“Lions will usually do this when they are on their three-day mating binges to let anything and anyone know that the female is theirs and they better not even think of getting in the way or there will be consequences,” LionHub101 wrote on its Instagram post of @movingpicturesafrica’s video.

WildestAfrica wrote that it is usual for male lions in this state to be moody and temperamental, and described the footage as a “heart-pounding moment.”

“This did turn out for an opportunity to get an epic shot, @movingpicturesafrica behind the lens capturing it all, so focused on the job he was unaware of how close Mad Eye actually was,” WildestAfrica wrote.

Mother elephant becomes frantic trying to save its twins from lions

A mother elephant led its twins to a watering hole in Chobe National Park in Botswana unaware about the danger lurking nearby.

A tour guide in the park located in Botswana captured video of the very rare sighting of elephant twins and the subsequent encounter with a pride of lions, who made it difficult for the elephant mother to protect its young ones.

Desmond Clack told LatestSightings.com that the mother was desperate for water following the dry season and had no choice but to use the isolated watering hole.

“Suddenly, she realized the presence of the lions,” Clack said. “The pride, having just fed, surprisingly turned their attention to the new arrivals.

“The mother elephant, realizing the danger, tried to fend off the lions. The lions retreated but soon regrouped, and this time they encircled the mother and calves. In a bold move to fend them off, she charged at them, hoping to scare them away. This left her calves momentarily unguarded. It was during this critical moment that the lions seized the opportunity to attack. In the chaos, one of the calves tripped, and a male lion saw its chance. He pounced and grabbed it!”

“In a frantic bid to save her offspring, she was torn between protecting the second calf or rescuing the first calf,” Clack told LatestSightings.com. “She rushed at the lions that had grabbed the first calf, leaving the second exposed. The lions took this moment to go at the second calf. Luckily for it, the mother returned in time to save it. However, the first calf was not so lucky.”

At that point, Clack stopped filming because it was too sad.

“It’s the harsh reality of the circle of life,” he said. “To witness an elephant with twins was a first for me, and the unfolding events were both awe-inspiring and heart-wrenching. In the wild, every day is a fight for survival, and this sighting was a testament to the incredible strength and resilience of these majestic creatures.”
