Dabo Swinney and Co. have had to weather the storm that’s affected Clemson all season — the injury bug.

Just as it appeared that the Tigers were getting healthier at the receiver position — the room that’s dealt with the most injuries — they were delivered another blow this week.

Clemson, which will already be without six scholarship receivers — Justyn Ross, Will Taylor, Brannon Spector, Ajou Ajou, and Frank Ladson, Jr. for Wednesday’s Cheez-It Bowl— is now down E.J. Williams.

Swinney announced that Williams, who was not at practice on Monday, will miss Wednesday’s game as he’s in the team’s COVID-19 protocols.

It’s been a tough-luck season for the sophomore receiver out of Phenix City (Ala.), who returned to practice at the start of bowl preparations after missing the last two regular-season games with a leg injury.

Swinney was asked just how big of a concern Clemson’s lack of depth at the receiver position is.

“Well, we’ve had sevens scholarship receivers out the last two games, so we’re beyond that now,” he said. “We just roll with it. We’re experienced in not having guys. There’s nothing you can do, get the next guys ready. Excited about that.”

Analysts weigh in on Clemson having no opt-outs for Cheez-It Bowl

During a press conference on Sunday, Clemson super senior linebacker James Skalski explained why the Tigers didn’t have any players opt out of their Cheez-It Bowl matchup against Iowa State on Wednesday at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

“We get to play football,” Skalski said. “Yeah, we’ve been to the playoffs and on bigger stages, but to us, we get to go play a game again. We get a chance to go represent Clemson and show everyone what we can do, including ourselves. I think we all just love playing ball, and we love being together.”

On Monday, during the Packer and Durham show on the ACC Network, co-hosts Mark Packer and Wes Durham discussed Skalski’s comments and weighed in on Clemson having no opt-outs for the Cheez-It Bowl.

Durham: “Another positive from the weekend — no Clemson opt outs for the Cheez-It Game later this week in Orlando. That’s the surprising piece for a program like this, Pack. Because programs that didn’t have nearly the success Clemson’s had the last four or five years, you’d think, OK, they’re going to quote ‘a regular bowl game,’ maybe the Tigers wouldn’t be interested. Not the case. Not the case at all.”

Packer: “That’s what Skalski was talking about — the culture of this program that Dabo has built, these dudes want to play ball. So, to me, that is a sign. When you’re used to playing in the Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Cotton Bowl — when you’re one of those dudes, all of a sudden they say, ‘Hey, you’re going to the Cheez-It Bowl.’ The natural response would’ve been, ‘Ah, who wants to go to the Cheez-It Bowl?’ Not these dudes. They want to play football.”

ORLANDO, Fla. — A new on-field assistant for the Tigers, who wasn’t expected to be on the field for the Cheez-It Bowl, will indeed be Wednesday afternoon.

On Monday, The Clemson Insider reported that one of the Clemson assistant coaches had tested positive for COVID-19. We have further information to release on the situation and who will be on field for the Cheez-It Bowl.

Multiple sources have confirmed to TCI that Thomas Austin is the assistant coach that tested positive. Austin had been coaching the tight ends during the bowl season as new tight end coach Kyle Richardson recovered from back surgery.

Earlier this month when Swinney announced the new coaching changes, he talked about how disappointed Richardson was not to be able to be on the field due to his surgery.

Sources tell TCI that Richardson is with the team in Orlando and will be on the field coaching tight ends for the bowl game.

Swinney asked to ‘elaborate’ on the state of the Clemson football program

Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Iowa State’s Matt Campbell met with the media on Tuesday during the Cheez-It Bowl Head Coaches Press Conference at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando, Fla., ahead of the two teams’ bowl matchup Wednesday at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Swinney was asked how he would describe the current state of his program, and he gave a concise answer — at first.

“As good as it’s ever been,” he said.

Swinney was asked to elaborate on his response, then rattled off reasons why he thinks Clemson’s program is in as good of shape as ever — starting with the personnel that will be back on its roster next season, as well as the 2022 recruiting class that the Tigers signed earlier this month.

“Well, we’ve got a great young nucleus of players,” he said. “We’ve got just about everybody back. There’s not a single lineman that’s going to play that’s not back. All the running backs are back. Eventually, we’ll get all these receivers back. We’ve got an unbelievable tight end room. We’ve got a great young quarterback that’s gotten better and better through the year.”

“We’ve got a great recruiting class coming in, nine midyears,” Swinney continued. “We’ve got a pretty good defensive line. We might lose one, but they could all be back. Everybody inside is back. We may lose a corner. We’re definitely going to lose one. We’re going to lose one safety, a couple linebackers, but we’ve got all those great young guys that have gained a lot of experience. We’ve got our kicker back, he’s pretty good. We’ve got a couple good young snappers that nobody knows about that can zip that sucker back there. We’ve still got another Swinney to hold the ball.”

Swinney added Clemson also has a “a great coaching staff,” and that “we still are in Clemson, South Carolina.”

“We’ve got the best game-day experience, environment in the country,” he said. “I mean, I don’t know what else I could say.”

Swinney also pointed out that Clemson (9-3, 6-2 ACC) saw its three losses this season come to Georgia (the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff), eventual ACC Champion Pittsburgh, and NC State (No. 18 in the final CFP rankings) in double-overtime in Raleigh.

“We just won nine football games, and we’re a couple plays away from being in the playoff as well,” Swinney said. “We lost to a good Georgia team on a pick-six. They’re pretty good. We lost to a really good NC State team in September, at their place, in double overtime. We lost to the ACC Champion, Pitt, that just made a couple more plays than we did. But our team competed every snap, all year, and never made any excuses — and they’re all here.

“So, if you can’t get excited about that, I don’t know what else there is to be excited about.”

Swinney certainly feels his program is in a better spot now than it was a decade ago.

“So, we’ve got, again, a great group of people,” he said. “We’ve won with people, and we’ve still got a great group of people. So, we’re in a lot better shape today than we were 10 years ago, I can tell you that.”

“Is that elaboration enough?” Swinney, added smiling.

ORLANDO, Fla. — We wanted to pass along the latest we’ve gathered regarding Clemson’s COVID-19 situation ahead of its Cheez-It Bowl matchup vs. Iowa State on Wednesday.

In speaking with a source on Monday, TCI has learned that three Tigers have tested positive for COVID-19. We can tell you that one of those is an assistant coach, another is a support staffer, and the other is a receiver.

We know that sophomore receiver E.J. Williams was not at Clemson’s bowl practice on Monday afternoon, although we can’t confirm at this time whether Williams is the receiver that tested positive.

We will keep you updated as we pick up additional information on the Tigers’ COVID-19 situation heading into the Cheez-It Bowl, which is set for a 5:45 p.m. kickoff Wednesday at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
