Corey Brewer to join Pelicans as player development coach, Chris Finch leaves to join Raptors
The New Orleans Pelicans gained some clarity on next season’s coaching staff with the hiring of Corey Brewer and the departure of Chris Finch.
The New Orleans Pelicans saw a couple of changes on their coaching staff on Saturday. On the hiring front, the team will bring in Corey Brewer as a player development coach, as reported by Mark Berman of Fox 26 KRIV in Houston.
Brewer did not play last season but was apart of the Sacramento Kings’ roster inside the bubble. He last played in the 2019-20 season for the Kings, featuring in five games at the end of the season.
Interestingly, Brewer does have a history with the baby Lakers on the Pelicans roster after playing half a season with them in 2017-18. Ingram and Brewer, particularly, have a close relationship as he described last year.
“…that was like my vet. [Brewer] talked to me about everything. Everything that went on behind the scenes, some of the stuff that you can’t say outside [of the locker room] and in front of everybody else. We called each other ‘The Thin Twins.’ We were both under 190 pounds. That’s my dude. He’s been really, really good to me.”
It’d be pretty easy to spin this as another reason Ingram might stay, but all indications are that Ingram will be staying in New Orleans with his restricted free agency to be short-lived this off-season.
On the flip side, the Pelicans appear to have lost an assistant coach and an important one at that in Chris Finch. Interviewed for the head coaching job in Indiana, Finch eventually was passed over for the position. With a new regime led by Stan Van Gundy coming in this season, Finch opted to move on from New Orleans and will join Nick Nurse in Toronto, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Ironically, Finch is likely filling the role vacated by Nate Bjorkgren who was the candidate the Pacers chose to hire as head coach.

Report: New Orleans Pelicans hire Stan Van Gundy as new head coach
The New Orleans Pelicans finally filled their head coach vacancy on Wednesday by hiring former Heat, Magic and Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy.
After a lengthy, lengthy search process, the New Orleans Pelicans have found their new head coach. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Andrew Lopez reported that the franchise had agreed to a deal with Stan Van Gundy. Per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the deal with Van Gundy is a four-year contract.
According to Wojnarowski, the Pelicans were “sold on (his) abilities as a teacher with a young roster, his history of building top defensive teams and his vision for the roster in place.” Wojnarowski also noted that Van Gundy’s personnel decisions as the head coach and general manager in Detroit did not factor into the search.
Last week, Van Gundy interviewed with the Pelicans and was listed as one of the four finalists for the position. One of the first tasks for Van Gundy may be attempting to retain Chris Finch, an assistant for New Orleans last season that has fielded interest across the league for head coach openings.

Report: Jason Kidd ‘not part of’ New Orleans Pelicans head coach search
The New Orleans Pelicans’ search for a head coach has continued this week, but it does not include Jason Kidd, contradicting a previous report.
The New Orleans Pelicans’ search for a head coach has gained steam in the last week and has seen multiple names rumored to be included. While Adrian Wojnarowski reported the likes of Ty Lue and Stan Van Gundy received during the week, another report indicated Jason Kidd was a potential other name included as a finalist.
On Thursday morning, The Athletic’s Sham Charania added clarity to that last name, stating that Kidd is not included as a finalist.
“Sources added Lakers assistant Jason Kidd is not part of the Pelicans’ process right now.”
The term finalist was one used first by Wojnarowski and then by Charania on Thursday. Both Lue and Van Gundy are considered finalists for the position while two other unnamed finalists will interview for the position this week, per Charania.
Chris Finch is another name that has been mentioned in trade rumors around the Pelicans, though not directly with the team. An assistant coach under Alvin Gentry, Finch is considered one of the frontrunners for the Pacers’ opening for head coach.
