Lakers to hold Chick Hearn Night on Monday vs. Pacers

On Monday, the Lakers will honor the memory of arguably the greatest play-by-play announcer in basketball history.

On Monday evening, the Los Angeles Lakers will host the Indiana Pacers, but that will not be the only thing of note taking place at Crypto.com Arena.

The team will also hold Chick Hearn Night in memory of its late legendary play-by-play announcer.

Hearn first got behind the microphone for a Lakers playoff game in 1961, and he quickly became a fixture of the team and its fan base. He continued to call games for L.A. until his death in 2002, and his colorful, staccato delivery and numerous catchphrases became the stuff of legend.

Hearn called an incredible 3,338 consecutive games, a streak that spanned his five decades behind the microphone for the team.

The Lakers will use this tribute to Hearn as an opportunity to award two students at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism with scholarships. In addition, every fan in attendance will receive a nifty key chain.

Lakers fans who grew up listening to Hearn will never forget his unmistakable voice and personality, as well as the memorable moments in team history he called.

Jeanie Buss: It’s a priority to the Laker brand that he retire a Laker. We’ll probably enjoy watching him as he approaches becoming the all-time leading scorer in history. And Episode 4 … shows the celebration that we had when Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar) became the all-time leading scorer, and (late Lakers broadcaster) Chick Hearn even says, ‘A record that we’ll never see broken.’ And I honestly believed that that was going to be the case, that nobody would ever touch Kareem’s record.

More on this storyline

Despite being one of the league’s elder statesman, there doesn’t appear to be any slowing down for LeBron James anytime soon.  LeBron has repeatedly voiced his desire to play with his older son, Bronny, but now James is voicing his desire to play alongside younger son Bryce as well. “I like to throw things out in the airwaves, but I’m not one to [say] what’s going to happen in the next two to three years,” LeBron told Sports Illustrated. “I am a visionary, but I’m also a guy that lives in the moment. I’d definitely be looking at who got first-round picks in 2024, 2025, things of that nature; 2026, ’27. I pay attention to that type of stuff.” -via Sports Illustrated / August 30, 2022
When asked specifically if he could see himself playing not just with Bronny, but also with Bryce, James made it clear that it’s something he’s thought about—depending on how his body and mind feel. “I feel like I could play for quite a while. So it’s all up to the body, but more importantly, my mind,” LeBron told SI. “If my mind can stay sharp and fresh and motivated, then the sky’s not even the limit for me. I can go beyond that. But we shall see.” -via Sports Illustrated / August 30, 2022
LeBron James and his wife Savannah confirmed to Sports Illustrated that their son Bronny is leaning toward playing college basketball rather than opting for the NBA G-League, Overtime Elite, an overseas league or other professional options in 2023–24. “Bronny wants to have a college career,” Savannah James said. “I think it would be really cool for him to start with collegiate basketball, just to start his legacy there.”  LeBron agreed that he believes his son “wants to go the college route.” -via Sports Illustrated / August 30, 2022

“We call heads,” said Thorn. A pause. “OK, gentlemen, here we go,” boomed the deep voice of O’Brien. “The coin’s in the air.” Another pause. Another pause. Another pause. “Tails it is!” O’Brien said. Hearn let out a triumphant whoop. “I was playing basketball at Venice Beach,” said Pat O’Brien, at the time a reporter for KNXT-TV in Los Angeles. “The news came over a transistor radio, and people started screaming. ‘Yes! Yes! We’re getting Magic! We’re getting Magic!’ ”

“There was no put on with him.” Stu …

“There was no put on with him.” Stu Lantz, the Spectrum SportsNet color commentator said of his 15-year broadcast partner. “When you’re genuine, people see it. You can’t hide genuine. You can fake it all you want, but you can’t hide it. He would just make you feel so at home, plus he was in everybody’s living room, you know? With 82 games, he’s in your living room 82 times a year. You just fell in love with the guy.” Now, Chick’s no longer here, he sits above the western sideline at the highest point, but somehow, he’s still here. Really, even Stu says, “Every time I step into the arena, I think of him.”

Robert Horry remembers this time as a …

Robert Horry remembers this time as a player with Chick by his side, “A lot of times when I was there, he wasn’t feeling good but he worked through it. He had to have his wife, Marge, come on the road with him. And think about it, most people would say ‘Nah, I’m just going to do home games.’ No, not Chick. He said ‘I love this game; I’m going to keep going.’ He started bringing his wife with him and he started battling all the illnesses. He kept going.”
