Bengals’ inevitable jersey redesign can learn from mistakes of Rams’ new uniforms

The Cincinnati Bengals could learn a thing or two from the Los Angeles Rams.

The Cincinnati Bengals figure to unveil new jerseys sooner than later in the coming years as the Joe Burrow era gets started.

And those in charge of a Bengals uniform redesign would be smart to look at the fire the Los Angeles Rams just started with their own uniform overhaul this week.

And fire — mostly — has a negative connotation.

For those who haven’t seen the Rams’ redesign yet, Rams Wire’s Cameron DaSilva has an excellent breakdown of what went right and wrong.

The widespread reaction is simple: The Rams have a slick new helmet but made some baffling jersey decisions, including odd-looking numbers, design inconsistencies between different home and alternative jerseys, a weird name patch on the front and even just plain weird color schemes.

This reaction seemed to sum it up well:

We’ve long been advocates the Bengals need to get back to simpler designs like this — while leaning heavily into the structure of their color rush jerseys.

So normal jerseys, with numbers and basic elements like this:

Like the Rams, the Bengals don’t need to do much — if anything — to the helmet. But much about the jerseys themselves could get dialed down to match modern times.

As the Rams’ reveal shows, the Bengals won’t be able to please everyone. But avoiding some of the pitfalls like inconsistencies, divisive numbers and name patches on the front will go a long way toward winning over the majority of onlookers.

Should Bengals follow Patriots, redesign jerseys based on color rush uniforms?

What if the Bengals took heavy inspiration from color rush jerseys to do a redesign?

We’ve long argued the Cincinnati Bengals are due for a jersey change.

And we’ve often wondered if the team should draw serious inspiration from its excellent color rush uniforms, which feature a more basic design and lose the blocky number shadows — all while keeping the same classic, can’t miss helmet:

Great look, right?

Monday, the New England Patriots went this route, changing their full-time jerseys to the little-used-but-popular color rush jerseys. It was a little unexpected, given a traditional team like the Patriots decided to sub in an alternate uniform into full-time status.

But so goes ending the Tom Brady era:

The Bengals happen to be ending the Andy Dalton era and starting the Joe Burrow era.

Meaning, it’s the perfect time for a change. And while the team might not want to do something as bold as outright taking the color rush uniform and making it a home or away jersey, taking big inspiration from the color rush should be on the table.

While the Bengals won’t say much about jersey changes right now, one can presume the team is at least exploring the multi-year process.

Where do Cincinnati Bengals uniforms finish in NFL rankings?

Where do the Bengals stripes rank?

With a few teams getting new jerseys this offseason, it’s only right to loop back to a familiar question — where do the Cincinnati Bengals rank?

The Bengals have the iconic helmets, though the jersey design itself has been a point of speculation for fans.

Over at Touchdown Wire, Barry Werner ranked every jersey in the NFL and slotted the Bengals seventh overall:

“The Bengals earn their stripes with the sharp black, orange and white look that plays off one of the coolest helmets in any sport. They roar.”

That’s a surprising ranking. While the helmet alone could carry the Bengals to a top-10 spot in the minds of most, fans have long requested the team consider getting a little more modern and doing away with things like the blocky shadows behind the numbers.

Something more like, say, the excellent color rush offering:

Regardless, the Bengals do seem to have one of the more polarizing jerseys in the NFL.

And this sort of conversation extends to logo usage too, as a vocal element of the fanbase has asked the team to shift from the “B” back to the actual tiger logo.
