Chiefs leaders stay home for bye week, do good in Kansas City community

Patrick Mahomes hosted the 15 and the Mahomies inaugural charity Gala and Tyrann Mathieu gave away turkeys during the bye week.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and defensive back Tyrann Mathieu spent their bye week’s doing good in the Kansas City community.

On Thursday evening Mahomes’ foundation hosted their inaugural Gala. There they recognized the work of several local charity organizations and community leaders dedicated to improving the lives of children in Kansas City.

“It’s been amazing,” Mahomes said. “We’ve been able to, just in a short amount of time, impact the Kansas City community, the Lubbock (Texas) community and hopefully soon we can get into the Tyler (Texas) community where I am from. This gala is kind of a stepping stone of the first one and we’re able to be here and see the support that we already have in this Kansas City community.”

Mahomes’ foundation awarded 15 different charity organizations with a $15,000 grant as a way of recognizing the work they’ve done within the community. Here’s a list of the organizations recognized.

  • Special Olympics KC
  • Operation Breakthrough
  • St. Mark’s/United Inner-city Services
  • Variety KC
  • Children’s Mercy Hospital
  • Kansas City, MO Public School Foundation
  • Kansas City, Kansas Public School Foundation
  • Boys & Girls Club of KC
  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace
  • Team Little Owl
  • Citi Year
  • Lead to Read
  • Turn the Page KC
  • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
  • Make a Wish KC

The gala also had a charity auction in order to help raise funds for future charity endeavors. A newly-built playground in the Kansas City area, which was announced at the event by 15 and the Mahomies, is currently in the planning phases.

Several of Mahomes’ teammates were in attendance at the Gala to support their quarterback and friend. The group included Travis Kelce, Blake Bell, Gehrig Dieter and Tyrann Mathieu.

Mathieu also led a busy Thursday. Besides supporting Mahomes at his foundation’s event, Mathieu welcomed his newborn daughter and hosted his annual Thanksgiving event for the first time in Kansas City. Mathieu provided meals to 320 families in need throughout the Kansas City area.

“I look at [Thanksgiving] as a time for people to celebrate their families, their friends and enjoy some great food,” Mathieu said.

Mathieu hoped that he was able to help relieve some of the Holiday stresses so that these community members can enjoy the time to their fullest.

Kansas City is very lucky to have athletes with such a passion for helping the surrounding community and doing everything within their power to make it a better place. If these two events are any indication, both Mahomes and Mathieu will continue to use their platforms to do good in the greater Kansas City community for a very long time.
