On this day: Havlicek goes for 54; Celts snap Dubs’ 54-game streak

On this date, the Boston Celtics’ John Havlicek scored 54 points, and Boston snapped the Golden State Warriors 54-game home winning streak.

On this day in 1973, legendary Boston Celtic forward John Havlicek hit 24 field goals in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, matching a record held today by only Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan.

The game was a blowout, the Massachusetts franchise winning 134-109 behind Havlicek’s record-setting performance.

Hondo’s 54-point game came in a series against the Atlanta Hawks that Boston would eventually win four games to two, only to fall to Phil Jackson and Walt Frazier’s New York Knicks in the East Conference finals four games to three as New York went on to win its second and last title.

It was also on this date that shooting guard Bobby Wilson was waived by the Celtics, signed earlier in the season by the team in free agency.

Wilson, who played his college ball at Wichita State, was drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the 52nd overall pick of the 1974 NBA Draft, where he would play two seasons before being waived by the Bulls.

He averaged 2 points and 0.6 assists per game over the 25 games he played for Boston.

It is also the anniversary of six victories since the season of the Celtics’ last championship in 2007-08. The first was a 106-92 win over the Chicago Bulls in 2008.

The win was secured with 22 points from former UConn star Ray Allen (including 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range), 20 points and 4 blocks for Kevin Garnett, and 17 points from Paul Pierce.

“The 3-point line can be very tricky at times,” Allen opined via the Associated Press.

“You have so many open looks, and I know I’m capable of making them. Paul knows he’s capable of making them, but I think there’s a stigma attached when you shoot too many threes — you’re settling.”

Boston also squeaked by the Charlotte then-Bobcats 111-109 a year later in 2009 as a late 3-pointer from Allen stole the victory on the Celtics’ home court.

“I really didn’t expect [Gerald] Wallace to leave me,” said Allen courtesy of the Associated Press. “Paul just had the wherewithal to get it to me. He was driving to maybe put us ahead one.”

Pierce however powered Boston to this win with 32 points to Allen’s 22, and point guard Rajon Rondo had 21 points and 9 assists.

In 2012, the Celtics blew out the Miami Heat 91-72, with Rondo’s triple double setting the tone.

The Kentucky product would score 16 points, 14 assists and 11 boards in the win while the team held a LeBron James-led heat to just 34.8 % shooting from the floor.

Three years later in 2015, Boston beat the Indiana Pacers 100-87, with reserve center Kelly Olynyk scoring 19 points despite a black eye and several stitched in his face after teammate Shavlik Randolph had elbowed him in the face before the game.

“It was more of a vision thing; how well could he see?” posited head coach Brad Stevens via the AP. “He was saying he could see pretty well and the doctors felt pretty good about him playing … I think it looked a little worse than it felt.”

Center Tyler Zeller also had 19 points, and wing Evan Turner added 13 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds in the victory.

It is the anniversary of the Celtics’ 109-106 win over the juggernaut Golden State Warriors in 2016 that saw Boston snap the Dubs’ 54-game winning streak on their own court.

Point guard Isaiah Thomas made a layup with less than 9 seconds remaining to put the Celtics up 3, and the Warrior’s Stephen Curry missed a potential game-tying trey as time expired.

IT would score 22 points, Turner 21 and 5 assists, and center Jared Sullinger 20 points and 12 boards in the win.

Finally, it a year to the day of another win over the Heat — this time a 110-105 victory powered by 25 points from point guard Kyrie Irving.

It was Dwyane Wade’s last game in TD Garden, spoiled with the help of big man Al Horford, who added 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Still, Boston fans were gracious to their longtime foe, granting the Heat lifer a standing ovation at the end of the game.

“We’ve had so many battles in the playoffs, but appreciate the respect they’ve shown me as a player to give me the plaque and send me away with a piece of the history of the Celtics,” Wade said via the Associated Press. “That was so cool, and I didn’t expect it at all.”

Finally, Boston had a 110-99 win over the Toronto Raptors today in 2018 after a big game from Marcus Morris (he had yet to become a Sr.).

In 2008 on this date, Boston limited the Miami Heat to a mere 17 field goals in an 88-62 blowout. This is the the lowest number of field goals in any NBA game since the introduction of the shot clock in 1954.

It is also the date of three Boston victories since the season of their last championship in 2007-08.

The first was the aforementioned 88-62 blowout of Miami in 2008, and post-game, Paul Pierce did not hold back with his criticism of the team the Heat fielded that season.

“Man, I am going to tell you the truth,” he began (via the Associated Press). “They got D-Leaguers out there, so I think we just handled our business,” said Pierce, referring to the NBA’s developmental league before it changed its name to the G League.

“We’re supposed to do that. We knew this was a game we were supposed to win, and we just focused from the jump and went out and did it.”

It is also the date Boston blew out the Minnesota Timberwolves 100-79, with then-35-year-old Garnett putting up a 24-point, 10-rebound performance to defeat his former team.

“I think KG took it personal tonight,” Minnesota’s Anthony Tolliver said courtesy of the Associated Press. “I’m sure he’s been hearing a lot of stuff about Kevin Love being the best power forward in the league.”

Finally, on this day in in 2015, the Celtics won a hard fought game against then-Charlotte point guard Kemba Walker’s Hornets.

The Massachusetts franchise won 116-104 despite 28 points and 12 assists from the UConn product, who mounted an intense assault in the final frame that ultimately fell short.

Despite the Louisiana native’s historic performance, the Celtics lost the game to the Hawks 113-103, but Boston would go on to win the series with outstanding play from Russell and point guard Bob Cousy.

Earlier in that season, the USF product would set the regular-season record for rebounds as well, ripping down 51 against the Syracuse Nationals on February 5th.

That record would stand less than a year, as rival big man Wilt Chamberlain of the then-Philadelphia Warriors would grab 55 boards (and 34 points) in a loss to — of all teams — the Celtics on November 24th of the same year.

It is also the anniversary of three wins since the season of Boston’s last championship in 2007-08.

The first of the three is a 103-84 blowout over the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2009 that saw reserve center Glen Davis come alive with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Big Baby would get as many stitches in the third quarter after being elbowed in the head, but returned to add 15 of his 19 points afterwards.

The next was a 118-107 win over the Atlanta Hawks in 2013 powered by a Pierce triple-double. The Truth logged 20 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds to secure the win, and forward Jeff Green added 27 points.

Former Boston point guard Chris Corchiani was also born on this day in 1968, a product of NC State.

A win over the then-Charlotte Bobcats in 2012 also fell on this date, Boston taking it 102-95 with a 36-point, 10-rebound night from Pierce, who’d been carrying more of the scoring burden with UConn product Allen out injured.

The then-20-year-old guard joined an elite group of players who have scored at least 70 points in game, including Elvin Hayes, Wilt Chamberlain, David Thompson, David Robinson and Kobe Bryant.

It wasn’t enough for the Kentucky product to have a historic night for his Suns, though — the Celtics managed to weather the offensive eruption from Booker, the most points ever scored by a player on Boston.

“This doesn’t happen very often especially against a really good defensive team like the Boston Celtics,” Booker said at the time (via the Associated Press). “It’s a zone. It’s kind of hard to explain. I’ve been in those zones before, but never to this extent.”

The Celtics won with what would normally be a huge game from Isaiah Thomas, who had 34 points and 7 assists, and 15, 10 rebounds and 6 assists from forward Al Horford.

Forward Jae Crowder also added 13 points and 10 boards, and wing Gerald Green added 15 points off the bench.

Missing March Madness: third time’s the charm for Edwards

Boston Celtics rookie guards Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters both found success in the NCAA Tournament on this date.

While we may be without NCAA and NBA basketball, we have plenty to look back on for the Boston Celtics in their time in the Big Dance.

And in our ongoing series commemorating those contests on their anniversaries has four games by two current Celtics to consider.

LSU product Tremont Waters and former Boilermaker Carsen Edwards have some serious postseason history at the amateur level on this date — especially the Purdue guard, who saw his collegiate team drop two NCAA Tournament games on Mar. 23, then win the third last year.

We’ll start with the former Tigers floor general, however, as his LSU team won their 2019 matchup with Maryland to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

Louisiana State snuck by the Terrapins 69-67 with a 12-point, 5-assist outing from the Connecticut native.

Today was a rough day for the first two go-rounds for Edwards, though — the first loss coming against Kansas in 2017.

The Jayhawks prevailed handily, winning 98-66, with the then-reserve Texan scoring 6 points and 3 boards in the Sweet Sixteen loss.

The following year, the Boilermakers fell in the Sweet Sixteen again, this time to Texas Tech, and a bit less of a shellacking at 78-65.

It wasn’t for lack of effort on Edward’s part, as the Atascocita native put up 30 points on 11-of-20 shooting and 7-of-11 from deep.

The sharpshooting future Celtic finally had his breakthrough moment against Villanova in 2019, his Boilermakers coming away with an 87-61 blowout in the round of 32.

Edwards would log an incredible, 42-point, 6-rebound night that saw him hit 57.1 overall and 9-of-16 3-point attempts to send the defending national champions home.

Five games from the 2019-20 season to rewatch on League Pass

With the NBA making League Pass free to rewatch games, we assembled a list of the best games of the Boston Celtics’ 2019-20 season for you.

While we may yet have more regular season games in the 2019-20 NBA season coming this summer if the league can find a way to re-start the season derailed by the coronavirus pandemic, for now, we’re all stuck without live basketball to watch.

The NBA has been gracious enough to give us free access to League Pass to watch old games while the suspension of games continues, giving fans the next-best thing to live-action contests to watch.

So, with that in mind, the Celtics Wire took a look back to highlight some of our favorite games of the 2019-20 NBA season as suggestions to take in again while we wait and hope for the best.

We’ve assembled five games in particular that stand out to us as especially worth re-watching (or, for some of is, seeing for the first time), so let’s dive in and see what stands out, moving through the season in calendar order.
