Saints suffer another wide receiver injury vs. Panthers

The Saints suffered another wide receiver injury vs. Panthers. Cedrick Wilson Jr. (shoulder) was questionable to return at halftime:

Just moments after wide receiver Chris Olave was taken off the field for a concussion, the New Orleans Saints are now  potentially down yet another one. Wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. was announced as questionable to return with a shoulder injury, which he sustained on an 18-yard completion from Derek Carr.

The team came into this game already down receivers Rashid Shaheed and Bub Means as they’ve been placed on injured reserve. Now with Olave out and Wilson Jr. potentially out as well, the team was left with Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Mason Tipton and Jermaine Jackson at the position.

Stay tuned for updates on Wilson Jr.’s status for the remainder for the game.

After series of injuries, Saints bring back a familiar face at wide receiver

The New Orleans Saints re-signed Marquez Callaway amid a series of injuries at wide receiver. He’s back for his third stint with the team:

The New Orleans Saints announced a couple of roster moves on Thursday, most notably that they had re-signed Marquez Callaway. His return comes amid a series of injuries at wide receiver. Veteran wideouts Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Equanimeous St. Brown as well as rookie draft pick Bub Means missed Wednesday’s practice after getting banged up. The Saints needed to restock.

And so Callaway is back for his third stint with the team, his first try in Klint Kubiak’s offense. The Saints chose to let him reach free agency after his practice squad contract expired back in January, and he initially signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they let him go on Tuesday.

Callaway first joined the Saints as a rookie free agent out of Tennessee, helping out in the return game and playing a bit part on offense in 2020. He broke out with 46 catches for 698 yards in 2021, scoring six touchdown receptions, but he hasn’t returned to those heights. In the meantime he’s followed Sean Payton to the Denver Broncos and tried out in Pittsburgh (as well as with the Las Vegas Raiders last summer).

The Saints also waived backup tight end Tommy Hudson with an injury designation to make room for Callaway. He’s likely headed for injured reserve should he clear waivers. Juwan Johnson, the starter, is still on the physically unable to perform list leaving Foster Moreau and Dallin Holker to handle most of the snaps in passing drills.

Chris Olave exits Saints training camp practice after awkward landing

Chris Olave exited Tuesday’s New Orleans Saints training camp practice after landing awkwardly on his hip, says Dennis Allen:

This is worth monitoring. Chris Olave exited Tuesday’s New Orleans Saints training camp practice early so he could be evaluated in the sideline medical tent.

Olave fell awkwardly at practice but was able to leave the field under his own power. He was seen walking slowly but without a limp, and ESPN’s Katherine Terrell noted quarterback Derek Carr running over to check on Olave as he left the field. Head coach Dennis Allen was short on details after practice.

“I think he just landed on his hip,” Allen told reporters after practice. “But I really, ‘it’s hip’ and that’s really about all I’ve got right now.”

So we’ll know more once the training staff has had time to fully evaluate Olave’s condition and share word with Allen, unless it’s reported sooner. The team’s leading receiver in each of the last two seasons would obviously be a big loss. This doesn’t appear to be too serious, initially, but we’ll keep you posted. It does go to show how fragile the depth chart might be at wide receiver. Olave and Cedrick Wilson Jr. are the only wideouts on the roster with more than 100 career receptions in the NFL.

Willie Gay has already changed his New Orleans Saints jersey number

Willie Gay has already changed his New Orleans Saints jersey number. He’s going back to the same number he wore in college at Mississippi State:

It only took a week for Willie Gay to go through two different jersey numbers. The New Orleans Saints initially listed their newest linebacker in the same No. 50 he wore with the Kansas City Chiefs — but he’s now slotted into No. 6, which is the jersey number he used in college at Mississippi State. It ties in well with Gay reuniting with so many familiar faces from his college days, like teammates Johnathan Abram and J.T. Gray, as well as his old defensive coordinator Todd Grantham (the current defensive line coach for New Orleans).

The number only became available when the Saints released safety Marcus Maye at the start of the new league year last Wednesday, the same day Gay’s signing was announced. Before the NFL relaxed its rules for jersey numbers in 2021, just seven players had used No. 6 in Saints history, all specialists (most notably punters Thomas Morstead from 2009-2020 and Tommy Barnhardt from 1987-1999).

Now, it’s in high demand. But Gay isn’t the only Saints free agent pickup to have chosen his new jersey number. Backup quarterback Nathan Peterman is using No. 10, which is new for him; he wore No. 14 with the Chicago Bears  last year but opted for a different number in New Orleans. But veteran wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. is using the same No. 11 jersey he wore for the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys. No word yet on which number defensive end Chase Young is going to wear, though.
