Steve Hogan, the Chief Executive Offer for Florida Citrus Sports, was made available to reporters Monday, ahead of the Cheez-It Bowl at Camping World Stadium.

Hogan was asked about how the recent surges in COVID-19 cases may affect his two bowl games — the Cheez-It Bowl and Citrus Bowl.

Obviously, the Cheez-It Bowl will play host to No. 19 Clemson and Iowa State on Wednesday, Dec. 29. While the Citrus Bowl will play host to No. 17 Iowa and No. 25 Kentucky on Saturday, Jan. 1.

“I’m not concerned right now,” he said. “All of our programs are in great shape. Vaccination rates are up there so far. Every day, the reports we got, we’re in great shape. So, I’m not really concerned. I think all four of our teams are in great shape to play both of our bowl games. We’ve taken a lot of precautions to protect them in close-contact, indoor environments. They’ve also done their own job back home in terms of how they protected their staff and their players.”

With an increase in cases and the lack of available scholarship players, the ACC has seen four teams — Wake Forest, Virginia, Boston College and Miami — all have their Bowl Games canceled.

“I feel for the communities that are experiencing teams that have had to withdraw. I feel for the teams were withdrawing,” Hogan said. “And I feel for the teams that are left there without an opponent to play, right? It’s a special opportunity, you want these kids to have it, but this coronavirus is gonna be with us now and I think we have to find steps to protect ourselves and find ways to manage it safely and we’re blessed enough in Orlando so far that we’re seeing that positive trend.”

Uiagalelei backs his new OC: ‘I know Coach Streeter is going to do an amazing job’

ORLANDO — During Clemson’s Cheez-It Bowl player-coordinator press conference on Sunday morning, D.J. Uiagalelei had his first opportunity to publicly address the news that Brandon Streeter will be the team’s offensive coordinator going forward.

Streeter, who will continue his quarterback coaching duties, recruited Uiagalelei to Clemson and has served as his position coach for the past two seasons.

“First and foremost, I’m excited,” Uiagalelei said Sunday. “Coach Streeter is my quarterback coach, so I’m real familiar. Have a great relationship with him already. So I’m really excited that Coach Streeter is the new offensive coordinator. Excited to get going with him in this game. I know Coach Streeter is going to do an amazing job.

For the most part, it’s been exactly the same. Coach Streeter is the exact same person as he was when he recruited me and to when he was my quarterback coach, when he was the passing game coordinator, and now as offensive coordinator, he’s the exact same person. Nothing has changed. I’m just excited for the new opportunity to work with Coach Streeter.”

This season, Uiagalelei talked about his faith in Tony Elliott amidst some offensive struggles. He reaffirmed his belief that Clemson’s former offensive coordinator was the best play-caller in the country, even when his unit seemingly hit a wall for the first couple of months of the season.

Uiagalelei was asked what it is about Streeter that gives him that same feeling of confidence that he had in Elliott.

“I think the main thing is the comfortability level I have with Coach Streeter,” he said. “Being my quarterback coach, I’m with him every day and I am in meetings with him every day and I know his thought process, and he knows my thought process of the different plays we want to call.

“So I think from a comfortability level, that’s the biggest thing with me, is I have a great relationship with him. And, so I think the comfortability level is right there. So I feel like that’s the biggest thing that I feel like I’m more comfortable with.”

ORLANDO — Mike Reed had his first chance to speak with reporters, since receiving a new title and promotion.

Clemson’s cornerbacks’ coach and newly minted special teams coordinator was made available during the team’s Cheez-It Bowl player-coordinator press conference on Sunday morning.

Reed was asked if he had any external opportunities come up this offseason and why he ultimately chose to stay at Clemson.

“Not really,” Reed explained. “You have opportunities every year. I’ve been in the game for a long time. I have a lot of friends that are in a lot of places. When you are at a place like Clemson, it’s kind of hard to leave. We do things a lot different than a lot of people. A lot of people base their program solely on winning and not developing and that’s one good thing I love about Clemson and the fact that it’s a family atmosphere. My family feels appreciated and wanted when they’re around the facility. For me, it was a no-brainer.

“I say I love my kids, when I say my kids, I mean my players. They’re like family. When those opportunities come, you’ve got to look at it, like do you want to leave these kids? And I’m not ready to leave my kids. I’m not ready to leave the staff. My kids have been here since three and five years old, so all they know is Clemson.”

Speaking of his “kids,” Reed has seen the likes of Andrew Booth, Jr. and Mario Goodrich develop into some of the best cornerbacks in the nation under his watch.

Booth and Goodrich were both made first-team All-ACC selections for their respective performance(s) this season. Booth is a likely first-round pick in April’s draft, while Goodrich accepted an invitation to play and participate in the Reese’s Senior Bowl next month.

“As I’ve said, it’s a developmental program,” Reed said. “To see them grab hold of a lot of things that we try to teach them and for them to use them every day, it’s great. It’s like a newborn child. You see them crawl. Then, you’re there to see them walk and then to see them take their first steps and run, it’s a great feeling. These guys deserve it. They put in the work. And now it’s come to fruition.”

Clemson vs Iowa State Cheez-It Bowl Preview

If you were to tell Clemson and Iowa State before the season that they’d be playing each other in a bowl game in Florida, they’d have rightly assumed it would’ve been the Orange Bowl in a College Football Playoff semifinal.

Iowa State came into the year loaded with experience and talent coming off a breakthrough 2020 season, and Clemson came into the year as … Clemson.

It should say something about what Dabo Swinney has created that a 9-3 season is considered a massive disappointment. This game isn’t just about closing with a strong victory to get to ten wins. It’s about what might be happening going forward for a program that’s used to any season-ending losses coming in the playoff.

Former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables is the new Oklahoma head coach, and a few players are leaving for the transfer portal, but the nation’s second-best scoring D – the pass rush is still great and the run defense is a rock – is still going to be amazing.

Iowa State was shaky down the stretch, but the passing game finished as the best in the Big 12, the running game is strong, and it plays a little defense, too, finishing tenth in the nation overall and second in the Big 12.

During Clemson’s Cheez-It Bowl player-coordinator press conference on Sunday morning, D.J. Uiagalelei was asked for an update on his health status heading into the bowl game vs. Iowa State.

The Tigers’ sophomore quarterback sustained a sprained knee in the first half against Louisville on Nov. 6. He then sported a bulky brace for Clemson’s remaining three regular-season games.

Additionally, he had a splint on the index finger of his throwing hand. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said last month that Uiagalelei was dealing with “a tendon thing in there that he’s got to keep taped up.”

“I feel like right now, I’m healthy,” Uiagalelei said on Sunday. “But of course, I won’t be completely healthy. But I’ll be perfectly fine to be able to go out there and play the game to my full ability. Eventually, in the offseason, I’ll get more healthier and get 100 percent. But right now, I’m feeling perfectly fine.”

In 12 games this season, Uiagalelei has completed 54.7 percent of his passes for 2,059 yards and nine touchdowns with nine interceptions, while rushing for 296 yards on 99 carries (3.0 average) with four rushing scores.

The Cheez It-Bowl is set to kick off at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla., and will be televised on ESPN.
