 earned run average in 26 appearances, .162 opponents’ batting average)

Louisiana

Coach: Gerry Glasco (fifth season at Louisiana and overall)

Record: 45-11 (24-3 Sun Belt)

Most recent postseason appearance: 2021 Baton Rouge Regional

The skinny: The Ragin’ Cajuns are as hot as any team in the sport heading into regional play. Fresh off a Sun Belt regular-season title and a third straight conference tournament championship, Louisiana is riding a season-high 13-game winning streak and has won 22 of its last 23 games dating back to early April. Louisiana, which has won 90 games the past two seasons, pushed LSU to a winner-take-all game in the Baton Rouge Regional a season ago, so the Ragin’ Cajuns don’t figure to be easily rattled by this week’s environment. And it’s hard to find many flaws within a team that leads the Sun Belt in pitching (2.05 earned run average), hitting (.346 average) and home runs (78) while ranking third in fielding percentage (.963).

Names to know: Jourdyn Campbell ( team-best .409 average, 10 HRs), Alexa Langeliers (.370, team-high 13 HRs, 42 RBIs), Maddie Hayden (.365, eight doubles, 27 stolen bases), Meghan Schorman (1.73 ERA in 33 appearances, 165 strikeouts in 121 ⅔ innings)

Auburn

Coach: Mickey Dean (fifth season at Auburn; 16th overall)

Record: 39-15 (11-13 SEC)

Most recent postseason appearance: 2021 Tallahassee Regional

The skinny: Auburn finished 10th in the SEC during the regular season, cooling off after a hot start. The Tigers won 24 of their first 25 games before dropping four of their final six SEC series. Auburn has lost five straight games entering regional play, but the Tigers rank in the top 5 in the SEC in hitting (.303 team average) and pitching (2.64 earned run average). It’s been a struggle away from home, though, for the Tigers, who are 12-11 in games played outside of Auburn, including just a 7-9 mark in true road games. Power-hitting first baseman Bri Ellis, the SEC’s Freshman of the Year, is as dangerous as any player in this regional.

Names to know: Ellis (.300 average, 18 HRs, 45 RBIs), Carlee McCondichie (.346; team-high 44 hits), Makayla Packer (.328; 18 of 21 on stolen-base attempts), Maddie Penta (1.77 ERA in 40 appearances; 258 strikeouts in 182 innings)
