Raiders close in on hiring new offensive coordinator, and it’s not Chip Kelly

Chip Kelly won’t go to the Raiders.

The Las Vegas Raiders had seemingly settled on Kliff Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator. Then he backed out and changed his mind. The door had remained open for Chip Kelly to leave UCLA and go back to the NFL, but that door now appears to be closed once again.

Via Raiders Wire, the Las Vegas NFL franchise has targeted former Chicago Bear offensive coordinator Luke Getsy as its new offensive coordinator:

“Getsy is among just three candidates who had interviewed for the job with the Raiders along with UCLA head coach Chip Kelly and Steelers QB coach Mike Sullivan.

“While Getsy was just recently fired by the Bears, he is the only of the three interviewed candidates who has recent offensive coordinator experience.

“One of the interesting dynamics here is what this could mean for the possibility of the Raiders going after Justin Fields. Getsy was fired because he couldn’t make an offense led by Fields work at a high level. If the Raiders believe Getsy is worth hiring as their OC, it would seem they think the issue was Fields, not Getsy.”

Kliff Kingsbury, in line to become Raiders’ offensive coordinator, changes his mind

It’s not the first time Kliff Kingsbury has changed his mind. USC fans know this.

Kliff Kingsbury will not be the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator after all. Reports had emerged earlier this week that everything was just about set between the two parties. Saturday, however, Kingsbury basically opted out, as Raiders Wire has noted. It’s a notable change of mind for a man who has changed his mind before.

We all remember, in 2018, that Kingsbury had agreed to become USC offensive coordinator under Clay Helton. However, he never coached a down for the Trojans six years ago. He took the open head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals.

Does this late switch mean that Kingsbury is about to agree to become the offensive coordinator for another NFL team, or that he might wait for a college job? Keep in mind that UCLA head coach Chip Kelly is not happy with his situation in Westwood. He might want an NFL escape hatch. Kingsbury going to the Raiders had seemingly closed the door for Kelly, who had interviewed with the Raiders multiple times. Maybe now Kelly can get the Raider job and create an open spot at UCLA as the Bruins head for the Big Ten.

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly tied to NFL offensive coordinator opening

UCLA Bruins head coach Chip Kelly is a candidate for an NFL offensive coordiantor opening.

The coaching carousel this offseason continues to appear to be never-ending.

Just a day after Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley left Chesnut Hill for the defensive coordinator spot with the Green Bay Packers, reports have surfaced that UCLA Bruins head football coach Chip Kelly is also eyeing coordinator jobs in the NFL.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Kelly is considered a potential candidate for the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator opening under new head coach Dan Quinn.

Additionally, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday night that Kelly also interviewed twice for the Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator job this offseason. The Raiders and head coach Antonio Pierce ultimately chose to hire USC assistant and former Texas Tech and Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Notably, Kelly spent the 2013 through 2016 seasons as a head coach in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles (2013-15) and San Francisco 49ers (2016).

Kliff Kingsbury’s move to the Raiders might have affected UCLA football’s future

The Raiders interviewed Chip Kelly multiple times for their OC position, but Kliff Kingsbury won the job instead.

The football offseason contained a lot of coaching carousel questions and plot points. One notable drama revolved around Kliff Kingsbury, who was on Lincoln Riley’s 2023 coaching staff at USC and was expected to land an NFL coordinator job or a college job either as head coach or offensive coordinator. That drama came to an end on Thursday when it was reported that the Las Vegas Raiders had settled on Kingsbury as their choice for offensive coordinator. Raiders Wire has more details.

There had been speculation that the Chicago Bears might be interested in Kingsbury for their offensive coordinator spot, but the Bears chose Seattle Seahawk offensive coordinator Shane Waldron instead. The door was closed to the possibility that Kingsbury would call plays for Caleb Williams in Chicago.

Kingsbury’s move did not affect Caleb Williams, then. Kingsbury’s move to the Raiders might have affected someone else’s future, and by extension, the future of USC’s chief football rival, the UCLA Bruins.

Kingsbury, by getting the Raiders’ offensive coordinator job, prevented Chip Kelly from getting the same job. Raiders Wire picked up reports noting that the Las Vegas franchise interviewed Kelly multiple times for the offensive coordinator vacancy on new coach Antonio Pierce’s staff.

Kingsbury might have prevented Chip Kelly from leaving UCLA, something Bruin fans desperately want to see. Kingsbury might have therefore caused Chip Kelly and UCLA fans to be stuck with each other for another year, though Kelly might still try to land another NFL coordinator job.

Life works in mysterious ways.

Raiders interviewed UCLA HC Chip Kelly multiple times for OC job

Raiders interviewed UCLA HC Chip Kelly multiple times for OC job

The Raiders have got their guy for the ever-important offensive coordinator position. On Thursday night, they agreed to a deal (not official) with former Arizona Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury to be their new offensive coordinator.

There were several names mentioned for the job, including Alex Van Pelt and Mark Sullivan. But one name that wasn’t mentioned on social media was Chip Kelly.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Raiders interviewed Kelly multiple times for their offensive coordinator role. Kelly has been looking to get back into the NFL after a short stint as the head coach of the Eagles and the 49ers,

The Raiders decided to go in a different direction, but it is interesting that Antonio Pierce and the front office did have some interest here. It appears that Kelly could land in Washington with the Commanders, but he was close to taking the job in Las Vegas.

Kingsbury was the offensive coordinator at USC last season and he has a much different offensive philosophy than Kelly. It’ll be fascinating to see how he does in the NFL the second time around.

Report: UCLA coach Chip Kelly a contender to be Commanders OC

Could Chip Kelly return to the NFL with the Commanders?

Could Chip Kelly be on his way back to the NFL?

According to multiple reports, Kelly interviewed with the Las Vegas Raiders to become their offensive coordinator. Las Vegas eventually chose former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN is reporting that Commanders head coach Dan Quinn could be interested in speaking with Kelly about Washington’s offensive coordinator position.

Then there is this from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports:

So, according to Jones, one of the teams that interviewed Quinn mentioned Kelly as a possible candidate for OC if he landed the head coaching position. Kelly rose to prominence at Oregon, coaching the Ducks to the BCS national championship game in the 2010 season. He was the Eagles’ head coach from 2013-2015 and the 49ers’ head coach for one season (2016). He’s been at UCLA since 2018 and reportedly wants to return to the NFL.

Kelly was a fascinating hire by Philadelphia in 2013. While it began well, with the Eagles going 10-6 in each of his first two seasons, things soured badly in 2015, and he was fired with one game remaining in the season.

The 49ers hired him in 2016, but San Francisco had a terrible roster, and he was fired after one 2-14 season.

Kelly is an innovative offensive coach whom other NFL coaches studied for years. He struggled at UCLA in his first three seasons but has turned the program around in recent years.

Former Eagles and current UCLA coach Chip Kelly could be candidate for Commanders OC job

Former Eagles and current UCLA head coach Chip Kelly could be candidate for Commanders offensive coordinator job

Chip Kelly could be heading back to the NFC East, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the UCLA head coach could be a candidate for the Commanders’ vacant offensive coordinator job.

Washington made their first hire under new owner Josh Harris, hiring Dan Quinn away from the Dallas Cowboys.

Washington hired Adam Peters as general manager on Jan. 12. The moves represent the first onfield steps to moving on from Dan Snyder and his toxic regime.

Quinn served as Dallas’ defensive coordinator for the past three seasons, and during that stint, the Cowboys ranked a combined fifth in points and seventh in yards. Under Quinn, the Cowboys led the NFL with 93 forced turnovers.

The Commanders finished 4-13 in 2023 but will enter the offseason with momentum as they own the No. 2 pick in the 2024 draft and five picks in the top 100.

According to Over The Cap, they also have approximately $70 million in available cap space.

Chip Kelly as Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator? Rumors persist

Chip Kelly to the Raiders? It’s a discussion point. How serious is anyone’s guess.

The location of Chip Kelly’s work office in 2024 is still in question. NFL rumors aren’t going away for the UCLA head coach. Would he tire of recruiting to the point that he would take an NFL offensive coordinator job? That question has not been definitively answered, because his name is popping up in connection to the Las Vegas Raiders’ open slot for offensive coordinator.

From our friends at UCLA Wire, we are hearing that this story isn’t dying down:

“UCLA Bruins head coach Chip Kelly is back for one more year as they head to the Big Ten Conference. However, rumblings have swirled about Kelly potentially going back to the NFL — this time as an offensive coordinator.

“While nothing has materialized yet, there have been some rumors swirling around at the Senior Bowl, and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that Kelly could be eyeing the Raiders OC job.”

It would be quite a story if Kelly left this late in the coaching cycle. Where would UCLA turn if Kelly did bolt for the NFL in February? A new coach would need to deal with transfer portal departures and try to develop a plan to gather new players in the spring portal window, which begins on April 16.

Chip Kelly could be part of package deal with Dan Quinn for Seahawks

If Quinn does come to Seattle he may not be coming alone.

NFL teams are usually in a panic to fill any head coach vacancy, often filling open positions within just days of firing their last locker room leader. This year things are going differently, though. So far only two of the eight teams that had head coach openings at the end of the season have filled those jobs – with the Raiders and Patriots both promoting internally.

The rest of the field has been slow and deliberate in making these calls and it makes sesne given the abnormally high number of quality candidates in this coaching cycle. Seattle is currently going through a second round of interviews with five coordinators, including Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who appears to be the favorite.

If Quinn does come to Seattle he may not be coming alone. According to a report by Shane Hoffman at the Oregonian, Chip Kelly could be part of a package deal with Quinn. Hoffman followed up saying that Kelly would serve as offensive coordinator.

Like Quinn, Kelly has plenty of experience as he was head coach of the Eagles from 2013-2015 after a successful four-year run with the Ducks. Recently he’s been part of a turnaround at UCLA, going 3-9 in his first year and improving steadily, posting at least eight wins in three straight seasons.

Anything can happen in the NFL, but we’d be surprised by this one.

Chip Kelly draws interest from NFL teams as potential offensive coordinator

UCLA fans would love this.

Is this real? CBS Sports is saying it is: Chip Kelly really is being considered by some NFL teams, according to the latest whispers from the coaching carousel.

Here’s the link and a piece of intel from the CBS report:

“Multiple sources tell CBS Sports that UCLA head coach Chip Kelly has been mentioned as a possible offensive coordinator by multiple head-coaching candidates this cycle, and multiple teams have started due diligence on the former Eagles and 49ers head coach for their potential offensive coordinator vacancy.

“Kelly, 60, has been at UCLA since 2018 with a 35-34 record, including a 25-13 mark in the past three seasons. Kelly ushered in an offensive revolution in the NFL in the 2010s with his hurry-up offense and RPO-laden schemes.”

It would be a godsend for UCLA and UCLA fans if Kelly went to the NFL. The Bruins could start fresh heading into the Big Ten and would have a new leader for their program. Kelly is just not that into recruiting and some of the other demands of modern coaching. He had a machine at Oregon over a decade ago in which the Ducks’ resources and brand name helped him out. He is no longer ahead of the curve the way he was in Eugene. We will see what happens.
