Tennessee receiver coach Kelsey Pope details Chris Brazzell being a ‘gamer’

Tennessee wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope discusses Chris Brazzell II being a gamer.

Tennessee wide receiver Chris Brazzell II made his debut for the Vols in Week 1 against Chattanooga.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound redshirt sophomore transfer from Tulane recorded five receptions for 59 yards in the Vols’ 69-3 win.

Tennessee wide receiver assistant coach Kelsey Pope met with media following practice on Tuesday. He discussed the transfer wide receiver’s character.

“He’s a gamer,” Pope said of Brazzell II. “He is one of the most competitive guys on the team. Right before kickoff, he’s screaming on the sideline. I was worried that something was wrong. That’s his demeanor. He’s in it, he’s engulfed. He immerses himself in this game.

“I think Chris is one of those guys who is all or nothing. He’s going to do something 100 percent of the time at full speed. That’s why you see him out there so much. He loves the game, which gives him a shot to be really successful and good at this game.”

Tennessee will next play North Carolina State on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina (7:30 p.m. EDT, ABC).

Chris Brazzell II tests Vols’ defensive backs ‘every day’ in fall camp

Tennessee wide receiver Chris Brazzell II is testing the Vols’ defensive backs every day in fall training camp.

Tennessee’s football season is approaching. The Vols have 17 days until holding its first game of the season on Aug. 31 versus Chattanooga at Neyland Stadium (12:45 p.m. EDT, SEC Network).

Tulane transfer and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Chris Brazzell II is taking part in his first fall training camp with the Vols.

Tennessee secondary coach Willie Martinez discussed how Brazzell II tests his defensive backs in practice.

“Every day, his speed and his competitiveness,” Martinez said. “Brazzell is very competitive and plays with a lot of fire and energy. We better do that on our side of the ball. You have to have great energy and stuff like that. He’s very competitive and a high-level player, so that’s only going to make us better.

“We have a great group of wide receivers that, again, are going to be playing on Sunday, so it’s easy for my job to tell the kids, ‘hey man, you want a great resume? Put it on video. Put it on video against these guys that are going to be playing on Sunday.’ Brazzell is one of those guys. He’s a highly competitive and physical player. He’s not very quiet, which is kind of cool. That’s kind of like, we like it, but he’s making us better.”

Josh Heupel ‘looking forward’ to having a great training camp with Chris Brazzell

2024 SEC media days: Josh Heupel is looking forward to having a great training camp with Chris Brazzell

Southeastern Conference football media days kicked off on Monday at Omni Dallas Hotel in Dallas, Texas.

Fourth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel met with media on Tuesday in Dallas.

Heupel was asked about Tulane transfer wide receiver Chris Brazzell II ahead of the 2024 season.

“It’s always a luxury as a quarterback to have guys that have the ability to separate, create bigger windows, to have length, to go up and attack the football, have the skill set to defeat press at the line of scrimmage, let you get the ball out of your hands, not sit back there and take a bunch of hits,” Heupel said. “Chris is somebody that’s got a lot of talk about because of what he’s done on the field. Been a great teammate, but he’s been a dynamic playmaker up until this point as we went through spring ball, and his best is still coming.

“He’s continued to grow and mature physically. Just his strength, explosiveness, size to his frame, what he’s done since he got there in January, really excited about him and looking forward to having a great training camp with him.”

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Brazzell appeared in 15 games at Tulane from 2022-23. He recorded 45 receptions, 722 receiving yards and five touchdowns for the Green Wave.
