The No. 59 jersey has given the Bucs some underrated LBs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a handful of underrated linebackers wear the No. 59 jersey over the years

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had some legendary linebackers over the years, from the early days of Richard “Batman” Wood, to Hardy Nickerson and Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks, to the modern marvel that is Lavonte David.

But they’ve also had some underrated players at the position, and a few of them all wore the No. 59 jersey.

Mason Foster, Jamie Duncan and Cato June all made their mark during their respective tenures in Tampa Bay, making some big plays along the way.

To celebrate 59 days until the Bucs’ regular-season opener, check out these awesome highlight reels of all three players, courtesy of Liam Mitchell (Bucs Vault):

Colts’ Cato June coaching LBs, EDGE at Senior Bowl

Cato June will represent the Colts as a coach at the Senior Bowl.

Indianapolis Colts assistant linebackers coach Cato June will represent the team at the Senior Bowl as he was selected to coach the linebackers and edge rushers at the 2024 Senior Bowl.

June will be joined by Las Vegas Raiders defensive line coach Rob Leonard as the coaches for the American linebackers and edge rushers down in Mobile, AL., next week for one of the biggest draft events of the offseason.

June was a Senior Bowl product himself ahead of the 2003 NFL draft coming out of Michigan. This was right before the Colts selected him in the sixth round of the draft and the place he would call home for the first four years of his NFL career.

June will get an up-close look at the linebackers even though it’s not a massive need for the Colts. They’re always looking to add depth to the room in the middle rounds of the draft, and this year’s class won’t be any different.

The Senior Bowl practices begin next week, and the event will be capped with the game Saturday, Feb. 3, at the University of South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium. It will air at 1:00 p.m. ET on NFL Network.

Colts’ assistant coach tracker: Who’s joining Gus Bradley’s staff

Tracking all of the Colts’ assistant coaching hires under new DC Gus Bradley.

The Indianapolis Colts already announced the hiring of new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, who is replacing former coordinator Matt Eberflus after he became the new head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Bradley’s first task is to assemble an entirely new defensive coaching staff. Only one assistant coach remains from Eberflus’ old staff: assistant defensive line coach Matt Raich. It isn’t clear if he’ll be retained under the new regime.

Here’s a list of Bradley’s coaching staff. Some of these are unofficial and as we learned with Josh McDaniels, nothing is official until the Colts announce it as so.

We’ll keep updating this as hirings are announced or reported:

Report: Colts to hire former LB Cato June to coaching staff

The Colts have reportedly hired Cato June as the assistant LBs coach.

The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly hiring Bowling Green’s linebackers coach and former player Cato June to the defensive coaching staff under new coordinator Gus Bradley, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.

June might be a familiar name to Colts fans. He was a sixth-round pick in the 2003 NFL draft and spent four seasons with the Colts (2003-2006). He earned a Pro Bowl nod during the 2005 while also being named to the All-Pro Second Team.

June will reportedly be the assistant linebackers coach for the Colts.

They reportedly finalized the hiring of former Raiders linebackers coach Richard Smith. So with Smith as the linebackers coach, June will be around as the assistant linebackers coach.

The Colts have yet to announce the new coaching staff under the aforementioned Bradley, but it appears the staff is beginning to come together.

Former Michigan, NFL standout joins UMass coaching staff

The former Wolverines standout is moving up in the college football coaching ranks.

[jwplayer f5qXfn1Y-XNcErKyb]

Former Michigan players have been on the move in the coaching ranks this week, taking big steps forward.

First, the move that chagrined ardent maize and blue fans, as former team captain Joe Bolden got hired as a quality control coach at rival Ohio State after moving from Washington State to USC and finally Columbus.

Then, the next day, his linebacker teammate Desmond Morgan moved up from the grad assistant ranks — he went from Wayne State to Maryland to Minnesota — to FCS program Indiana State, where he’ll have an on-field coaching role.

Quietly, former Michigan safety Cato June, who made the Pro Bowl in 2005 as a member of the Indianapolis Colts, has been making coaching moves of his own.

Since retiring from the NFL, June started in the high school ranks, coaching at Washington (DC) Anacostia, first as defensive coordinator then head coach, from 2011-14. He then transitioned to Prince George’s County (MD) Charles Herbert Flowers in 2015, which allowed him the opportunity to move to college, where he became the running backs coach for FCS program Howard for four years.

But now, June is back in the FBS-level, having accepted a position coaching outside linebackers for independent UMass.

June joins several accomplished former Wolverines coaching at the FBS level, such as Northwestern defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz, Oklahoma cornerbacks coach Roy Manning and Indiana running backs coach Mike Hart.
