Who is Chad Henne, Patrick Mahomes’ backup for the Chiefs

With Patrick Mahomes out, the Chiefs have turned the offense over to Chad Henne. Chad who?

The backup quarterback is one play away from being in the game.

Chad Henne has spent plenty of time as a backup and on Sunday he was thrust into the AFC Divisional round game between the Cleveland Browns and his Kansas City Chiefs when Patrick Mahomes was knocked out.

What do we know about the veteran QB?

He played college ball at Michigan and Henne was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round (57th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. He was the fourth quarterback chosen, following Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, and Brian Brohm. His left tackle at Michigan, Jake Long, was the first selection of the draft and would again play alongside Henne in Miami

Henne played five years for Jacksonville, four for Miami, and is in his second season with the Chiefs. Henne was a Chief in 2018 and came back to back up Mahomes this season.

Henne, 35, started the final game of 2020 when Mahomes was rested and the Chiefs lost to the Los Angeles Chargers.

His start prior came in 2014 as a member of the Jaguars. Overall, Henne is 18-36 as a starter.

He threw for 13,208 yards and 60 touchdowns against 63 interceptions.

Prediction for matchup between Chargers, Chiefs in Week 17

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez makes his prediction for the Week 17 matchup.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 1:25 p.m. PT at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chargers are looking to secure their fourth consecutive victory with the hopes of carrying momentum into next season. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are using this game for backups to prove themselves to the coaching staff since the majority of their starters will be out.

Quarterback Justin Herbert will look to get revenge after giving he could the first time out. Herbert has thrown for 4,034 yards with 28 touchdowns, setting an NFL rookie record for TD passes in a season. He’s also set a rookie record with seven 300-yard passing games, and he needs 340 yards passing to break Andrew Luck’s rookie record of 4,374 yards.

On the other side, QB Chad Henne will make his first start since Week 2 of the 2014 season when he was with the Jaguars. Henne will be without key skill players like Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins. However, he will likely benefit from coach Andy Reid calling the plays.

For Los Angeles, they want to snap a losing streak to Kansas City that’s currently at 10 games. Plus, some players and coaches, including Anthony Lynn, are looking to make a statement with their jobs on the line. For the Chiefs, they want to go 15-1 for the first time in franchise history.

Even though Kansas City will be resting their starters, it would be in typical L.A. fashion to lose this one due to poor game management, solidifying Lynn’s fate.

I expect Herbert to have a great game, not one where he surpasses Luck’s yardage record, but he will put up points. Kicker Harrison Butker hits the game-winning field goal to seal the deal.

I’ve got the Chiefs beating the Chargers by the score of 27-24.

Chiefs QB Chad Henne will try to recapture his youth in first start since 2014

Chiefs backup QB Chad Henne discussed his upcoming start against the Chargers on Wednesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs made it official on Wednesday, announcing that backup QB Chad Henne would be the starter against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 17.

While many suspected this was a strong possibility, it was officially announced at the start of the practice week. Henne first received word that he could get the start after the conclusion of the Week 16 game against the Atlanta Falcons. He has been preparing as such ever since.

“Well, kind of through the grapevine, kind of after the game,” Henne said of how he learned he would be starting. “Mike Kafka said, ‘Hey just be ready’ and then he gave me the phone call early yesterday and kind of just got the game plan going and so excited about the opportunity.”

This upcoming game will mark Henne’s first start since joining Kansas City back in 2018. It’ll actually be his first start since an abysmal 2014 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That year, the Jaguars had drafted Blake Bortles and Henne even admitted that he was on a “short leash” that season.

“Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it’s been a while,” Henne said. “It’s crazy to think my last game was 2014. I mean I got all my games in when I was young and then I had like a five or six-year span where I didn’t get any playing time or just like some playing time just when we were up or down, but I’m really excited.”

The Chiefs, however, don’t want Henne to focus on his last start. Andy Reid wants the 35-year-old quarterback to go out there and recapture his youth on Sunday.

“Yeah, well listen, I think he’s excited,” Reid said. “I always tell him, ‘Act like you’re 20. Try to remember those days and feel it.’ So, he’s all in. He’s excited, so a great opportunity for him. I mean, these guys love to play the game. That’s the neat part about it. It’s not like guys are ducking out of playing, they all want to get in there and go, but that’s a decision that I had to make there. But Chad’s very excited.”

Henne isn’t taking this opportunity lightly, either. There are only 32 starting quarterbacks each week and he knows the type of responsibility that comes with it. He knows that he has a chance to help his team achieve a 15-1 record for the first time in franchise history.

“I mean, it’s cool,” Henne said. “Anytime you get an opportunity to go out there and be the starter in the NFL, you don’t take it for granted and play like you’re 20.”

Henne has made spot appearances twice for the Chiefs so far this season. He won’t be worried about rust, especially when he’s already scored a touchdown this year.

The coaching staff has shown confidence in not only Henne’s ability as a passer but also his athleticism at the ripe old age of 35. They called a zone-read play in the red zone against the Broncos in Week 7 and Henne scored on the play.

“I was like ‘Are they serious right now? We’re going to run some zone right here,'” Henne quipped. “But hey, whatever they call as a quarterback, you try to make the best of it and make it work.”

Don’t expect an unfamiliar looking offense from Henne and the Chiefs on Sunday. The team won’t do much differently with Henne involved. He might not air the ball out as much as Mahomes does and they might lean on the run game a bit more, but this will virtually be the same offense that Mahomes has run all season.

“Yeah, I mean, there are definitely some different nuances, but for the most part it’s just what we’ve been running all year,” Henne said. “So, I have to be prepared if Patrick were to go down in a game and be able to run the offense, Coach Reid is not going to change anything in-game, so we kind of kept very similar offense to what we’re going to prepare for, for the Chargers, and go out there and execute.”

Another thing that Henne is also looking forward to in his opportunity to start —  the role reversal with QB Patrick Mahomes.

“It’ll be great,” Henne said. “I mean, he’ll be in the game plan, he’ll study the film, he’ll give me some tips, but he’ll be in it, very involved and he’ll help me out just like Matt (Moore) and I helped him out.”

Alongside Henne, a number of young players in the Chiefs’ building will likely get the opportunity to start for the first time. That fact has the building buzzing with excitement and no one is more excited to help lead those players than Henne.

“I’m excited about the group that we’re going to have out there,” Henne said. “You know, should be fun on Sunday.”

Chiefs QB Chad Henne to start vs. Chargers

The 35-year old will make his first start since 2014.

The Chiefs announced that quarterback Chad Henne will start in the season finale against the Chargers this Sunday.

The decision to bench Patrick Mahomes is because Kansas City solidified the No. 1 seed in the AFC with their victory over the Falcons last weekend, which means that the team does not have anything to play for.

Henne, who’s in his 11th season, will start his first game since the 2014 campaign when he played for the Jaguars. The 35-year old has gone 7-of-11 passing for 59 yards in six games since his last start.

Besides Mahomes, coach Andy Reid will probably rest a handful of other key players on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

Los Angeles is looking to end the regular season with their fourth-straight victory, so the probability of that happening with the majority of the Chiefs’ starters not playing is high.

Former Michigan QB to get first NFL start since 2014

With the Chiefs’ playoff spot secured, Mahomes will rest and the former Michigan football QB will get the start against the Chargers.

[jwplayer cZ6yX4xE-XNcErKyb]

Step aside Tom Brady, you won’t be the only former Wolverines quarterback to be starting for your team on this weekend.

While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signal-caller is often the focal point of Michigan football fans who watch the NFL, there will be another former maize and blue field general who will get his time to shine on Sunday. With the Kansas City Chiefs having locked up their postseason berth, star QB Patrick Mahomes is going to sit out the game vs. the Los Angeles Chargers. So what does that mean?

It means it’s Chad Henne time.

According to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, Michigan’s past four-year starting QB is getting another shot to lead an NFL squad, as the Chiefs will be starting Henne this Sunday with Mahomes resting.

Henne’s starting days have been long behind him, as he first got his shot as a second-round pick by Miami after getting another chance with Jacksonville, with his last start coming in 2014. He’s been with Kansas City since 2018, playing a backup role for Mahomes throughout. While he’s seen some time this year, his two game appearances were both in mop-up duty.

Chiefs announce QB Chad Henne will start vs. Chargers in Week 17

No more questions, the Kansas City Chiefs will rest Patrick Mahomes in Week 17.

Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid said on Monday that he planned to rest some starters against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 17. We now have official confirmation on at least one player who will sit out.

On Wednesday, the team announced that backup QB Chad Henne will be the starter against the Chargers in Week 17.

“Chad (Henne) will go ahead and play, yeah,” Reid told reporters. “And there’s a good chance that Matt (Moore) is up, but we’ll see when it’s all said and done how that all works out.”

Henne, 35, has been the backup quarterback for Kansas City during the past three seasons. This will be Henne’s first game started since the 2014 NFL season, back when he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars. This year, Henne had an opportunity to play in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos and Week 8 against the New York Jets. He’s played 22 offensive snaps between those two games, totaling five completions on six attempts for 30 yards. He also rushed for a score against the Broncos in Week 7.

Henne spent most of the 2019 season on injured reserve, giving way to Matt Moore, who started two games in place of Mahomes that year. It appears that Moore could be called up from the practice squad this week to play backup to Henne.

Henne getting the start in Week 17 means that Mahomes’ regular season is over. He’ll have finished the season with a career-best 390 completions for 4,740 yards, 38 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also added 62 carries for 308 yards and two touchdowns — a career-high in both carries and yards. Those will be the numbers that he’s judged on in this year’s MVP race, which has become increasingly close in the final weeks of the season.

Chiefs’ Chad Henne scores first rushing TD since 2012

Chad Henne scored the final touchdown for the Chiefs Sunday.

Chad Henne has had a long and inglorious career. He is one of those backup quarterbacks who stick around and around and around.

Henne actually did not see game action in the entire 2015 and ’19 seasons. Somehow, probably because Matt Moore retired, he is Patrick Mahomes’ backup in Kansas City.

And he saw action Sunday in Denver as the Chiefs pulverized the Broncos, 43-16, in snowy, freezing conditions.

So, why write about the former Michigan QB? Because he did something he has not accomplished since 2012 when he started six games for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Henne scored a rushing TD in 2012 among the 64 rushing yard he picked up. The TD came on Dec. 2, 2012, in a loss at Buffalo. It was a one-yard run.

He had not found the end zone on a rushing play … until Sunday.

In the fourth quarter, Henne scored on a one-yard run to make it 43-16.

If you are counting, in 13 seasons, Henne has earned more than $35 million.

He has played in eight games since 2014. Talk about a great work life.

Has any good receiver been more cursed with bad quarterbacks than Allen Robinson?

Chicago Bears receiver Allen Robinson has become a great NFL player despite quarterback luck that borders on the tragic.

Some receivers are able to make the most of great quarterback situations. Jerry Rice is the obvious greatest receiver of all time, but you think it helped his case that he was able to transition from Joe Montana to Steve Young at his peak? Outside of having to learn to catch a ball that’s thrown left-handed with Young (which is actually a legitimate thing that takes getting used to), that’s not a bad switch in starters over a period of time from 1985 through 1998.

Inversely, there are receivers who are never seen at their ultimate potential because the quarterbacks they’re given are just not good enough to maximize their attributes. That’s a nice way of saying that if your quarterbacks are foofoo-caca, it doesn’t matter how good you are as a receiver — you’re going to struggle.

Allen Robinson, who currently plays for the Chicago Bears and used to play for Penn State and the Jacksonville Jaguars, can relate. During Robinson’s three years with the Nittany Lions from 2011 through 2013, his primary quarterbacks were Matt McGloin, who completed 58.1% of his passes and threw 11 touchdowns to 11 interceptions in four seasons with the Raiders… and Christian Hackenberg, who was so inept, he never played a snap of regular-season NFL football despite the fact that the Jets selected him with the 51st overall pick in the 2016 draft. Hackenburg was last seen washing out of the AAF after a profanity-laced outburst, and trying to become a major-league pitcher.

Despite all that, Robinson managed to catch 177 passes for 2,479 yards and 17 touchdowns in his collegiate career, which led the Jaguars to select him with the 61st overall pick in the 2014 draft. To accelerate his NFL transition, the Jaguars gave him two primary quarterbacks from 2017 through 2017 — Blake Bortles and Chad Henne. Yeah, the hits just keep on coming. Bortles actually managed to make the Pro Bowl in 2015 with 35 touchdown passes (Robinson led the league with 14 touchdown catches that season), but that didn’t last on Bortles’ part. Henne completed 57.6% of his passes over five seasons with the Jags, with 27 touchdowns and 26 interceptions.

Finally a free agent in 2018, Allen decided to sign a three-year, $42 million contract with the Chicago Bears, picking that team over the Packers.

“With all things being equal, Chicago was a place I had my eyes on from a football standpoint,” Robinson told First Coast News back then.

“It’s a spot with a lot of benefits as far as it being close to home. The close-to-home thing was a very minimal factor but it was still a factor.

“For me, going into the whole free agency process, Chicago was definitely a team I had my eye on, from the standpoint that they had just hired Coach [Matt] Nagy. Coach Nagy was a big part of it… I’m a big fan of his system and his offense.”

Sadly, Nagy’s system and his offense also came with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky — as opposed to some guy named Aaron Rodgers. Robinson caught 55 passes for 754 yards and four touchdowns in 2018 as Trubisky actually made the Pro Bowl, but as was the case with Bortles, it didn’t stick. Trubisky regressed and struggled in 2019 and into 2020, until he was benched in favor of Nick Foles in Week 3. That looked like it would go well when Foles threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes against the Falcons in a 30-26 win over the Falcons, and Robinson caught one of those touchdowns, but the two subsequent games with Foles as starter did not go as well. Foles’ accuracy in the Bears’ 20-19 Thursday night win over the Buccaneers was especially… difficult.

Robinson is a free agent when the 2021 league year begins, unless he signs a new deal with the Bears, or he’s given the franchise tag. Somehow, through all these quarterback debacles, he’s caught 390 passes for 5,170 yards and 35 touchdowns in his NFL career. Imagine what he could do if the other guy at the beginning of all those catches actually knew what he was doing.

#FreeAllenRobinson. Nobody in the NFL deserves it more.

Chiefs backup QB Chad Henne on Jordan Ta’amu: ‘He’s been phenomenal’

Henne is a fan of Jordan Ta’amu’s upside.

The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t had a ton of repetitions to go around at training camp.

The way that training camp is set up this year, the Chiefs are in a bit of a “time crunch” as Andy Reid described it. That’s led to the first-team offense (Patrick Mahomes) and the second-team offense (Chad Henne) getting a lot of work. There hasn’t been much in the way of repetitions leftover for the two other quarterbacks on the roster, Matt Moore and Jordan Ta’amu.

Despite limited repetitions, the Chiefs are taking notice of the youngest quarterback on the roster. Even Andy Reid recently praised the work ethic of 22-year-old Jordan Ta’amu this past week. When Chiefs backup QB Chad Henne spoke to the media on Monday, there was nothing but praise for his new teammate.

“Jordan, he’s been phenomenal,” Henne said. “He’s a young, talented guy. He was in the XFL and had some experience there. He came in and he’s willing to learn. He’s done some really great things. Today was a good opportunity for him to go out there doing the scout team for the defense. He did a really nice job. He’s just going to keep learning, picking our brains each and every day, but he has a great upside.”

Alex Smith gets a ton of credit for Mahomes’ development, however, Henne was the backup quarterback who was there for Mahomes during his MVP-winning 2018 season. He was happy to become a mentor to Mahomes during his first season as a starting quarterback and he did a fine job.

Should Ta’amu stick around beyond the preseason, Henne will be instrumental in his development. It’s good to know that Henne believes Ta’amu has the talent, but also the mindset to be successful in this league. Not everyone is built that way.

An interesting note from Henne is that Ta’amu is already running the scout team offense for the Chiefs’ first-team defense. Ta’amu’s skillset is very similar to that of Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson, who comes to Kansas City in Week 1. Ta’amu running the scout team would suggest the obvious, that he’s looking at a job on the practice squad in 2020.
