Iowa jumps Wisconsin in CBS Sports college football re-rank after Week 9

Wisconsin saw its three-game winning streak and red-hot momentum come to an end in Week 9, as it fell to No. 3 Penn State 28-13.

The Badgers are now 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in Big Ten play entering a critical Week 10 rivalry game at Iowa.

Wisconsin and Iowa are tough to separate through eight games of action. Each boasts the same conference and overall record, and the two rank similarly in most ranking systems and metrics.

Iowa has a slight edge over Wisconsin, as its resume is boosted by blowout wins over both Minnesota and Washington. Wisconsin has three dominant conference victories, but it has yet to beat any team ranked in the top 60 in ESPN FPI.

CBS Sports latest college football re-rank reflects that current standing. It dropped Wisconsin to No. 38 overall after its Week 9 loss to Penn State, while Iowa rose to No. 36 after its big win over Northwestern — jumping Wisconsin in the process.

Wisconsin and Iowa appear to be evenly-matched entering Saturday’s primetime matchup at Kinnick Stadium. The Badgers enter as slight underdogs, a standing that CBS Sports accurately reflects in its latest full-sport ranking.

Chargers rise in NFL power rankings after Week 8 win over Saints

Find out where the Chargers stand in the national eye after Week 8

The Chargers got back over .500 after defeating the Saints last Sunday.

After Week 8, let’s see where Los Angeles stands in NFL power rankings:

USA Today: 18 (Previous: 19)

“They’re getting nice returns from their rookie class. Per Next Gen Stats, RT Joe Alt didn’t concede one pressure on 38 pass-blocking plays Sunday, tied for the best showing by a rook in the past three seasons. Meanwhile WR Ladd McConkey’s six-catch, 111-yard, two-TD game might have cemented him as QB Justin Herbert’s primary target for years to come. McConkey’s 100-yard day was the first by a Bolts rookie in 11 years.”

NFL: 15 (Previous: 17)

“The Chargers offense remains a work in progress. It broke an eight-quarter TD-less streak and the wide receivers finally broke out, with Ladd McConkey catching two second-half scoring passes. Oh, and it was their fifth turnover-free game this season. But there were too many pass-protection breakdowns to call it a good day offensively, even while scoring a season-high 26 points. Justin Herbert was sacked three times and hit four more, with every starting lineman other than rookie Joe Alt allowing multiple pressures. Herbert also escaped a few would-be sacks, turning one into a career-best 38-yard scramble, but he needs better protection. The eight points the Chargers’ defense allowed Sunday were their second-fewest on the season, and c’s unit has yet to give up more than 20, so this one fit the theme of previous victories. Right now, keeping Herbert healthy feels like the most overwhelming concern.”

ESPN: 17 (Previous: 18)

Best offseason addition: Running back J.K. Dobbins

“After the Chargers’ win over the Saints, coach Jim Harbaugh used his news conference to campaign for Dobbins as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. “If I am the first to nominate him, then so be it,” Harbaugh said. After an Achilles tear ended Dobbins’ season in Week 1 last year, he has been one of the league’s best running backs. He is sixth in the NFL in rushing yards per game (76.4) and is tied for sixth in rushes of 10-plus yards (14).”

CBS Sports: 16 (Previous: 20)

“At 4-3, the defense has really come up big for this group. The good thing about the offense is Justin Herbert is starting to throw it around more.”

Sports Illustrated: 13 (Previous: 19)

“The Chargers’ post-Brandon Staley identity was certainly not one I would have predicted. Sans Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, the stars of this team are the drone-like Ladd McConkey and the absolutely horrifying 300-pound fullback, Scott Matlock. Staley knew this team had to be tougher but struggled to find the right fits for these pieces. The Chargers are not perfect but they’re starting to make some sense. This week’s Browns matchup, with the surging Broncos also facing a difficult test, is quietly fascinating.”

Bleacher Report: 15 (Previous: 20)

“The Chargers offense is a different animal when it can actually stretch the field with wide receivers. They were able to do that with a healthy McConkey on Sunday, and I expect to see continued offensive growth once Quentin Johnston (ankle) returns to the lineup. If head coach Jim Harbaugh can marry even an average offense to the league’s top-ranked scoring defense, Los Angeles should be relevant over the second half of the season.”

“However, I still believe L.A. is a year away from being a contender. The closest thing the Chargers have to a quality win has come against the Broncos—and the jury is still very much out on Denver. Still, the Chargers might not need to be great to slip into the postseason. They’ll have a chance to pad their record with upcoming games against the Browns, Titans and Bengals.”

Duke football to face defending national champions in CBS Sports bowl projections

With the college football season entering the final stretch, the CBS Sports bowl projections include an interesting matchup for Duke.

As the college football season continues on, fans get closer and closer to bowl season. As a result, CBS Sports analyst Jerry Palm updated his 2024 bowl predictions once again on Sunday.

Palm put the Blue Devils in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines, last year’s national champions. The game would take place in Charlotte, North Carolina, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time on January 3.

The Wolverines, now led by former offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore, are off to a 5-3 start in their title defense with losses to the Texas Longhorns, Illinois Fighting Illini, and Washington Huskies. Michigan will play the Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Indiana Hoosiers before the end of the season.

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl saw the West Virginia Mountaineers bully the North Carolina Tar Heels for a 30-10 victory last year. Duke beat the Troy Trojans in the Birmingham Bowl, securing the Blue Devils’ fifth postseason win in a row.

If this matchup came to fruition, Duke would have the advantage at quarterback. Michigan has struggled all season to find someone who can replace 2023 starter JJ McCarthy, and three different Wolverines have thrown at least 40 passes.

Additionally, Duke’s defense would match up well against the struggling aerial attack after allowing 5.4 yards per pass attempt through Week 9, the fifth-best mark in the FBS.

Florida hangs tight in CBS Sports re-rank following Week 9 bye

Florida is still a top-50 team in CBS Sports’ Week 9 re-ranked… but barely.

College football’s Week 9 once again saw some exciting efforts out on the field, particularly in the Southeastern Conference where the battle for the league crown as well as a berth in the playoffs rages on.

The Florida Gators, however, were not in action as they took their second bye of the fall to prepare for the annual rivalry game in Jacksonville against the Georgia Bulldogs — who also got a breather last weekend.

Given that the Orange and Blue was idle, it makes sense that the CBS Sports re-rank penned by Chip Patterson left [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and Co. right where they were last week at No. 50. That puts Florida between the No. 49 Liberty Flames and No. 51 Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Meanwhile, most of the nation was out on the gridiron grind, which resulted in a few changes among the top 10 teams.

CBS Sports re-rank top 10

The Oregon Ducks remain perched at No. 1 this week while Georgia moved up two spots to No. 2, followed by the Penn State Nittany Lions who held tight at No. 3, the Ohio State Buckeyes who fell two spots to No. 4, and the Miami Hurricanes who stayed onto the No. 5 spot.

The Texas Longhorns and Indiana Hoosiers remain at Nos. 6 and 7, respectively, while the Iowa State Cyclones and BYU Cougars both moved up a spot to Nos. 8 and 9, respectively; the Clemson Tigers fell two spots to No. 10.

Coming up for the Gators

Florida and Georgia face off for a Week 10 rivalry battle in Jacksonville on Saturday, Nov. 2 with kickoff slated for 3:30 p.m. ET. The pregame festivities will be featured on SEC Nation and the game will be broadcast on ABC.

Florida’s star combo guard among top 25 college hoops players this year

Walter Clayton Jr. is among the best college basketball players in the country this season. Can he lead Florida to the promised land?

Florida basketball is less than two weeks away from the opening tipoff of the 2024-25 campaign and the third year of the [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] era is surrounded by excitement unseen in Gainesville since the 2019 preseason. A big reason for that is the return of one of the team’s most important players from last season.

Combo guard [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. proved to be a crucial cog in Golden’s grand design for the Gators last year. His efforts led to a 24-12 final record including an 11-7 mark in SEC play and an appearance in the conference tournament semifinals.

Clayton had tested the NBA draft waters during the spring, but announced his return to the O’Connell Center in late May, marking the final piece of the program’s offseason tasks.

It should come as no surprise, then, that CBS Sports writer Cameron Salerno included the former transfer among his top 100 and one best players entering the 2024-25 season, ranking Clayton at No. 21 overall.

“The former Iona standout will play his second season at Florida after averaging a team-high 17.6 ppg last season,” Salerno begins. “Clayton’s most notable performance came in the NCAA Tournament, where he dropped 33 points in a loss to Colorado.”

While the Orange and Blue have seen a bit of roster turnover, the path is wide open for him to make his mark his senior year.

“With fellow guard Zyon Pullin off to the NBA, he should once again finish as Florida’s leading scorer and challenge for a spot on the All-America team.”

Florida basketball season opener

The Gators will face the South Florida Bulls in the Jacksonville Sports Foundation Invitational to open the schedule on Monday, Nov. 4 in Jacksonville. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network and can be heard on the Gators Sports Network.

Wisconsin surges in CBS Sports college football re-rank after Week 8

Wisconsin surges in CBS Sports college football re-rank after Week 8

Wisconsin football is on a steep rise after three consecutive decisive victories.

The team has improved to 5-2 (3-1 Big Ten) during a stretch in which the Badgers outscored opponents, 117-16. The team’s metrics have improved significantly. It is 25th in ESPN FPI and 20th in SP+.

The computer metrics aren’t the only thing impressed by the Badgers’ recent form. CBS Sports’ latest re-ranking of all 134 teams elevated the Badgers another 12 spots, to No. 34 in the nation.

The moves follow Wisconsin’s 23-3 win at Northwestern. It continues the team’s upward trajectory, though it remains behind Big Ten foes Nebraska (No. 31), Illinois (No. 21), Indiana (No. 7), Penn State (No. 3), Ohio State (No. 2) and Oregon (No. 1).

Wisconsin has upcoming games against Penn State, Iowa (No. 40), Nebraska, Oregon and Minnesota (No. 47). A continuation of form should see a continued rise in CBS’ rankings, especially if that form leads to an upset victory over top-ranked Penn State on Saturday.

The Badgers and Nittany Lions will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET, 6:30 p.m. CT on NBC and streaming on Peacock. It profiles as arguably the biggest game of the Luke Fickell era to date.

CBS to broadcast Notre Dame-North Carolina men’s basketball game

A sign that the Irish are drawing interest.

The Notre Dame men’s basketball team is on the verge of something special. It won’t happen this year, but it likely will when the Irish’s top-ranked 2025 recruiting class comes in. Until then, there’s interest in where the Irish currently stand.

To that end, CBS Sports unveiled its regular-season schedule for its longstanding college basketball coverage, and the Irish will be part of it. Specifically, they will help tip off a tripleheader of games for CBS on Jan. 4 when they welcome North Carolina to Purcell Pavilion.

This will be the first time the Irish have played on CBS since they picked up a 64-63 road victory over Kentucky on Dec. 12, 2020. It didn’t broadcast any of the three games the Irish played during their last NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022.

The last time the network broadcast a game from South Bend was an 82-55 loss to Virginia on Jan. 26, 2019. The Cavaliers went on to win that year’s national championship:

Here’s hoping the Irish will rise to the occasion of getting national exposure on college basketball’s most prestigious broadcast coverage.

Chargers take a dip in NFL power rankings after Week 7 loss to Cardinals

Find out where the Chargers stand in the national eye after Week 7

The Chargers fumbled the game away on Monday night, falling short to the Cardinals.

After Week 7, let’s see where Los Angeles stands in NFL power rankings:

USA Today: 19 (Previous: 17)

“You could say a lot of things about the Bolts over the years, but rarely that they were boring. Welp. HC Jim Harbaugh’s Big Ten approach probably further lowers this team’s already limited ceiling.”

NFL: 17 (Previous: 15)

“This one is going to sting. Jim Harbaugh was irate with a pair of late officiating decisions — a non-call while his offense had the ball and an unnecessary roughness on his defense — but the Chargers really lost Monday’s game at Arizona by failing to finish drives. Los Angeles bled off more than eight minutes on its final march, but ultimately had to settle for Cameron Dicker’s fifth field goal of the night to go up, 15-14. On the Cardinals’ ensuing drive, the 15-yard flag on Cam Hart hurt, but giving up a 33-yard catch-and-run to James Conner on the very next play was what truly allowed Arizona to score the final three points and nab a 17-15 win. Justin Herbert passed for a season-high 349 yards and made some pretty throws — some caught, some not — when he wasn’t under heavy pressure. L.A.’s lack of offensive weaponry right now is glaring, especially with the run game stalling out. The Chargers crossed midfield seven times, but ran just one play inside Arizona’s 10-yard line. The schedule lightens in the coming weeks, but this loss is going to stick in Harbaugh’s craw for a while.”

ESPN: 18 (Previous: 17)

Young riser: FB/DT Scott Matlock

“As a rookie defensive tackle last season, Matlock played primarily on special teams. He was expected to have an increased role on the interior defensive line this season, but coach Jim Harbaugh switched Matlock to fullback and he has been an essential part of the Chargers’ rushing game. Matlock, 24, still plays defense and special teams; his 236 snaps are the 11th most on the team. He’s emerging as an unlikely but crucial part of one of the NFL’s best rushing offenses. ”

CBS Sports: 20 (Previous: 14)

“They are limited on offense with the injuries at receiver, and it showed up in the loss to the Cardinals. They need to get bodies back. The defense let them down late in that loss.”

Sports Illustrated: 19 (Previous: 15)

“Too low? I was impressed with the team’s ability to grind out an eight-plus minute drive to take the lead late in Monday night’s loss to the Cardinals, but Jim Harbaugh is going to have the time and space to build out his weapon set here in Los Angeles … and he’s going to need it. Will Dissly led the way tonight in receiving for the Chargers.”

Bleacher Report: 20 (Previous: 16)

“This is the sort of loss that comes back to haunt a franchise late in the season—the sort of defeat that can be the difference between a Wild Card spot and watching the postseason on TV. The Chargers outplayed the Cardinals in some respects. But the run game never got going, and Los Angeles only reached the red-zone once and settled for a field goal then. The argument can be made that Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers got out-toughed Monday night—and that’s a bad look for a squad that has hung its hat on physicality over the first month-plus of the season.”
