Chargers HC Brandon Staley provides update on EDGE Joey Bosa

Joey Bosa cleared concussion protocol.

After sustaining a blow to the head early in Sunday’s matchup against the Bengals, Joey Bosa was taken immediately to the locker room without a visit to the blue tent.

Even though Bosa cleared concussion protocols, Brandon Staley decided to keep him from returning.

Staley said that Bosa’s history with concussions was the reason for pulling him from the game.

“As long as I’m head coach here, I’m going to be making decisions like that in the best interest of our players,” Staley said.

Throughout last season alone, Bosa sustained two concussions.

While a key piece, Staley’s decision to keep Bosa out was not detrimental since his fellow teammates still managed to apply copious amounts of pressure on Joe Burrow.

Bosa’s availability for next weekend’s game against the Giants remains to be seen.

Twitter reacts to Chargers’ victory over Bengals

What the general population thought of the Chargers’ Week 13 win over the Bengals.

The Chargers were off to a hot start against the Bengals, leading by 24. Cincinnati put up a fight in the second and third quarters, putting up 22 unanswered points.

It was at that point when momentum started to change when Los Angeles forced a fumble that was recovered and returned for a touchdown. After leading by just two points, the Bolts won by 17.

Here’s what the general population said about the roller coaster of a game:

Everything we know about Chargers’ 41-22 victory over Bengals

Highlighting everything notable from the Los Angeles Chargers’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

That was fun.

After taking a massive 24-0 lead, the Chargers started to see the game slip out of their hands when the Bengals scored 22 unanswered points.

It was then when both sides of the ball stepped up when it mattered the most to close out the game.

To recap Week 13, here is everything we know:

It was over when…

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Joe Mixon fumbled the football, and it was recovered by Tevaughn Campbell, who returned it for a touchdown. That was the much-needed momentum swing that the Chargers needed.

Notable numbers

Joe Mixon was held to 54 yards on 19 carries (2.8 yards per carry).

Joe Burrow was sacked six times.

The Chargers produced four turnovers (two interceptions, two forced fumbles).

Los Angeles was 3-of-3 in the red zone.

Stars of the game

QB Justin Herbert: 316 passing yards, three touchdowns, catch, tackle.

WR Keenan Allen, Mike Williams & Jalen Guyton: Combined for 14 receptions, 234 receiving yards, and three touchdowns.

Defense: Four turnovers

Quick takes

– After a down performance a week ago, Justin Herbert turned the page and delivered in a big way. Herbert let loose, completing passes of 41, 47, 44, and 33 yards on the afternoon.

– Herbert was a lot more efficient going through his reads and with his decisiveness. In addition, he benefited from the play designs from Joe Lombardi, which opened things up and let his true skillset show.

– Keenan Allen was a threat in the red zone. Big-play Mike Williams came to play, responsible for the first two explosive plays. After being relatively quiet this season, Jalen Guyon was accountable for the other two, one of which was a touchdown on an impressive contested catch in the end zone.

– In an unusual manner, Austin Ekeler fumbled the ball twice. Nonetheless, he still had 104 yards of offense and a score on 19 touches.

– Despite there being four active running backs, Justin Jackson was the only other who touched the football (six carries for 15 yards).

– Credit goes to Brandon Staley for perfectly designing twists/stunts, pressure packages, + schemed 1-on-1s to mask the absence of Joey Bosa, who went down with a head injury.

– Aside from getting to Joe Burrow, the defensive line was a lot more disciplined against the run. Joe Gaziano and Breiden Fehoko got more playing time, and Christian Covington stepped up in place of Justin Jones.

– Asante Samuel Jr. was missed once again, and the lack of depth at the cornerback position showed as a result, as there were way too many chunk plays given up and a couple of big gains.

– Kyzir White and Drue Tranquill continued to establish themselves as one of the most underrated linebacker duos in the league. The two combined for 20 tackles, two for loss, a pass defended, and a sack.

– To win on the road against a Bengals team that was red-hot and not far off from the No. 1 seed was huge for the Chargers and might’ve been their biggest win of the season.

Chargers WR Keenan Allen finds end zone for second time vs. Bengals

The Chargers are perfect in the red zone.

Following an interception by Michael Davis, the Chargers’ offense capitalized.

Justin Herbert connected with Keenan Allen for a wide-open seven-yard touchdown.

This marked Allen’s second score of the day.

Final prediction for Chargers vs. Bengals

Can the Chargers avoid a two-game skid?

In a season of ups and downs, the Chargers are coming off a tough 28-13 loss to the Broncos. There have been glimpses of greatness, but also glimpses of instability with Los Angeles this season.

The up-and-down play has led many pundits to believe that the Bolts are not playoff contenders but rather playoff pretenders, which is concerning at this point in the season.

Since the team’s 4-1 start, they have cooled down considerably, and much of it comes from their inconsistency on the field.

Today, the Chargers face the Bengals as their first opponent in December. It will be entertaining with enticing matchups between two sophomore quarterbacks, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow, and running backs Austin Ekeler and Joe Mixon.

With the Bengals’ surging on both sides of the ball and the exact opposite for the Chargers, it seems like Cincinnati has a clear path to victory. However, despite being inconsistent, Los Angeles can be unpredictable.

Nevertheless, I think the Bolts will surprise everyone by managing to contain Burrow and Mixon and creating enough offensive production to pull away with a victory.

I’m taking the Chargers, 27-24.

5 things to watch for when Chargers face Bengals in Week 13

Highlighting five key storylines for the matchup between the Chargers and Bengals.

Following their loss to the Broncos, the Chargers will look to get back on track against the Bengals on Sunday morning.

With that being said, here are five things to watch for in Los Angeles’ Week 13 bout with Cincinnati:

Justin Herbert looks to bounce back

It wasn’t a great day at the office for Herbert last Sunday. Some of the blame fell on the poor pass protection and dropped passes. Still, Herbert had opportunities yet made questionable decisions and throws, which included two costly interceptions in the fourth quarter. Herbert has struggled with his post-snap reads when his pre-snap read is eliminated, and the Bengals have a pretty solid defensive personnel, and defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo does a great job with designing pressure packages and disguised coverages. Herbert’s play is crucial to determining the Chargers’ success, as he looks to outduel fellow 2020 first-rounder Joe Burrow.

Big game for Austin Ekeler?

The Chargers’ backfield is a mystery. But despite not having an option to take some of the load off, the do-it-all back has managed to carry all of it himself. Logging six total touchdowns in the past three games, Ekeler has a chance to have another big performance, particularly through the air. The Bengals have given up 614 receiving yards to opposing running backs, the fourth-highest total in the league. Cincinnati’s opponents have targeted their backs 107 times this season. Great opportunity for Ekeler to exploit Cincinnati’s linebackers.

Pass defense

One of the Chargers’ most significant issues recently has been the cornerback play, and it’s been Tevaughn Campbell, who’s been the primary culprit. With Asante Samuel Jr. out (concussion), Campbell has struggled in coverage. The group will draw a young, ascending duo of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase has 50 receptions for 906 yards and nine touchdowns, while Higgins is coming off his best performance of the season, finishing with six catches for 114 yards and one score. Limiting them, especially in third-down situations, is key for Herbert to get more opportunities.

Interior defensive line rotation

The Chargers had a great showing against the run when they played the Steelers in Week 11, but they took a step back against Denver, allowing 147 yards on the ground. One of the primary factors for the poor play was due to personnel. Rather than rolling with the team’s best run defenders, Breiden Fehoko and Joe Gaziano, Jerry Tillery played most of the snaps out of any interior defender, in which he struggled. Los Angeles is better in that department when those two are on the field, which is why it’s imperative that Fehoko and Gaziano get more playing time to slow a red-hot Joe Mixon.

Matt Feiler’s return

Feiler did not play last weekend due to an ankle injury, and it’s safe to say his presence was missed. In place of him was Senio Kelemete, who allowed six pressures, two hits, and a sack. Getting Feiler back is vital, as he has been a dominant asset up front this season. The Chargers are set to face an imposing defensive line that features D.J. Reader, who is Cincinnati’s highest-graded defender by Pro Football Focus (83.4). He has 18 run stops and 19 pressures.

Chargers’ causes for concern vs. Bengals in Week 13

A look at some causes for concern as the Los Angeles Chargers gear up to face the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Chargers face the Bengals in Week 13 after suffering a loss to the Broncos.

Now 6-5 and in the thick of the playoff race, Los Angeles has a few question marks surrounding them.

With that being said, here are three reasons why the Bolts should be concerned about their matchup against Cincinnati.

– After showing improvement, the Chargers took a tumble against the run last weekend against the Broncos. Now, the team faces Bengals running back Joe Mixon, who poses a threat. The fifth-year back combined for 58 carries for 288 yards and four touchdowns in his previous two performances. Los Angeles has given up 140 or more rushing yards in seven games this season. If Mixon can’t be contained, it will be a long day for the Bolts.

– The Chargers’ offense lacks consistent efficiency, and they’re running into a Bengals defense that is finding its footing. Cincinnati is sixth in the league in points allowed (20.5), rushing yards allowed per game (93.7), and 11th in total yards allowed per game (348.2).

– The Chargers’ passing defense has been a real issue as of late, and one of the primary factors is due to Asante Samuel Jr.’s absence. Samuel was ruled out again with a concussion, which means that Tevaughn Campbell will get the start in place of him. Campbell has struggled in an expanded role. Los Angeles will draw the duo of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase has 50 receptions for 906 yards and nine touchdowns, while Higgins is coming off his best performance of the season, with six catches for 114 yards and one score.

Who are the experts taking in Chargers vs. Bengals?

Find out who national pundits are favoring in the matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals.

The Los Angeles Chargers are considered 3.5-point underdogs to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13 of the 2021 season. The over/under is 49.5 points, per Tipico Sportsbook.

That means oddsmakers are taking bets on whether the two teams will combine to score more than or fewer than 49.5 points.

My score prediction for the game is a 27-21 win for the Bengals, with a combined total of 48 points. So if I were putting money behind my prediction, I’d bet the under.

As for game picks, analysts are favoring Cincinnati, with a couple taking the upset.
