Former Clemson pitcher Spencer Strider has been impressing in the Atlanta Braves organization this season and it appears the call every player dreams of is happening.

Fall practice is officially underway for Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, but the field will look a lot different this time around.

With key pieces of last season’s roster, including Davis Sharpe, Bryce Teodosio, Adam Hackenberg, James Parker, Kier Meredith, and many others having all since moved on from Clemson after last season, the Tigers have some big shoes to fill, but head coach Monte Lee is not worried. In fact, Lee has been pleased with what he has seen so far from this year’s young squad.

“We feel very good with where we’re at,” Lee told the media on Friday. “It’s a very selfless group and I just like the fact, quite honestly, it’s a very low maintenance group right now. It’s a very quiet group, methodical group. They just kinda go about their business and work and you kind of expect that.”

“We lost a lot of older guys that had a lot of personality on the team from last year, so these guys are kind of quietly going about their business and working really hard. It’s been a great pre-fall practice few weeks just with the individual skill work that we’ve been doing. It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of good quality sessions with the players.”

The Tigers are welcoming 19 newcomers this fall and with that comes a need for veteran leadership. With a lot of last year’s team moving onto their next chapters, Clemson will be looking to its veteran group to step up and lead right where they left off.

“Yeah, it’s going to be different,” freshman All-American Caden Grice said. “I’m more of a leader by example, but I’m looking forward to taking on that role as a vocal leader and try to push some of these guys so we can have the greatest season we can.”

Righthander Mack Anglin is also looking forward to taking on a new leadership role in his third season with the Tigers. The redshirt sophomore, who chose to return to Clemson after being drafted in the 13th round of the MLB draft earlier this summer, is excited to take on his new leadership role this season alongside a very talented top-25 incoming recruiting class.

“I’m really glad that it’s finally my time to lead being a junior now,” Anglin said. This young class and even the freshmen from last year, they’re all extremely talented, so it’s been a lot of fun just being back together and taking some younger guys under my wing, kind of showing them the ropes and working to get better every single day.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference and the Charlotte Knights have announced the 2022 ACC Baseball Championship will return to Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina, May 24-29.
Nearly 59,000 fans attended the 2021 ACC Baseball Championship in Charlotte, which ranks as the fifth-highest attendance in tournament history and the highest since 2015.
“We’re excited to have the ACC Baseball Championship return to the city of Charlotte for the second consecutive year,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “The Charlotte Knights, in conjunction with the Charlotte Sports Foundation, Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority and Visit Charlotte, continue to be outstanding partners. Our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans enjoyed a tremendous experience in Charlotte during the 2021 event, and we know that will only continue as we all look forward to our 2022 ACC Baseball Championship.”
The ACC Baseball Championship has been held in the Charlotte region three times with Duke winning the 2021 title, while Georgia Tech won the 2000 championship and Wake Forest captured the 2001 title, with both latter tournaments held in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
“We are very pleased to host the 2022 ACC Baseball Championship at Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte,” stated Charlotte Knights Chief Operating Officer Dan Rajkowski. “We would once again like to thank the ACC for its commitment in bringing this week-long collegiate baseball tournament to our region. We’re also very pleased with the continued support from the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, as well as our great partners at the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority and the Charlotte Sports Foundation.”
“This is incredibly welcome news for a hospitality industry that has been devastated by the effects of the pandemic,” added Tom Murray, Chief Executive Officer, Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. “We’re grateful to the ACC for their continued partnership and the positive impact they’ve had on Charlotte over the years. We look forward to welcoming back the teams and their fans to the Queen City for another memorable ACC baseball championship event.”
Located in Uptown Charlotte, Truist Field opened in 2014 and is the host facility for the Charlotte Knights, a Triple-A minor league baseball team. The stadium hosted the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game and has been the site of more than 25 college baseball games. Stadium capacity is 10,200 and has hosted more than four million fans since opening.
“We look forward to hosting ACC baseball fans in Charlotte this upcoming May,” said Danny Morrison, executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. “The Charlotte Knights, CSF, Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority and Visit Charlotte have been working diligently together to ensure a fist-class experience, and we look forward to welcoming the ACC back to the Queen City.”
Eight ACC teams were selected to compete in the NCAA Tournament, the second-most teams of any conference. The ACC has had at least six teams in the NCAA tournament for 17 straight years. It marked the fifth year since 2010 that at least eight ACC teams have landed spots in the field.
With NC State and Virginia reaching the College World Series, the ACC sent at least one team to Omaha for the 15th consecutive year that the event has been held. It was the 10th time during that time period that multiple conference teams have made the trip to Omaha. A total of 28 ACC teams – nearly a quarter of the total field – have earned CWS berths since 2006.
ACC teams have combined to win at least 17 games in each of the previous 15 NCAA Baseball Championships, including a record 31 games in 2006. The conference won 24 games this past postseason.
Headlined by Louisville’s Henry Davis selected with No. 1 overall pick, 63 ACC student-athletes were selected in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. The Pittsburgh Pirates made Davis the fifth No. 1 overall pick from current ACC schools.

Lee not surprised by Taylor’s early success on the gridiron

Over the first two weeks of the football season, Clemson fans saw flashes of the moxie two-sport standout Will Taylor brings to the gridiron.

For Clemson head baseball coach Monte Lee, seeing Taylor in action for the Tigers has been exciting but also anxiety inducing as he watches his top recruit take some hits.

“On that first punt return where he got smoked out of bounds, I was like, ‘C’mon now.’ I had to get up and walk around the couch to see if he was OK,” Lee joked before the start of fall practice on Friday. “I wanted to try and reach out to somebody on the sidelines, but I figured they don’t have their cell phones on the sidelines.”

Taylor turned down a potential slot in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft to enroll at Clemson as a two-sport athlete in football and baseball.

The freshman athlete showed off his speed this past Saturday with that 51-yard punt return against South Carolina State and did not shy away from contact in the game either. Taylor earned special teams player of the game honors against the Bulldogs and also ran the ball five times for 20 yards.

Taylor’s baseball teammates enjoy seeing one of their own run down the hill on Saturdays.

“I’m sitting there cheering on the Tigers, and then I see my teammate walk out on the field with them,” Caden Grice said. “And he goes out there and is tearing it up. It’s awesome and I love it.”

Redshirt sophomore Mack Anglin also relishes the opportunity to see his teammate on the football field. And Anglin is excited to see Taylor get more work on the diamond this spring.

“It’s been fun watching him over on the football field. He’s a freak athlete, and we are really excited to get him and see what he can do,” Anglin said.

Taylor said he wants to try and pop over to Doug Kingsmore Stadium and participate in fall practice when his football and school schedules allow. But Lee wants to give Taylor space to grow as a football player and student as well as an opportunity to refine his baseball skills.

As for Taylor’s success on the football field so far, Lee is not surprised at all and is excited to see the freshman’s impact in the outfield this spring.

“He is going to show you what he can do. He’s not a big talker,” Lee said. “He’s going to show you what he can do on the football field and baseball field. His early success with the football program does not surprise me one bit. This may develop some arguments among the Clemson fans, but he is an even better baseball prospect.”

Football season has finally arrived. Time to represent your Tigers and show your stripes!

Bad news regarding former Clemson star Seth Beer, who was recently called up to the big leagues by the Arizona Diamondbacks:

Beer had to leave the D-backs’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles on Tuesday night with a dislocated left shoulder.

Making his first MLB start at first base, Beer suffered the injury in the bottom of the first inning when he dove to his left for a ball and landed hard on his left shoulder.

Beer, who was called up by the D-backs last Friday, homered in his first plate appearance against the Seattle Mariners in Seattle that night and had gone 4-for-9 with the homer, a double, a walk, three runs batted in and four runs scored in his first nine at-bats entering Tuesday’s contest.

Beer, a three-time All-American at Clemson, won the Dick Howser Trophy as national player-of-the-year in his freshman season of 2016. In his three-year career at Clemson (2016-18), he hit .321 with 41 doubles, a triple, 56 homers, 177 RBIs, 172 runs, 180 walks against only 98 strikeouts, a .489 on-base percentage and four steals in 188 games.

Beer was drafted in the first round by the Houston Astros after the 2018 season, then was acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019. In three minor league seasons, Beer is hitting .292 with 54 homers and 204 RBIs in 289 games.
