Here is a breakdown of the numbers in each year according to Over the Cap.

The Panthers have officially signed running back Christian McCaffrey to a four-year extension that will keep him in Carolina through the 2025 season. The new deal makes McCaffrey the highest-paid running back in the history of the NFL.

We now have some more details about the structure of McCaffrey’s contract. According to Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk, the extension includes about $30 million in guarantees, including a $21.5 million signing bonus. Here is a breakdown of the numbers in each year according to Over the Cap.

We are happy for McCaffrey, who is undoubtedly the best running back in the league right now and deserves to be paid like it.

That being said, six years in the NFL is an eternity – especially at the running back position. While he is a special athlete, the chances that McCaffrey will still be playing at the same high level he did in 2019 in a few seasons are slim, even if he’s not still averaging 400+ touches a year.

If the Panthers were truly committed to analytics the way team owner David Tepper says, they probably would have extended right tackle Taylor Moton or wide receiver Curtis Samuel first. At the very least, they could have picked up McCaffrey’s fifth-year option and kicked the can down the road another two years. Now, they’re locked in and committed.

Panthers Wire Roundtable: What to make of Christian McCaffrey’s mega-deal?

Christian McCaffrey: Panthers Wire team comments on what to make of his four-year contract extension.

The Panthers have made Christian McCaffrey the richest running back in NFL history, signing him to a four-year, $64 million extension, locking him in through the 2025 season.

Let’s check in with our team at Panthers Wire and see how they are feeling about McCaffrey’s new mega-deal.

Anthony Rizzuti

Yes, Christian McCaffrey is different. Christian McCaffrey is a game changer. Christian McCaffrey is really damn good. But he’s still a running back. Trying to justify a major investment at the position is almost always a fruitless endeavor, especially for a team with so many voids left to fill. Remember, we’re still in the same offseason where Los Angeles and Arizona pressed the eject button on Todd Gurley and David Johnson. While McCaffrey may not have the pre-existing injury history as Gurley, banking on the fact that he’s gone relatively unscathed through two seasons of high usage isn’t a wise bet.

Odds are that all those carries and targets will catch up to him eventually, likely leaving Carolina with a different player come Year 2 or 3 of this extension. If team owner David Tepper is consulting his analytics on this decision, it’s less of a football algorithm and more of a business one. The math probably looks something like subtracting McCaffrey, Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly and Greg Olsen the same year = 0 butts in the seats.

Analysis: Extension makes Christian McCaffrey the foundation of Panthers’ offense

Panthers make Christian McCaffrey the foundation of their offense with four-year extension.

[jwplayer v4EqnNpa]

Last week, Panthers coach Matt Rhule told the media in a Zoom call that Christian McCaffrey is a player that you can build a team around.

Clearly he wasn’t just blowing smoke.

Today, Adam Schefter at ESPN reported that Carolina has signed McCaffrey to a four-year contract extension that makes him the highest-paid running back in the history of the NFL.

The deal will pay McCaffrey $64 million over the course of the deal. That number is particularly interesting because it’s exactly $1 million more than the three-year contract quarterback Teddy Bridgewater just signed. While a lot goes into negotiating every deal and every player’s situation is unique, the decision says alot about what kind of team Rhule is trying to build.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Panthers plan to run McCaffrey into the ground the way the Seahawks do with their backs. In fact, it would come as a surprise given the way offensive coordinator Joe Brady ran things during his one year at LSU.

Then again, giving McCaffrey more money than Bridgewater makes it clear that the team considers him to be the foundation of their offense – not the starting quarterback. That’s quite an interesting dynamic in an era that’s soon to see the game’s best passer command more than $40 million per season.

Of course, this isn’t the 80’s and McCaffrey is much more than your average bellcow running back. He also happens to be perhaps the greatest pass-catching back in the history of the league, which makes him a special kind of weapon.

There’s a strong case to make that players like right tackle Taylor Moton and wide receiver Curtis Samuel should have been prioritized for extensions first. However, the Panthers are betting that they have a singular talent at a position that’s probably become too undervalued in recent years. Only time will tell if it’s the right call.
