Dabo Swinney gives update on Shelton Lewis, Jeadyn Lucas, Clemson injuries

Here’s what Dabo Swinney said about the health of two of his cornerbacks, Shelton Lewis and Jeadyn Lucas, ahead of Clemson’s season opener against Georgia.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said earlier in the week that he was pleased with his team’s injury status heading into Saturday’s season-opener against No. 1 Georgia.

In his final media availability of the week on Wednesday, Swinney was asked about the status of cornerback Shelton Lewis by The State‘s Chapel Fowler.

Lewis has dealt with a leg injury throughout fall camp, which he first suffered on Aug. 12, The Clemson Insider reported.

“He’s been day to day for the last couple of weeks and he’s still day to day,” Swinney said of the sophomore defensive back. “He’s still getting better every day.”

A four-star cornerback from Stockbridge, Ga., in the class of 2023, Lewis played in seven games for the Tigers a season ago, finishing with two interceptions, including a 46-yard pick returned for a touchdown in Clemson’s’ 42-21 rout over Georgia Tech on Nov. 11. He had seven passes defended as a freshman.

In a follow-up, Swinney said the same “day to day” status applied to cornerback Jeadyn Lukus — and anyone else.

“And me, too,” Swinney said somewhat guardedly. “We’re all day to day around here. Everybody… We’re all day to day, week to week, just hoping that we get another day tomorrow. That’s all I’m hoping for. One day at a time.”

Lukus is entering his junior season after playing in seven games (four starts) a year ago. He had two interceptions and four solo tackles. Lukus was a four-star recruit out of Mauldin (S.C.) High School in 2022.

Should Lewis or Lukus not be fully healthy by Saturday, Clemson will have a variety of backup options to turn to alongside sophomore Avieon Terrell. Freshmen Corian Gipson and Ashton Hampton are two names to keep in mind.

The 14th-ranked Tigers open the season at noon ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The game will be nationally televised on ABC. Sean McDonough (play-by-play), Greg McElroy (analyst) and Molly McGrath (sideline) will have the call for ABC.

Here’s everything else Swinney said during his last media availability before Saturday’s game against Georgia.
