Falcons hire former Texans senior VP of football administration Chris Olsen

The Atlanta Falcons have hired former Houston Texans senior VP of football administration Chris Olsen.

Other NFL teams are retooling from the Houston Texans’ house-cleaning since June of 2019.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Atlanta Falcons have hired former Texans senior vice president of football administration in their front office. Olsen will be the right-hand man to general manager Terry Fontenot.

Olsen was named interim general manager after the firing of general manager Brian Gaine on June 7, 2019. Though Olsen was the interim, he was merely a figurehead as coach Bill O’Brien had considerably more sway over the five-man general managing council that filled the void left behind after Gaine’s firing. Like Gaine, Olsen ultimately was out of the organization by January of 2020 when chairman and CEO Cal McNair named O’Brien general manager and promoted Jack Easterby to executive vice president of football operations.

The former Texans front office member was in charge of managing the Texans’ salary cap and contracts. Olsen had been a part of the Texans since 2007.

On Friday, the Atlanta Falcons named Chris Olsen the new senior director of football administration. Olsen previously served as the vice president of football operations for the Houston Texans, and worked within the organization for over 12 years.

After a brief stint as the Texans interim general manager when the team fired former GM Brian Gaine, Olsen was ultimately let in 2019.

Falcons GM Terry Fontenot commented on the hire, per the Falcons team site.

“Chris is widely respected across the entire league for his knowledge of the game and the business, and the work he has accomplished to this point in his career,” said Fontenot. “On top of that, he is a great human being and teammate and we are excited for him to join the Falcons organization. We look forward to what we can accomplish and build together.”

Olsen helped manage Houston’s salary cap and contract negotiations, which should be welcome news to a cash-strapped Falcons team.

Who is managing the Texans’ salary cap?

The Houston Texans are in their first free agency period without Chris Olsen since 2007. Who is managing their salary cap space now?

The Houston Texans are in their first free agency period without Chris Olsen managing the salary cap. Olsen was relieved of his duties as senior vice president of football administration on Jan. 19, a post he had held since 2007.

Who is managing the Texans’ salary cap now?

Meet Kevin Krajcovic, the football administration coordinator for the Texans, who got the title in 2019. The Ohio University alumnus assisted Olsen with negotiating player contracts and also the club’s salary cap.

Krajcovic isn’t exactly new to the operation as he spent the last seven seasons with the Texans as a football administration analyst. Prior to that, Krajcovic, who holds two master’s degrees in sports administration and business administration, was an intern with the Texans for two seasons.

The Texans have the fourth-highest salary cap space in the NFL at $46.2 million, according to Over The Cap. Krajcovic has learned well from Olsen. the Texans need Krajcovic to keep count of the cap dollars as they attempt to re-sign left tackle Laremy Tunsil to presumably the largest contract for an offensive lineman in the NFL and also negotiate an extension with Deshaun Watson.

Report: Texans fire interim general manager Chris Olsen

The Houston Texans have fired interim general manager and senior vice president of football administration Chris Olsen.

The Houston Texans have shaken up their front office in the aftermath of the 2019 season coming to a close.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans have fired senior vice president of football administration Chris Olsen, who was serving as the interim general manager since the club fired general manager Brian Gaine on June 7, 2019.

Olsen had been with the Texans since 2007 where he started out as a vice president of football administration. Olsen had been a key part of helping the Texans manage the salary cap and negotiate player contracts.

Prior to Olsen joining the Texans, he worked in the NFL league offices for 13 years, including as manager of labor relations on the NFL management council from 1999-2006, where he gain extensive experience working with player contracts as he had to make sure player contracts teams submitted were in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement and salary cap. Olsen was also the NFL’s liaison to the NFLPA as it related to player contracts.

Firing Olsen means more shakeup in the front office, and it could be more influence from the part of executive vice president of team development Jack Easterby, who helped evaluate the Texans from an organization standpoint during the 2019 offseason, even when the club’s nine-week workout program started in April.

Coach Bill O’Brien had influence over the five-man general managing council, even though Olsen was the interim general manager. Now with Olsen out of the way, O’Brien has even more sway that he did before.

The Texans have a bevy of offseason moves to be made, including whether to retain receiver Will Fuller, keep cornerback Bradley Roby, or start negotiations with quarterback Deshaun Watson on his well-deserved contract extension. Houston will have to negotiate some of these new contracts without the benefit of Olsen’s 12 years of experience.
