Celtics champ Cedric Maxwell opens up about the hardest player he ever guarded

And before you ask, no — it wasn’t Larry Bird.

With the dog days of the 2022 offseason upon us, many fans of the Boston Celtics are taking a trip down memory lane to fill the void of NBA basketball in our lives until late September arrives with some preseason fare for us to sink our teeth into.

Such is the case with Celtics champion and broadcaster Cedric Maxwell, who chopped it up on his eponymous podcast with co-host Josue Pavon about all manner of things on a recent episode featuring mailbag questions for Cornbread (as Maxwell is sometimes called for a nickname). One of those questions asked Max who the hardest player he ever had to guard was in his time as a player.

You will have to watch the CLNS Media “Cedric Maxwell” podcast episode embedded below to get the answer to that (and several other questions).

But it’s not like there’s a game on tonight, so get to clicking on “play” if you’ve read this far.

For Boston’s Cedric Maxwell, Celtics icon Bill Russell is the greatest winner in history

Cornbread opened up about how his life intersected with the NBA great.

From one champion to another, Boston Celtics alumnus and broadcaster Cedric Maxwell wants us all to know that he believes Celtics Hall of Famer and civil rights fighter Bill Russell is the greatest winner in the history of North American sports. A former Celtics Finals MVP and champion in his own right as well as a host of a major Boston Celtics radio network, Maxwell had plenty of things to say about the remarkable life of his friend and hero after news broke of his passing this past Sunday.

Cornbread opened up about how his life intersected with the NBA great, sharing anecdotes of Russell’s life and how it intersected with his own in their respective times in Boston.

Maxwell joined the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast to talk about the passing of the legend, sharing stories about their time in Boston, and what we need to do to honor Russell correctly with hosts Evan Valenti and Adam Kaufman.

Celtics champ Cedric Maxwell reacts to passing of friend, hero Bill Russell

Russell maintained ties to many around the league decades after leaving it as a player and a coach.

For many in the NBA community, Boston Celtics Hall of Fame big man Bill Russell was more than just a sports hero and civil rights legend. Active in the league’s wider community for decades after leaving the game as a player and a coach, Russell maintained close ties to many players and other figures around the league as a mentor and a friend.

One such figure is fellow Celtics alumnus and Boston champion Cedric Maxwell, who shared his thoughts on his friend’s passing in a short clip he circulated on CLNS Media this past Sunday afternoon on learning of Russell’s death.

Watch the clip embedded below to hear what one Celtics legend had to say about another, and just how important Russell’s legacy is to us all as not only the greatest winner in sports history but among the most indefatigable fighters for justice of the last century.

Is the Celtics’ season a success for making the Finals, or a failure given how close they got to winning it all?

Glass half full or empty, Boston style.

Should the Boston Celtics’ 2021-22 season be considered a success for making the 2022 NBA Finals — or a failure given how close they got to winning it all before dropping the series near the finish line? After starting things out with Boston struggling to even be a .500 team, it seems a bit absurd to call the deepest run any Celtics squad has since 2010 a failure.

And yet the inability to close out the series against an aging (if still very good) Golden State Warriors squad with a title that was so close you could nearly touch it feels like the sort of disappointment that will linger for years if not decades to fans and the players competing for it.

Which lens should we be using to assess such a wild ride of a season so soon after it has ended that the dust has not yet quite settled?

NBC Sports Boston’s Trenni Kusnierek was recently joined on air by Celtics champ and broadcaster Cedric Maxwell along with Stadium’s Jeff Goodman to sort out exactly this question.

Check out the video embedded above to hear their takes on a season to remember with an end we might be better off forgetting.

More on this storyline

Whether you want to call it a dynasty or not…when you talk about the Warriors, a lot of people like to go back to the Lakers and their three-peat in the early 2000s, and obviously the Bulls and their six titles. Do you think the Spurs get underlooked in that conversation? Tony Parker: “To a certain extent. But in the world of basketball, everybody knows we had an unbelievable run, maybe one of the best runs in 20 years in the NBA, if you look at playoffs and all that kind of stuff and all the success we had over the years. I understand that we talk about the Bulls, Lakers, Celtics, Warriors — it doesn’t bother me because when I go home, I have my four rings too. So, I will put them against anybody.” -via For The Win / June 8, 2022
As for Stephen Curry, whom Tatum is playing against in the NBA Finals right now, Tracy McGrady seems to think his legacy would be helped quite a bit if he wins another ring given the circumstances of his other three titles. “That’s a tough question,” McGrady said when asked where Curry ranks all-time. “Because he has his career individually and with what he’s accomplished with his team is tough. Because you’ve gotta think, he won a championship, right, against LeBron [James] that didn’t have Kyrie [Irving], that didn’t have Kevin Love. He didn’t win the [Finals] MVP, right? Then he loses a 3-1 lead to LeBron, gets K.D., K.D. comes and wins two championships, so that gives Steph three championship but K.D. wins the two MVPs, right? -via NBC Sports / June 8, 2022
“We know Steph is like the 3-point God. But when it comes to putting him with [Michael Jordan] and these guys that won that level of championships; Kobe [Bryant] and Magic Johnson, I don’t know where to rank him. I know he’s pretty high. But I think those guys are in a different class than Steph Curry based off of [all of that]. They’re on championship teams. K.D. came and joined the Warriors and became the best player and helped Steph win two more championships. But Steph wasn’t the best player on that team.” -via NBC Sports / June 8, 2022

Celtics legend Robert Parish says Dubs’ Draymond Green a ‘fingernail away’ from letting his teammates down with his antics

A suspension by Green under similar circumstances might have cost his team the 2016 title by Green’s own admission.

In a month full of old school vs. new school NBA culture wars, Ye Olde Argument on Physicality reared its familiar head into the discourse of the 2022 NBA Finals series unfolding between the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors as a result of Dubs star forward Draymond Green’s envelope-pushing antics.

Namely, Green’s hyper-aggressive on-court play coupled with his open admission of his awareness of how he is officiated evoked a response from Celtics alumnus and broadcaster Cedric Maxwell regarding what was called a ‘corrective altercation‘ by some euphemistically that he might have encountered in the 1980s.

That in turn was answered by former Maxwell teammate and fellow Celtics champion Robert Parish, whose sage message is likely betting less attention than his recounting of a frustrating moment with Detroit Pistons enforcer Bill Laimbeer.

Draymond Green reacts to Celtics alum Cedric Maxwell suggesting he’d get KO’d for Game 2 antics in 1980s

‘Y’all were getting bullied,’ suggested the Warriors forward.

Folks around the NBA took notice of the pugnacious play from Golden State Warriors‘ Draymond Green in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. He confused the refs, he confounded fans in Boston, and he evidently got under the skin of some of the Boston Celtics’ players. Mission accomplished for Green,

The older guard made note of his aggressive disposition, as well. Celtics Hall of Famer Cedric Maxwell notably suggested that if Green played that same way back in the 80s, well, there would be a price to pay. Being physical and talking trash was all well and good, Maxwell suggested to fellow NBA legend Gary Payton, but it could lead to a corrective altercation of sorts.

Green was asked about Cornbread’s comments on Tuesday, and Draymond didn’t quite agree with the Celtics champion.

Celtics champ Cedric Maxwell says Draymond Green’s play in Game 2 would have gotten him ‘knocked the (expletive) out’ in the 1980s

The Celtics champ had some sizzling takes in a post-Game 2 conversation with Gary Payton, Sr.

“The difference was that they just got into them,” said Gary Payton Sr. of the Dubs and what caused such radically different outcomes between Games 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals series between the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors after Game 2. “They got into them and made them make turnovers.”

Celtics broadcaster and alumnus Cedric Maxwell felt the need to answer Payton — whose son Gary II helped force some of those turnovers — regarding Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green’s controversial play in Game 2. “Let me just say this to you, and I am going to be as clear as I can,” said Maxwell. “That (expletive) Draymond was doing? During the 1980s, he’d (have) got knocked the (expletive) out.”

Both Payton and Maxwell weighed in on the Warriors’ Game 2 win after the dust had settled at Chase Center Sunday — check out the clip embedded below to hear more of what they had to say about the series-tying victory for the Dubs.
