46 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 46 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 46 jersey number

The New England Patriots are 46 days away from officially opening the 2023 NFL season against the Philadelphia Eagles. So we’re continuing our countdown series by listing every Patriots player that has ever worn the No. 46 jersey.

The number currently belongs to long snapper Tucker Addington, but the player most known for wearing it is none other than legendary fullback James Develin.

During a time when the fullback position was considered a dying breed, Develin helped raise it from the ashes as a Patriot. He’s a three-time Super Bowl champion and a former Pro Bowler. His contributions were truly one of a kind as a do-everything fullback.

Here’s every Patriots player, including Develin, that has worn the No. 46 throughout franchise history (via Pro Football Reference):

Titans signing former New England Patriots LB Cassh Maluia

The Titans are signing LB Cassh Maluia, a sixth-round pick of the Patriots in 2020.

The Tennessee Titans are signing a member of the New England Patriots’ 2020 draft class.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Titans will sign linebacker Cassh Maluia, a sixth-round pick of the Patriots in 2020.

Maluia (6-0, 248) played in nine games for the Patriots last season. He did not record a tackle but saw action on 10 snaps on defense and 76 on special teams.

The Patriots cut Maluia on Tuesday.

Patriots waive 3 players, including kicker Justin Rohrwasser

Justin Rohrwasser was among several Patriots waived on Tuesday.

The New England PatriotsPatriots waived several players on Tuesday, with the most prominent one being kicker Justin Rohrwasser.

Rohrwasser was drafted by the Patriots with the 159th pick in the 2020 draft. He was one of three kickers drafted in 2020. He never played a game for new England.

Rohrwasser had success at Marshall University. He made 79-of-82 field goals during his two seasons for the Thundering Herd. He made 35-of-36 extra points in 2019 and went 18-of-21 on field goals.

Linebackers Cassh Maluia and Michael Pinckney were also part of the trio waived on Tuesday.

With Nick Folk and Roberto Aguyao at the position for New England, there was not a ton of room for Rohrwasser on the roster. With Folk’s consistent performance in 2020, the Patriots were able to find consistency at kicker for the first time.

Jerod Mayo gives insight into inconsistent playing time for rookie LBs

Jerod Mayo has an explanation for a lack of rookie linebacker playing time,

In what is a year of rebuilding for the New England Patriots, there have been some questions surrounding the lack of playing time for the Patriots rookie linebackers. Earlier this week, Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo  offered some explanation as to why the rookies have not seen more playing time.

Ja’Whaun Bentley was inactive for Monday’s contest with the New York Jets. That left only Josh Uche, Anfernee Jennings, and Cassh Maluia on the 53-man roster for the game. The rookies played a little bit more in certain roles on Monday , and that could serve as a springboard. Mayo indicated that linebackers could see more playing time sooner rather than later.

“This past week, Josh had more of a third-down role for us,” ex-Patriots linebacker and current inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo said Friday. “He has great quickness to rush the passer and things like that. And then Anfernee had more of an early-down role. So, kind of splitting up those roles and really concentrating on a role instead of having those guys out there down after down after down after down, especially at this point in the season.

“So, we’re midway through the season now and hopefully those guys can take on a little bit more. But we’ll have to see.”

With the Patriots set to face a tough Baltimore Ravens team on Sunday, these rookies could figure into the equation quite a bit. With the running talents of quarterback Lamar Jackson, they could have their work cut out for them.

Patriots draft Wyoming LB Cassh Maluia in 6th round of 2020 draft

A likely special teams contributor.

The New England Patriots picked Wyoming linebacker Cassh Maluia in the sixth round at 204th overall during the 2020 NFL Draft. He’s the third linebacker in the team’s class behind Michigan outside linebacker Josh Uche and Alabama outside linebacker Anfernee Jennings. But Maluia is a different brand of linebacker, with the previous two spending most of their time edge.

Maluia spent much of his time in the middle of the formation as an inside linebacker. In his sophomore season, he logged a career-high 74 tackles. In his sophomore season, he logged a career-high 74 tackles. He also seemed natural in zone coverage in college. It’s likely he will contribute on special teams.

Maluia is the 10th pick in the Patriots’ draft class, behind Lenior-Rhyne safety Kyle Duggan (pick no. 37), Uche (No. 60), Jennings (87th overall), UCLA tight end Devin Asiasi (No. 91), Virginia Tech tight end Dalton Keene (101st overall), Marshall kicker Justin Rohrwasser (No. 159), Michael Onwenu (182nd overall) and Wake Forest guard Justin Herron (No. 195).

Instant analysis of Patriots selecting LB Cassh Maluia with the No. 204 pick

The Patriots made sure to address their hole at linebacker in the draft.

The New England Patriots tripled down on their need for a linebacker after six rounds in the 2020 NFL Draft.

New England selected Cassh Maluia from Wyoming with the No. 204 pick after selecting Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings in earlier rounds. The Patriots lost Kyle Van Noy, Jamie Collins and Elandon Roberts in free agency this offseason and only had Dont’a Hightower on the roster as a valuable starter.

Maluia is 5-foot-11, 238 pounds and didn’t head into the draft with much hype. He’s undersized and has a total of 1.5 sacks in four seasons with the Cowboys. Maluia did run a 4.53 40-yard dash and it’s very possible the Patriots bring him in to become an instant impact player on the special teams unit.

Here’s Maluia’s draft overview on NFL.com.

The quick twitch and lateral quickness can be intriguing when they pop on tape, but his inability to leverage gaps, take on blockers and play with consistent recognition of play development is problematic. Maluia has good speed, agility and short-area movement skills, but he will be a long shot to earn a roster spot unless he can become a special teams star.

Bill Belichick may just do that, and turn Maluia into a special teams star.
