Chris Boswell’s training camp struggles flashes back to Steelers 2018 season

The Steelers cannot afford to have bad Chris Boswell in 2024.

Training camp has gotten off to a rocky start for Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell. The normally accurate Boswell has missed four field goals so far at camp, all of which were in the very makable range.

It’s still early and there’s no reason to panic in July. But Boswell’s missing kicks do make us think back to that dreadful 2018 season where nothing went right for Boswell and he was a huge liability to the team.

In 2018, Boswell struggled through 15 games and despite his struggles, the team stuck with him. Boswell had a career-low 65 percent on field goal tries and went 5-for-10 from 40-49 yards.

Meanwhile, backup Matthew Wright has been perfect in training camp. This is Wright’s third stint on the Steelers. He appeared in three games in 2020, going 4-for-4 on field goals. Wright then returned in 2022 and handled the kicking duties in four games. He went 12-for-14 on field goals including one over 50 yards.
