WATCH: Carter Nelson scores first TD of Huskers career

Tight end Carter Nelson was able to find the end zone for the first time in his Husker career.

Nebraska football scored a touchdown on its first drive of the game against Northern Iowa. Freshman tight end Carter Nelson scored the first touchdown of his career in the process, ending an efficient drive.

The drive itself took eight plays, 75 yards, and 3:20 off the clock. It was Dylan Raiola’s fourth touchdown of the season, and it set the tone early for Nebraska football.

The pass itself was right up the seam, and Nelson was able to do the rest of the work and take it to the house. The Ainsworth star has made an impact over the last couple of weeks, and he did so again on Saturday.

It will be interesting to see how Nelson impacts the rest of Saturday’s game. Nevertheless, it’s safe to say that he should be able to find the end zone a lot more during his time in Lincoln. So far, the returns have been positive.

Huskers coach heaps praise on freshman WR Carter Nelson

Carter Nelson was the top player in the state of Nebraska for the 2024 recruiting class.

Nebraska football freshman wide receiver Carter Nelson has been impressing the coaching staff throughout preseason camp. Wide receivers coach Garret McGuire has previously talked about the energy he brought to the team. Special teams coach Ed Foley also gave him a shout-out on Tuesday as the latter met with the media.

Nelson originally came to the program as a tight end before being moved to wide receiver during camp. Now, he is working on refining the ins and outs of his game at the receiver spot. The Huskers certainly have an ample amount of depth at the wide receiver position, but Nelson’s athleticism could make things interesting as far as where he sits in the room.

Carter Nelson is a really good football player. We all know he is talented but he has a really good sense of how to play football… he’s shown me a lot of discipline and very good understanding of what we’re trying to do with special teams. He won’t do anything glamorous early on for us and to play a true freshman tells you a lot about his ability.

Nelson has enough skill and athleticism to make an immediate impact. The Huskers could risk burning his redshirt, but he has the potential to be one of the best players on the field.

Receivers coach Garrett McGuire pleased with Carter Nelson’s development

Carter Nelson was a four-star recruit in the 2024 recruiting class.

In an interview earlier this week, Nebraska wide receivers coach Garrett McGuire was complementary of newly converted wide receiver Carter Nelson.

Nelson was recruited out of high school as a tight end. Last month, the program announced that the Ainsworth native would begin his college career as a wide receiver.

The eight-man football star was a receiving threat at the high school level out of the tight end position. He recorded 32 catches for 658 yards and 14 touchdowns last year.

The Huskers currently boast a crowded tight end room for the 2024 season, including Thomas Fidone and Nate Boerkircher. Younger names, such as Ian Flynt and Eric Ingwerson, are also in the room.

In the meantime, McGuire has been pleased with Nelson’s transition to the wide receiver position, as transcribed by Husker247’s Brian Christopherson.

“In the recruiting process we got to watch him play a few times, watch him play basketball, and I didn’t really realize how explosive of an athlete he is. Obviously you see him pole vaulting … and all that stuff but, man, he is an explosive athlete. He’s dominant on the perimeter a lot like Janiran (Bonner) when it comes to blocking. But he is a competitor. He wants to compete.”

Time will tell how easily Nelson makes the transition to wide receiver. That said, there is little doubt he has athletic skills. The Huskers want to put their best athletes on the field, and Nelson certainly fits that category.

Nebraska Football Countdown to Kickoff: No. 29 WR Carter Nelson

Only 29 days remain until the start of Nebraska’s 2024 season.

The countdown to the beginning of the 2024 season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers is down to just 29 days and that brings Huskers freshman wide receiver and Ainsworth, Nebraska native Carter Nelson into the player spotlight.

Nelson was one of the crown jewels of Matt Rhule’s first full recruiting class with the Gophers, a four-star tight end across the recruiting industry. Nelson had 30+ scholarship offers coming out of Ainsworth High School, about a four and half drive from Lincoln.

Despite signing as a tight end in the 2024 recruiting cycle, the Huskers are looking to get Nelson on the field early and often in his collegiate career. At Big Ten media days in July, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule told the media that Nelson will begin his career as a wide receiver, playing most as a slot receiver.

The Huskers decision to move Nelson to a wide receiver will allow the program’s offense to have both Nelson and returning standout tight end Thomas Fidone II on the field at the same time, giving the Huskers a serious height advantage.

Nelson is expected to have a considerable impact on the field this fall and could quickly become one of the program’s bigger weapons offensively. He’ll look to form a dangerous duo alongside fellow freshman, former five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola.

Nelson, Raiola, and the Huskers will take on the UTEP Miners at Memorial Stadium on August 31.

Matt Rhule on Carter Nelson ‘he’s a difference maker’

The eight-man football star had 28 catches for 525 yards and 11 touchdowns.

One of Nebraska’s top recruits in the class of 2024 will be switching positions. Head coach Matt Rhule has confirmed that Carter Nelson will switch from tight end to wide receiver.

When discussing the position switch, Matt Rhule said that Nelson is a difference-maker, and this change will allow him to get on the field quicker. Rhule also confirmed that Nelson will primarily play in the slot.

Carter Nelson, nobody even asked me about him but I can talk about him all day. We’re playing Carter as a receiver. Our thought process was instead of making him a tight end that could split out. We thought we could start him as a receiver who could come in a block.

Rhule believes that Nelson has the ability to be a positionless player at the next level.

He fits in that Janiran Boner, like a positionless player, but it’s easier to get on the field at receiver than it is to get on the field at tight end. Because he wasn’t here in the spring, we’re going to start him at receiver. I told him when I recruited him, I said, ‘Hey, we’re going to create a special position for you,’ and I’m proud that we did that. He’s a difference-maker.

The eight-man football star had 28 catches for 525 yards and 11 touchdowns. Nelson is the first eight-man player from Nebraska to receive an offer from the Cornhuskers since 2002.

Carter Nelson and the Nebraska Cornhuskers will kick off the 2024 season on Saturday, August 31, against UTEP. The start time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Top 2024 signee Carter Nelson to start career at wide receiver

One of the Huskers top signees in the 2024 recruiting class is going to make an impact early this year, just not at his original position.

In Nebraska’s 2024 recruiting class, outside quarterback commitment Dylan Raiola, no prospect received as much hype as four-star prospect Carter Nelson.

The Ainsworth, Nebraska native was a consensus four-star prospect and ranked as a top-100 prospect by On3, 247Sports, and Rivals.

That being said, while recruited as a tight end, the Huskers will be starting the 2024 signee at a different position: wide receiver. Nelson will be playing in the slot. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule told the media on Wednesday during the Big Ten Media Days of the development.

The Huskers’ move of Nelson to the slot will allow the talented freshman to have a more consistent impact while also allowing junior tight end Thomas Fidone II to be involved in the offense.

Nelson, of course, will not be the only freshman who impacts the Huskers’ offense this fall, as former five-star prospect Dylan Raiola is expected to be the program’s starting quarterback. The Huskers, led by Raiola, will start their season on August 31 against the UTEP Miners.
