Penn State adds former NFL QB as offensive analyst

Penn State adds former Cleveland Browns draft pick to football staff as analyst

Penn State has a new addition to the football staff, and he brings a bit of NFL experience at the quarterback position. [autotag]Charlie Frye[/autotag], who was most recently a quarterbacks coach with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins in 2021, has joined the Penn State staff as an offensive analyst. Greg Pickel of On3 was among the first to report the news of the staff addition.

Frye played college football for Akron and was a third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2005 NFL draft, a rare draft that went down without a single player from Penn State drafted but did see kicker [autotag]Robbie Gould[/autotag] become one of the top undrafted free agents with the benefit of hindsight. Frye was drafted in the same QB class that saw Alex Smith go No. 1 overall to the San Francisco 49ers and Aaron Rodgers slip all the way down to No. 18 to the Green Bay Packers.

Frye spent two full seasons with the Browns before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2007. He signed with the Oakland Raiders for the 2009 season, his last in the NFL before getting started with a coaching career.

Frye began his coaching career as an offensive coordinator for Jones High school in Florida and eventually made his way to the Florida Gators as a director of player development in 2016. He would go on to take on the role of wide receivers coach at Ashland in 2018 and became an offensive coordinator for Central Michigan and quarterbacks coach in 2019 under current head coach Jim McElwain, whom he worked for at Florida.

Frye returned to the state of Florida to serve as the quarterbacks coach for the Dolphins, where he worked with former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Frye helped Tagovailoa improve his completion percentage and passer rating in his one season in Miami.

Overall, it doesn’t seem like a bad addition to the program. Offensive analysts do not assist in any direct coaching but can help the coaching staff in breaking down film. Having the knowledge of a pro quarterback can always come in handy as offensive coordinator [autotag]Mike Yurcich[/autotag] hopes to get the most out of Sean Clifford and begin grooming a young option like [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] for the role down the line.

Miami Dolphins hire new QB coach who has coached Tua Tagovailoa before

The Miami Dolphins have not yet hired a new OC, but have made a move to make Tua Tagovailoa more comfortable with their new QB coach, Cha…

The Miami Dolphins are set to enter their second season with former Alabama star quarterback and No. 5 overall selection Tua Tagovailoa. Though many doubt his abilities after seeing him start for most of the season, he will head into the 2021 offseason as the starting quarterback for the franchise.

In his rookie season, Tagovailoa posted decent numbers, given his situation, but not enough for NFL fans to praise him in comparison to other quarterbacks from the 2020 draft class.

In 20 appearances, he tallied 1,814 yards on 64% completion, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Dolphins parted ways with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, whom many fans blamed for the lack of explosiveness in Tagovailoa’s game. They still have not hired a replacement.

However, Miami hired a coach out of the collegiate level, Charlie Frye, who most recently served as the offensive coordinator at Central Michigan.

While this may appear to be a bit of a unique hire, outside of Frye’s experience as a quarterback and an offensive coach, but there’s a specific reason the Dolphins brought him in.

Frye and Tagovailoa have worked together in the past.

Their paths crossed in 2016, as Tagovailoa participated in the Elite 11 quarterback competition.

While there are rumors surrounding Tagovailoa’s future with the Dolphins, as Deshaun Watson’s name continues to float near the South Florida franchise regarding a trade, this move by the Miami front office makes it seem like they are that much more committed to Tagovailoa’s success with the team.

Miami Dolphins announce hiring of new quarterbacks coach

Out with the old, in with the new. The Miami Dolphins are continuing their purge of offensive coaches associated with former offensive coordinator Chan Gailey — and they’re doing so despite not having formally settled on a replacement for Gailey atop the hierarchy in the offensive coaching room. The latest change comes at quarterbacks coach, where Miami welcomed Robby Brown in 2020 thanks to a history of working with Gailey in New York with the Jets. But he, like former offensive line coach Steve Marshall, will not survive the departure of Gailey from the Dolphins’ staff and will be looking for work elsewhere for 2021.

The Dolphins announced this afternoon that they have named former NFL quarterback Charlie Frye as their new quarterbacks coach.

Miami continuing to make hires to their assistant coaching staff seems to suggest that their offensive coordinator hire will come from within the building; although we currently do not have any indication of whether that could be George Godsey or Eric Studesville. Alternatively, Miami very well may go outside their current staff for a hire; but doing so in this order bucks conventional wisdom and would be something of a surprise at this rate.

Frye, who was a former 3rd-round pick of the Cleveland Browns back in 2005, attempted 677 passes in his NFL career before retirement and a transition to coaching. He’ll have now coached at the high school, college and pro level as he leaves his post as the offensive coordinator at Central Michigan — a title he has held since 2019.
