2023 MMA retirement tracker: A list of former UFC champions, legends and more who hung up the gloves

The MMA world already has said goodbye to many retiring fighters in 2023, from former UFC champions to icons of the sport.

MMA is a constantly evolving sport with a revolving door of athletes entering and exiting. Currently, fighters from the era who helped make the sport so popular are beginning to trickle away from competition and hang up their gloves in order to move on to the next chapter in life.

If there’s one thing that’s well known about combat sports retirements, though, it’s that they often don’t last long. The urge to compete, and perhaps more importantly get a payday, will continue to drive fighters back even well beyond their expiration dates.

2023 has seen an uptick in notable fighters announcing they are done with the sport, and we have a list of those who have opted to walk away this year (the list will update as new retirements are announced).

UFC Fight Night 208 post-event facts: Molly McCann’s second spinning elbow makes history

Molly McCann owns two of six spinning elbow knockouts in UFC history after UFC Fight Night 208.

The UFC’s encore in London did not live up to the standards of its visit to the city earlier this year. Nine of the 14 bouts at UFC Fight Night 208 on Saturday at The O2 went to a decision.

The heavyweight main event capped off in disappointing fashion when [autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) suffered a knee injury just 15 seconds into the fight, giving [autotag]Curtis Blaydes[/autotag] (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) a TKO victory.

Claudio Silva injured, out of UFC London matchup against Gunnar Nelson

Claudio Silva is out of UFC Fight Night 204 with an injury, putting the return of Gunnar Nelson in jeopardy.

UFC’s return to London has just taken a hit as the injury bug forced a welterweight matchup off the card.

[autotag]Claudio Silva[/autotag] was set to welcome [autotag]Gunnar Nelson[/autotag] back to action on March 19 at UFC Fight Night 204 at O2 Arena in London, but will be unable to compete at the event due to a knee injury. MMA Junkie confirmed the news following an initial report from MMA Fighting.

Silva (14-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) was hoping to snap a two-fight skid against Nelson (17-5-1 MMA, 8-5 UFC), who has not competed since September 2019. Prior to his recent setbacks, Silva won his first five UFC bouts, including a split decision win over Leon Edwards in 2014.

Nelson, who is on a two-fight skid of his own, may have to wait a little longer to return to action for what was set to be his first bout in nearly two and a half years. Nelson was last in action against Gilbert Burns at UFC on ESPN+ 18, a bout he lost via unanimous decision. At the time of writing, it is unclear if the promotion will seek a replacement opponent to keep him on the card.

With the update, UFC Fight Night 204 includes:

  • Paddy Pimblett vs. Kazula Vargas
  • Arnold Allen vs. Dan Hooker
  • Paul Craig vs. Nikita Krylov
  • Gunnar Nelson vs. opponent TBA

James Krause in for Muslim Salikhov vs. Claudio Silva at UFC on ESPN+ 38

James Krause regularly says he’s ready to step in on short notice for the UFC, and he’ll do it again later this month.

[autotag]James Krause[/autotag] regularly says he’s ready to step in on short notice for the UFC, and he’ll do it again later this month.

Krause (27-8 MMA, 8-4 UFC) will step in as a replacement for [autotag]Muslim Salikhov[/autotag] (17-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) to take on [autotag]Claudio Silva[/autotag] (14-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in a welterweight bout at UFC on ESPN+ 38. MMA Junkie confirmed the news with people close to the booking following an initial report from MMAFighting.com.

UFC on ESPN+ 38 takes place Oct. 17 at Flash Forum at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The card streams on ESPN+.

Krause will be back at welterweight after moving up to middleweight for a short-notice fight against Trevin Giles at at UFC 247 in February. He lost that fight by split decision, and not without controversy, to see a four-fight winning streak snapped.

Silva hasn’t lost since his pro MMA debut in November 2007. He first fought in the UFC in 2014 and had two decision wins over Brad Scott and Leon Edwards. But then he didn’t fight for three and a half years till a May 2018 return with a submission win over Nordine Taleb. He had two more submission wins in 2019 to give him 14 straight wins, but his fight with Krause will be his first in more than 14 months.

Salikhov was looking for his fifth straight win after a submission loss to Alex Garcia in his UFC debut in November 2017. After that setback, he had a TKO win over Ricky Rainey, a knockout of Nordine Taleb and decisions over Laureano Staropoli and Elizeu Zaleski on his way up the level of competition in the welterweight division. Now his quest for five straight is on hold.

With the change, the UFC on ESPN+ 38 lineup now includes:

Claudio Silva tired of flying under radar, wants ranked opponent next at UFC London

Tired of flying under the radar, the streaking Claudio Silva wants a ranked opponent at UFC London next.

[autotag]Claudio Silva[/autotag] quietly has put together a solid winning streak in the UFC’s stacked welterweight division, and thinks it’s about time people started mentioning his name.

Silva (14-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has won all five of his UFC fights, and since coming back from his nearly four-year layoff in 2018 has submitted three straight opponents.

Silva thinks he’s earned the right to face a ranked fighter next, but is not willing to trash talk to get attention. He says it’s the UFC’s job to promote fighters like him who are flying under the radar.

“I think 5-0 in the UFC is something big because it’s difficult for me to do my own media,” Silva told MMA Junkie. “I think the UFC should pay more attention to fighters. We are fighters – we are busy training. We’ve got to train, think about camps, work hard – that’s a difficult thing. Some people, they talk (expletive) and they get all the attention. I think the UFC should promote the fighters more, especially the up-and-comers that have many victories. So definitely, I think I’m under the radar.”

With the UFC announcing its return to London for March 21, Silva, who has spent more than 10 years in the U.K., would like nothing more than to compete on the card – preferably, of course, against a top-ranked fighter.

“Definitely, I would like to fight in March. I can be on the main card in London,” Silva said. “I’ve been living here for 12 years. I beat a lot of big names, good names: Leon Edwards, Nordine Taleb, I beat all those guys – Danny Roberts. I’m definitely a big name in the U.K., so they should give me the main card in London.”

Silva, who’s currently applying for a British passport, has competed in all but three of his pro fights in the U.K., and said the issue is none of the ranked fighters want to fight him in fear of losing their spots.

“I definitely want to fight a top 15 guy, but they don’t want to fight me,” Silva said. “I’m too risky for them. I don’t understand the rankings thing, how I’m going to get a ranked fighter, because they don’t want to fight me. They refuse me right now, so how am I going to get there if they refuse me?

“It’s not an easy situation. I don’t know how to get in the rankings. I know I’m the best fighter, but they just don’t want to lose their position and that’s why they keep avoiding me.”
