Two more candidates requested to interview for Chargers’ offensive coordinator position

The Chargers have now requested to interview four candidates.

The Chargers requested to interview Titans tight ends coach Luke Steckel and Rams senior offensive assistant Greg Olson for their offensive coordinator position.

Steckel has been on the Titans staff since 2013 and spent the last two seasons as the tight ends coach. Before that, Steckel worked as an offensive assistant and assistant wide receivers coach. Before his days with Tennessee, he was an assistant to the head coach with the Browns for four seasons.

Olson joined the Rams after spending the last four seasons as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator. He’s also been an offensive coordinator for the Jaguars, Buccaneers, Rams, and Lions. Olson also has over two decades of experience as a quarterbacks coach.

Los Angeles has now requested to interview four candidates for their offensive coordinator vacancy, with the other two being Zac Robinson and Jerrod Johnson.

Report: Chargers request interview with Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson

The Chargers are looking to bring Zac Robinson to interview for their offensive coordinator position.

As the Chargers look to find their next offensive coordinator, they requested to interview Rams quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Zac Robinson for the position, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Robinson started as an Oklahoma State star quarterback in 2007-09. After that, he bounced around the NFL for four years, mainly as a practice-squad quarterback, and never appeared in a game. Robinson then became a quarterback trainer in the Dallas area and an analyst for Pro Football Focus.

Rams head coach Sean McVay, who has hired various young, inexperienced coaches, brought in Robinson as assistant quarterbacks coach. Robinson moved to assistant wide receivers coach in 2020, then back to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2021. When Kevin O’Connell got the Vikings head coaching job, McVay hired Robinson as quarterback coach and pass-game coordinator, where he elevated Matt Stafford and helped Baker Mayfield find success in L.A upon becoming the starter.

Chargers HC Brandon Staley is familiar with Robinson, having been on the Rams’ staff in 2020 when he was their defensive coordinator.

Report: Vikings’ Wes Phillips declines Chargers’ interview request for offensive coordinator position

The Chargers are looking for their next offensive coordinator, but it will not be Vikings’ Wes Phillips.

The Chargers are looking for their next offensive coordinator, but it will not be Vikings OC Wes Phillips.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Phillips turned down Los Angeles’ interview request and will stay with Minnesota in the same position.

Phillips has over 15 years of NFL coaching experience.

Phillips moved to the Vikings from the Rams with Kevin O’Connell when he was hired as the head coach in Minnesota last year.

Phillips spent three years with the Rams as their tight ends coach and passing game coordinator.

Before making the move to Los Angeles, Phillips was a quality control/ offensive assistant, offensive line coach and tight ends coach with the Cowboys and a tight ends coach with the then Redskins.

QB Justin Herbert will have input in Chargers’ next offensive coordinator

The Chargers need to find someone to unlock Justin Herbert’s full potential.

The Chargers will have a new offensive coordinator for the 2023 NFL season, and their star quarterback will have a say in who gets to call the plays.

On Thursday, general manager Tom Telesco spoke with the media at his end-of-season press conference, noting Herbert has earned that responsibility.

When asked what traits the team will be looking for in their next offensive coordinator, Telesco cited leadership, the ability to teach and communicate concepts in a simple manner, backgrounds, and who they’ve learned from.

Additionally, Telesco noted experience is not necessarily as important.

This season, the Chargers ranked near the bottom in every rushing offense category. But most notably, Justin Herbert finished 2022 with career lows in touchdowns and yards per attempt.

That is why it is imperative for Los Angeles to successfully find and bring in someone who will not only improve the run game but unlock Herbert’s full potential.

Predicting the next Chargers offensive coordinator

Taking a crack at predicting who will be the Los Angeles Chargers’ newest offensive coordinator.

After letting go of Joe Lombardi, the Chargers’ search for their new offensive coordinator is underway.

This will be one of the most polarizing positions, given the ability to work with one of the best young quarterbacks Justin Herbert and a solid supporting cast.

With that, Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez and Alex Katson take a crack at guessing who will be the new offensive play-caller in Los Angeles.

What Chargers HC Brandon Staley said at end-of-season press conference

Highlighting what Chargers HC Brandon Staley said at his end-of-season press conference.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley spoke to the media to express how he felt about the 2022 season, his feelings after parting ways with Joe Lombardi and what he’s looking for in the team’s next offensive coordinator.

Here are some notable things that Staley said on Wednesday:

Chargers WR Keenan Allen talks new offense, impressions of Brandon Staley

Find out what Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen thinks of the new coaching staff.

Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen is set to play under his third offensive coordinator since entering the league back in 2013.

At Monday’s media availability, Allen talked about OC Joe Lombardi’s offense, saying that it is very similar to the one they used last year, but with different terminology and not as strict, adding that he feels that’ll allow them to be able to play more freely.

Lombardi is a Saints HC Sean Payton disciple who leaned heavily on the pass when he was the offensive coordinator in with the Lions. The plan is to mesh some of the concepts learned in New Orleans and what worked for Herbert in college and his rookie season.

Allen also had high praise for his new head coach, Brandon Staley.

“I feel like we have a great staff,” Allen said. “I feel good about Coach Staley. I feel like he’s smart and he knows the game well. I love the way he talks. He talks with passion, energy and confidence. I’m excited.”

Allen, who’s entering Year 9, will be a key piece of the new offense. He will look to surpass 1,000 receiving yards after falling eight yards shy from achieving the feat for the fourth-straight season in 2020.
