Bears QB Tyson Bagent nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Week

Fans can vote for Tyson Bagent to win the Week 7 Rookie of the Week award.

The good vibes keep coming for Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent. The Bears defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 30-12 in Bagent’s first NFL start as he filled in for Justin Fields, who is dealing with an injured thumb on his throwing hand. Bagent went 21-of-29 for 162 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers to keep the offense moving in front of dozens of friends and family. He’s the first Bears rookie quarterback to win his debut start since Craig Krenzel back in 2004.

His efforts were rewarded after the win with a game ball and now with the chance to win Pepsi® Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week. Bagent is one of six players to be nominated for the Week 7 award, along with Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, New York Giants cornerback Deonte Banks, and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison.

Bagent is the second Bears player to be nominated for the award this year, joining rookie cornerback Terell Smith after his contributions in Week 5 against the Washington Commanders. Fans can vote for Bagent by visiting nfl.com/voting/rookies/.

Jaylon Johnson says his team is working on a possible contract extension with the Bears

Johnson told 670 The Score that his team is working on a possible contract extension with the Bears, but admits it’s a process.

Chicago Bears Jaylon Johnson had himself a career day on Sunday. Could it be a precursor to a multiyear contract extension with the team?

Johnson is coming off a two-interception performance in the team’s 30-12 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, the first of which was returned for a touchdown, where he promptly did a money celebration in the end zone. That was a clear sign of his desire to get paid, and during his weekly appearance on 670 The Score’s Parkins & Spiegel show on Monday, he let it be known he and the Bears are talking about a possible deal.

“It’s a process, but things are, I would say, starting to hopefully ramp up,” Johnson told the hosts. “We’ll see kind of where things go, especially in this next week and a half before this trade deadline.” When host Danny Parkins asked Johnson directly if his representatives were in contract negotiations with the Bears, the cornerback said yes.

Johnson was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft and is arguably the team’s most coveted impending free agent. He’s one of the better cover corners in the league, but was knocked for not creating enough turnovers throughout his career. Those criticisms were answered on Sunday, and while it likely didn’t spur any contract negotiations, it was a reminder of Johnson’s abilities and why he deserves to remain with the Bears for the foreseeable future.

There’s a chance the Bears decide to part ways with Johnson at the trade deadline, but by most accounts, it seems general manager Ryan Poles is wanting to hold onto the 24-year-old defensive back. Johnson did mention the franchise tag as a possibility this spring in his interview as well, but perhaps a contract extension happens sooner rather than later.

WATCH: Bears QB Tyson Bagent throws 1st career TD pass vs. Raiders

The Bears rookie capped off an impressive drive with the first passing touchdown of his career.

Tyson Bagent led the Chicago Bears on two scoring drives in the first half against the Las Vegas Raiders with running touchdowns. Now it was time to lead another by throwing for a score. Bagent threw his first career touchdown pass in the third quarter against the Raiders to put the Bears up 21-3.

Bagent found running back D’Onta Foreman for his third score of the day to culminate a 15-play, 88-yard drive to extend the Bears’ lead. After getting into the red zone, Bagent found Foreman on the outside, who took the ball across the goal line for the score.

Through three quarters, Bagent completed 20-of-27 passes for 149 yards and the touchdown.

Bears activate C Doug Kramer off IR, elevate CB Joejuan Williams to the roster

For the first time since he was drafted, Doug Kramer has a chance to suit up in a regular-season game for his hometown team.

Chicago Bears center Doug Kramer Jr. will finally be ready to play in a regular-season game for his hometown team. On Saturday, the Bears announced they had activated Kramer off injured reserve, where he spent the first six weeks of the season dealing with a thumb injury. The Bears also elevated cornerback Joejuan Williams to the active roster for their game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kramer suffered a thumb injury in the team’s final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. He was designated to return to practice nearly two weeks ago but had yet to be activated on the roster until Saturday. Now that he’s back in the fold, the Bears have a plethora of centers on their roster, including Cody Whitehair, Lucas Patrick, Dan Feeney, and now Kramer.

The Bears are expected to adjust their starting offensive line for their game against the Raiders, and while it’s unlikely Kramer will become the starting center anytime soon, he’s now an added piece for them to consider if issues at the position persist. Kramer, a native of Hinsdale, IL, was a sixth-round draft pick in 2022 out of Illinois and missed his entire rookie season with a foot injury.

Williams, meanwhile, has played in one game for the Bears since he was signed back in September. With a few members of the secondary either out or questionable, Williams provides depth if they need it.

Report: Bears QB Justin Fields won’t need surgery on injured thumb

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has good news for the Bears quarterback.

Updates have been hard to come by when it comes to Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and his dislocated thumb, but there was some good news that came out on Thursday evening.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Fields will not need surgery on his thumb, which likely shortens his recovery time. “No surgery is coming,” Rapoport said. “The key to when he can get back on the field is when he is able to grip the football.”

Fields dislocated his thumb during the Bears’ 19-13 loss against the Minnesota Vikings when he went down awkwardly on a hit outside of the pocket. Head coach Matt Eberflus didn’t have many updates on the quarterback’s status this week and wouldn’t rule anything out. But now that surgery is off the table, the prognosis looks better than it did earlier in the week. There is still no timetable for Fields’ return, however, and the third-year signal caller could still be out for a few weeks. Fields has 1,201 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and 6 interceptions on the year.

With Fields all but ruled out, undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent takes over at quarterback and will make his first career NFL start against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Kyle Long nearly quit Bears at halftime vs. Raiders following blowup with Matt Nagy in 2019

Kyle Long shares new details about his Bears exit in 2019 after their game against the Raiders that included a verbal spat with Matt Nagy.

It’s been about three and a half years since Kyle Long last played for the Chicago Bears but he’s sharing interesting details about his departure from the team and it wasn’t pretty.

The former offensive lineman spent seven years with the Bears before he was unceremoniously placed on injured reserve following a Week 5 loss to the Las Vegas/Oakland Raiders during the 2019 season and never played a down for the navy and orange again.

Long hinted at what had gone down near the end of the year in some tweets and later revealed the Bears placed him on injured reserve due to his ineffectiveness on the field thanks to wear and tear on his body after so many years.

The decision wasn’t exactly Long’s choice, but he understood the nature of the business after struggling in that game against the Raiders. Now years later, Long shared exactly what went down that led to his departure and it’s a lot uglier than initially thought.

Speaking during a live broadcast on the Green Light Podcast, hosted by his brother Chris, Long revealed he nearly quit the team at halftime of that game after head coach Matt Nagy chewed him and his teammates out.

We were playing the Raiders and we were getting our asses whooped and we were in [the locker room] at halftime. Our head coach Matt Nagy, God bless him, he looks at the o-line and says ‘you guys are playing like some gutless, quiet [expletive]’ and he’s staring me in the eyeballs.

I stood up in the middle of the halftime and I just walked out. I made it about 50 yards down the hallway, and you know how long those hallways are, and our security guard goes ‘Kyle, come on man. Not like this.’ I had to ride eight hours home in first class on the way home. Because I’m a starter, they got me up with the coach. I sat across the aisle from Matt Nagy and his wife for eight hours the whole way.

They told me ‘do not come back to the building.’

Nagy’s message may not have been appreciated, but the team did show more fight in the second half of that game after being chewed out. Down 17-0 at halftime, Chicago scored 21 points in the third quarter, but fell at the end of the game, losing 24-21. Since leaving the Bears, Long has taken shots at Nagy on multiple occasions. It became clear he wasn’t a fan of the former Bears head coach, but this revelation took that notion to a new level.

Long retired following the 2019 season for one year and came back in 2021 to play with the Kansas City Chiefs, then hung up his cleats for good in 2022. Even though it’s been years since he and Nagy have shared a locker room, he still has strong feelings about how he was let go from the Bears.
