Like many of you out there on the internet, I mourned the loss of the Choco Taco when it was announced that the incredible frozen treat was getting discontinued after nearly 40 years by its maker, Klondike.

But it also ignited a debate with some friends that I decided to bring here: Where did it rank among the ice cream novelties — that’s what they were called at one camp I attended, which I’ve stuck to since — that you can get from an ice cream truck?

Let’s break them down, and we’re obviously not counting actual soft-serve ice cream here. That’s for another day:

Today, the world lost a hero. That’s right, after nearly 40 years, the Choco Taco is no more after Klondike confirmed the beloved ice cream staple has been discontinued.

The internet was treated to the devastating news on Monday afternoon after reports circulated online that the popular summertime snack was no more. In speaking with People, a Klondike representative confirmed the discontinuation of the Choco Taco in July due to “an unprecedented spike in demand for different Klondike products over the past two years.”

For many, the waffle cone taco filled with vanilla ice cream, fudge and peanuts topped off with a chocolate coating was a cherished dessert of their youth and will be sorely missed.

The passing of such a beloved dessert hit the internet hard, as more and more of the things that brought us joy in our childhoods disappears into the ether and is lost to time forever.
