Colts sign CB Chris Lammons to 53-man roster with JuJu Brents on IR

With JuJu Brents being placed on IR, the Colts announced that they signed CB Chris Lammons to the 53-man roster.

With JuJu Brents being placed on injured reserve, the Indianapolis Colts announced that they signed cornerback Chris Lammons to the 53-man roster. Lammons was previously on the Colts’ practice squad.

Although Lammons didn’t make the Colts’ initial 53-man roster, he was elevated to the game day roster for Sunday’s Week 1 matchup with the Texans to provide special teams depth.

Lammons ended up playing 22 special teams snaps in that game across five different phases.

Lammons went undrafted in 2018 and has played 975 special teams snaps over his career, along with 239 on defense, primarily lining up in the slot. The 2023 season was his first with the Colts.

Unless the Colts plan to make a sudden change with Lammons, as a nickel cornerback, the team will likely look to either Dallis Flowers–who was a healthy scratch in the team’s Week 1 matchup–or Samuel Womack, who was claimed off waivers during roster cutdowns two weeks ago and has both slot and boundary experience.

The cornerback position was a big unknown for the Colts entering the 2024 season and those question marks have now only grown with Brents sidelined.

With Lammons on the active roster, the Colts now have a practice squad opening that needs to be filled. They very well could bring in another cornerback to join David Long, Jaylin Simpson, and Ameer Speed on the practice squad.

Update: it has been reported by Joel Erickson of the Indy Star that the Colts signed CB Kelvin Joseph to the practice squad.

Colts elevate 2 from practice squad ahead of game vs. Texans

The Colts announced that they’ve elevated two players from the practice squad ahead of their matchup with the Texans.

The Indianapolis Colts announced that they’re elevating cornerback Chris Lammons and kicker Spencer Shrader from the practice squad ahead of their matchup with the Houston Texans.

Each week, a team can elevate up to two players from the practice squad to the active game day roster. Each player can be elevated up to three times during the season. After that third time, they either have to be signed to the 53-man roster or released.

With only five cornerbacks on the 53-man roster, Lammons provides some added depth at a position with question marks. Defensively, Lammons is a backup option at the nickel, but most likely, his role will come on special teams where he has nearly 1,000 career snaps.

With Matt Gay listed as questionable, the elevation of Shrader–while not definitive quite yet–tells us that Gay probably isn’t kicking on Sunday.

Gay has been recovering from a hernia injury that he suffered in the team’s preseason finale against Cincinnati. This injury did require surgery. Gay did not formally practice this past week although Shane Steichen did mention that he has been doing some kicking.

Shrader was signed by the Colts following April’s draft after going undrafted out of Notre Dame. He appeared in the first and third preseason games, making all four extra point attempts and both field goals, including a 56-yarder against the Bengals.

Colts reportedly releasing veteran CB Chris Lammons

As part of their roster cutdowns, the Colts are reportedly releasing veteran cornerback Chris Lammons.

As part of the roster cuts taking place, the Colts are reportedly releasing veteran cornerback Chris Lammons, according to Joel Erickson of the Indy Star.

Erickson added that “Lammons could be back depending on options.”

Update: The Colts rostered only five cornerbacks–Kenny Moore, JuJu Brents, Jaylon Jones, Darrell Baker, and Dallis Flowers.

Lammons was competing with rookie Micah Abraham for the backup nickel cornerback role behind Kenny Moore.

Lammons, who has been in the NFL since 2018, played in all three preseason games, totaling 49 snaps. He made four tackles while missing two, according to PFF.

In coverage, he allowed three receptions on five targets but limited pass catchers to only 5.7 yards per catch. Lammons also had a fumble recovery and played 12 special teams snaps.

He spent most of the 2023 season on the Colts practice squad, filling in for Moore in Week 17 against Las Vegas when he was injured.

While the experience that Lammons has, appearing in 46 games over his career, oftentimes when it comes to these back end roster openings, teams prefer to go with the younger, higher upside players, which in this instance is Abraham.

Although Abraham would spent most of his college career on the boundary, he transitioned well to the slot this summer, showing a willingness as a tackler and those ball skills of his, forcing a fumble against Denver and then returning it for a touchdown. During his college career, Abraham had 12 interceptions and 43 passes defensed.

At this time, it hasn’t been confirmed that Abraham made the roster or not.

Colts’ CB Chris Lammons will begin training camp on PUP list

Colts’ cornerback Chris Lammons will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Here is what you need to know.

With Colts players reporting for training camp, the team has announced that they’ve placed cornerback Chris Lammons on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Those who end up on the PUP list sustained a football-related injury. These players still count towards the team’s 91-man roster and cannot participate in practice, although they are able to partake in all other team activities. Once a player is healthy, they can be activated off PUP and be back on the practice field.

Lammons did not participate during OTAs or minicamp and was seen by the media in a boot. When meeting with reporters, GM Chris Ballard said that Lammons did have ankle surgery, but his absence shouldn’t be too long with Ballard adding that he’s a week or two away from being ready.

Lammons spent most of the 2023 season on the Colts’ practice squad, but did start at slot cornerback in Week 17 when Kenny Moore was sidelined. In that game, Lammons allowed four completions on six targets for 41 yards with a pass breakup.

Over three games as a practice squad elevation to the gameday roster, Lammons played 58 special teams snaps as well.

While, understandably so, much of the focus at cornerback for the Colts is on the boundary position, the backup role behind Moore could be up for grabs, with Lammons and sixth-round draft pick Micah Abraham potentially competing for that roster spot.

In addition to Lammons going on the NFI list, the Colts also placed Raekwon Davis on the NFI list. For more on Lammons, click here.

The good news is that only Davis and Lammons have designations. When meeting with reporters, GM Chris Ballard mentioned that JuJu Brents had an ankle clean up following offseason programs, but that he should be cleared soon.

Genard Avery is “getting close.” Braden Smith will get worked back slowly, and Ashton Dulin is “good to go,” although he may be limited to start.

Colts’ training camp roster preview: CB Chris Lammons

Next up in our Colts’ training camp roster preview is CB Chris Lammons. Here is a look back at 2023 for Lammons and what’s ahead in 2024.

Veterans and rookies for the Indianapolis Colts will report for training camp on July 24th, with the first practice taking place on July 25th.

Between now and then I will be previewing the Colts’ 91-man roster with a look back at each player’s 2023 season, along with what’s ahead for 2024.

I’ll be going through the Colts’ roster alphabetically, so up next is cornerback Chris Lammons. To stay up to date with our other previews, be sure to head over to Colts Wire.

2023 Season Review

Lammons would spend most of the 2023 season on the Colts’ practice squad but was signed to the active roster in mid-December and appeared on defense in the team’s Week 17 matchup with Las Vegas.

In that game, Lammons was the Colts’ slot cornerback for that game with Kenny Moore inactive dealing with an injury. Lammons allowed four completions on six targets for 41 yards and one pass breakup, with a quarterback passer rating when targeted of just 86.1.

On special teams, Lammons appeared in three games over the course of the season. He was elevated to the active roster in Weeks 8 and 9 and was signed to the active roster for the team’s Week 16 matchup. Lammons played 58 snaps primarily across three different phases of the special teams unit and logged two tackles.

2024 Season Preview

Although the cornerback position for the Colts has its question marks, this is a somewhat crowded room with the additions of Jaylin Simpson and Micah Abraham in the draft.

What we know right now is that Moore will be in the slot, JuJu Brents will be starting at one of the boundary positions, while Jaylon Jones and Dallis Flowers will be competing for the playing time at the other.

Presumably, Simpson and Abraham may be the favorites to round out the cornerback room on the 53-man roster, given that they are recent draft picks. However, as we saw just last year with Darius Rush, that doesn’t necessarily make them a roster lock either.

The Colts have options when it comes to the boundary cornerback position, but the backup nickel role behind Moore may be up for grabs this summer. Abraham played on the boundary in college, but the Colts believe he can play inside. The team also signed undrafted rookie Clay Fields, who will presumably play from the slot as well.

Then there is Lammons, who is easily the most experienced of that trio, having played 239 defensive snaps since entering the NFL in 2018. When it comes to backup roles, that experience can either be viewed as valuable or the team could decide they’d rather roster the younger, higher upside player, like Abraham in this instance.

Lammons did not participate in the OTA or minicamp practices and was seen with a boot on his left ankle–although, according to The Athletic’s James Boyd, Lammons had only a brace on for the final day of practice. It’s unknown if what Lammons was dealing with will impact his availability for the start of training camp.

Colts’ Chris Lammons ruled out vs. Texans in Week 18

Colts CB Chris Lammons was ruled out for Week 18.

Indianapolis Colts CB Chris Lammons was downgraded from questionable to out ahead of the Week 18 matchup against the Houston Texans, the team announced Friday.

Lammons didn’t practice all week due to an ankle injury but was still given a questionable tag on the final injury report. He was downgraded Friday, meaning the Colts will have a bit less depth at the nickel position.

The Colts also listed cornerback Kenny Moore (back), right tackle Braden Smith (knee), running back Zack Moss (forearm), left guard Quenton Nelson (ankle) and center Ryan Kelly (ankle) as questionable, but none of their statuses changed.

With Lammons out, it’s likely that safety Nick Cross will take over as the backup nickel behind Moore if the latter plays Saturday night.

The Colts and Texans are set for kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Colts elevate CB Chris Lammons to active roster for Week 9

Chris Lammons gets the call-up in Week 9.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated cornerback Chris Lammons from the practice squad to the active roster for the Week 9 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, the team announced Saturday.

This move comes as no surprise considering the Colts will be without starter Julius Brents, who was ruled out due to a quad injury he suffered in Week 7 against the Cleveland Browns.

Lammons gets the call-up after Tony Brown struggled mightily against the New Orleans Saints.

With Lammons being called up, the Colts will start Kenny Moore II and rookie Jaylon Jones while defensive coordinator Gus Bradley will have to make a decision between Lammons, Brown and Darrell Baker Jr. for the nickel role.
