Podcast: Reviewing Jags’ 2022 draft class

On the latest episode of the @TDJaguarsPod, the crew reviewed the rest of the Jaguars 2022 draft class after previously looking at their Day 1 moves.

The highly anticipated 2022 NFL Draft has concluded for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the other 31 teams in the NFL. The Jags exited the annual event with seven selections, most of which were on the defensive side.

After reviewing the Jags’ Day 1 moves in the last episode of “Touchdown Jaguars!” Jags Wire contributor Phil Smith and I looked at the rest of the draft class in Episode 10. We also discussed the notable undrafted players they were able to add.

While looking into the decisions the Jags made on Day 2-3, we specifically discussed why the Jags added two cornerbacks (Montaric Brown and Gregory Junior) at the end of the draft, why the Jags selected Chad Muma after selecting Devin Lloyd, and much more.

Poll: Who was the Jaguars fans’ favorite pick from the 2022 NFL Draft?

The Jacksonville Jaguars made seven total picks in the 2022 NFL draft. Who was the fans’ favorite selection from the draft?

The Jacksonville Jaguars made seven total selections in the 2022 NFL Draft. They addressed some needs, but with most of their early selections, they chose the best player on their board. With the draft concluding over a week ago, we wanted to poll the fans on who their favorite selection was from the draft.

The four choices we’ll include are No. 1 pick Travon Walker, as well as the three picks the Jags made after him in Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd, Kentucky center Luke Fortner, and Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma.

Walker will likely be the choice for many, but Lloyd and Fortner deserve some votes, too.

Jacksonville traded back into the first round to get Lloyd. He was a stud with the Utes. He collected 111 total tackles with 22 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, four interceptions, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble in his final season in Utah. His numbers in 2021 prove that he is the total package as a linebacker.

It’s hard to get excited about a center, but Fortner is likely the replacement for former starter Brandon Linder. Many draft analysts raved about his IQ and character. He was an excellent leader for the Wildcats the past few seasons.

LB Chad Muma says Jaguars see him as a ‘money backer’ in their defense

Jaguars LB Chad Muma shared what position Jacksonville wants him to play in its defense.

The Jacksonville Jaguars wouldn’t have selected Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma with the 70th overall pick in the third round if they didn’t have a plan on how to use him. On an appearance on the “Frank Frangie Show” on 1010XL Sports Radio, Muma said the Jaguars want him to be the money backer in their defense.

The money backer (or money linebacker) role was created by Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles that helped his defenses in Arizona adapt to modern rules that favor offenses. The position is a linebacker and safety hybrid who can play in the box and cover wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs while also having the ability to play the run. The money backer is essentially a sub-package position, but Bowles has heavily utilized it where these players see the field just as much or more than base defense starters.

Current Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell was one of Bowles’ top assistants for many years and will likely take the same approach as his mentor.

“The NFL has become such a passing game too, that I’m also able to do that,” Muma said. “If they’re running the ball, I’m going to be throwing my head in there and making plays and stopping that run, but if it translates to the pass as well, I’m going be dropping back and making those plays and getting some picks here and there and breaking on balls and doing all that as well.”

In time, Muma could become the Jags’ starter at MIKE linebacker, which would be closer to his role in college.

He said he was a two-time captain at Wyoming and is comfortable calling plays and making checks.

“So that’s definitely something I see myself developing into, is that green dot player, where I’m able to make those calls,” Muma said. “Even at the Senior Bowl, when I was there, I had the green dot inside my helmet, so I was making the calls at the Senior Bowl, so I’m already kind of exposed to that mic in your head. I’m looking forward to making sure I understand the defense so I can be that player for Jacksonville.”

Last year, it was clear the Jags needed to make changes in the middle of their defense as the production there was inconsistent. Now with Muma (and the other additions made this offseason), they have several players who shouldn’t have any trouble taking on the responsibilities that come with being a green dot player.

3 things to know about Jaguars linebacker Chad Muma

Here are three things to know about Jaguars linebacker Chad Muma who they took in the third round of the NFL draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars turned a lot of heads again in the third round when they used their second selection in the round to take Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma. It was odd because general manager Trent Baalke traded back into the first round on Day 1 to take Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd and signed former Atlanta Falcon linebacker Foyesade Oluokun in free agency.

However, Baalke and head coach Doug Pederson said they would take the best player available rather than reach for a player that fills a need. Regardless of how much sense it makes for the Jaguars, Muma is considered a steal because some draft analysts expected Muma to go in the second round.

Here are three things to know about Muma:

Jaguars reveal jersey numbers for their 2022 rookie selections

The Jags have revealed the jersey numbers for their seven 2022 NFL Draft selections.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made seven selections in the draft last week, starting with notables Travon Walker and Devin Lloyd in Round 1. On Tuesday, the team revealed the numbers for each of those picks and some of the numbers are ones that fans are very familiar with.

Starting with Walker, he will be wearing the number many expected, and that’s No. 44. It was the number he wore at Georgia, and it’s also the number that was on the jersey he took pictures with at his introductory press conference. The number is one very familiar to Jags fans because it was one that former linebacker Myles Jack wore from the time he was drafted in 2016 until his release this offseason.

The Number Lloyd will wear is 33. That’s the number that was once worn by Jags greats and running backs Greg Jones and James Stewart. In college, Lloyd wore No. 0, but that’s a restricted number in the NFL.

As for the Day 2 picks, offensive lineman Luke Fortner will wear No. 79, which was his number with the Kentucky Wildcats. Linebacker Chad Muma will also wear his college  number from his days at Wyoming, which is the No. 48.

Then when it comes to the Day 3 picks, running back Snoop Conner took his number from Ole Miss (24). Cornerback Gregory Junior will wear the No. 30, although he wore No. 27 in college, while fellow cornerback Montaric Brown will wear No. 30, instead of No. 21 like he wore with Arkansas.

Jaguars GM Trent Baalke defends decision to draft another early round LB in Chad Muma

Jaguars GM Trent Baalke explains his decision to take a second linebacker in Chad Muma on Day 2 of the NFL draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars turned a lot of heads when they drafted Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma with the 70th overall pick, their second selection in the third round. It was surprising the Jags went that direction after trading back into the first round to take Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd and signing former Atlanta Falcon Foyesade Oluokun this offseason

Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke and head coach Doug Pederson met with the media on Friday where Baalke defended his decision to take Muma.

He was highly rated on our board for one,” Baalke said about Muma. “He fits the culture we’re trying to build. I don’t think we can ever have enough good linebackers. He’s a green dot guy. He can run the defense. He’s a really good special teams player as well. There’s just a lot to like.”

He added that they also wanted to take a linebacker just in case an injury happens.

Baalke then explained the role they envision Muma playing in Jacksonville.

“How they fit into the system and how much they are going to be used and what packages they are going to be used on, that’s up to Coach Caldwell and the defensive coaching staff,” he said. “I know special teams-wise, he’s going to fit in day one and then you grow your role from there. All these guys have to come in and earn their (spot).

“We’ve got some guys that are here also that are competing for these jobs. It’s not like they come in and a role is given to them. They’ve got to go earn it. We’re very confident at the value, it was a pick we needed to make.”

This was the second straight answer where he mentioned that Muma would have a big role on special teams, which doesn’t make a ton of sense considering Jacksonville used a third-round pick on him. Hopefully, Muma will come in and earn some significant playing time on defense, not just special teams. Maybe a key to that could be a third-down package, but ultimately time will tell what the Jags have in mind for Muma.

Introducing the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2022 NFL Draft class

The 2022 NFL Draft has concluded and here is the #Jaguars’ full seven-player class and some notable info on each selection.

The 2022 NFL Draft has come and gone for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the league’s other 31 teams, and now each organization can focus on the upcoming NFL season. The Jags had the first pick of the whole process along with 11 other picks, which tied them with the Kansas City Chiefs for the most picks in the whole event.

With 12 total picks, the Jags were a busy team and made three trades along the way. That left them with seven selections when the draft ended, most of which were to help on the defensive side.

Now, with the whole draft process, let’s go back and review every pick from No. 1 selection Travon Walker to the Jags’ last pick Montaric Brown.

Instant analysis: Jaguars take another LB in Chad Muma with pick No. 70 of 2022 NFL Draft

The Jags continued to add help at linebacker Day 2 after doing so on Day 1.

The Jacksonville Jaguars continued to beef up their linebacking corps this offseason. They signed former Atlanta Falcon Foyesade Oluokun in free agency and drafted Utah’s Devin Lloyd with the 27th overall pick.

But Jacksonville wasn’t finished. It drafted Wyoming’s Chad Muma with its second third-round pick, making Tony Gilbert’s linebacker room quite crowded.

The selection of Muma is puzzling when considering the franchise already drafted one and paid a lot of money for one in free agency. It gets more head-scratching after realizing that the Jaguars have listed No. 1 overall pick, Travon Walker, as an outside linebacker. So officially, general manager Trent Baalke and head coach Doug Pederson have now added four linebackers this offseason, including Walker.

However, Muma is a solid player and many scouts and media members considered him one of the best linebackers in this year’s class. He racked up 266 tackles, 19 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, three picks, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble in four seasons with the Cowboys. As a senior, he tallied 142 tackles with eight of them being for a loss, 1.5 sacks, and three interceptions.

NFL.com‘s Lance Zierlein likes his see-ball, get-ball mentality and his ability to hunt down runners with good build-up and aggressive demeanor. However, Zierlein noted that he falls prey to false steps and wasted motion at times.

The Jags, Baalke, and Pederson made a great pick with Muma, but finding a way to get him on the field could be challenging. Maybe placing him on special teams will help.

Heading forward, they still need to add talent at several other positions like defensive tackle, offensive tackle, tight end, or wide receiver. With six picks remaining, it will be interesting to see how the Jags address their remaining needs during the last day of the draft Saturday.

2022 NFL Draft: Jags select Wyoming LB Chad Muma with No. 70 overall selection

The Jags double-dipped at the LB position by selecting Wyoming’s Chad Muma with the 70th pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars double-dipped at the linebacker position Friday when they selected linebacker Chad Muma from Wyoming. They drafted Muma after taking Devin Lloyd with the 27th overall pick on Thursday

While the selection is a confusing one, the Jags received great value with it as Muma was projected to be a second-round pick by some. However, his stock probably was hurt some due to playing for a smaller school where the competition level wasn’t the highest.

Muma will join the Jags after accumulating 267 total career tackles with 147 of them being solo tackles. In 2021, he accumulated 142 of those tackles, while also accumulating eight tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Like Travon Walker, Muma caught the attention of scouts at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine. He put up 27 reps in the bench press and ran a 4.63 40-yard dash. These figures played a part in helping him garner a 9.79 Relative Athletic Score, which was among the best at the linebacker position.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein praised Muma for keeping the proper pad level when defending in the box, in addition to his ability to explode to targets and cut off run lanes with plays made to go to the outside. Zierlein also pointed out his aggression challenging blocks, inconsistency with patience and discipline when diagnosing plays, and his lower-body build as a few cons about the former Cowboy.

If Muma is the stud he was in college, he and Lloyd will give the Jags one of the best linebacking corps in the NFL. That’s certainly something new defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell won’t complain about after coming from a Tampa team that was loaded at the position.

Saints draft picks: Best options to take in Rounds 2 and 3

Saints draft picks: Best options to take in Rounds 2 and 3, via @RossJacksonNOLA, @MaddyHudak_94, @DillySanders, and @john_siglerr:

The greatest value in the 2022 NFL draft may lie in Rounds 2 and 3, so it’s kind of discouraging that the New Orleans Saints are entering the draft’s second day with just one pick after all of their first-round maneuvering. But they can still find an upgrade at the No. 49 overall pick, and it would be a surprise if the team doesn’t make more trades to acquire more — or better — picks. Here are four prospects our staff would love to see join the black and gold:
