Colts’ Carson Wentz (ankles) returns to practice

Colts QB Carson Wentz returned to practice on Friday.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz returned to practice on Friday as the team prepares for the Week 3 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

After missing the first two days of practice this week, the Colts got some encouraging news with Wentz taking the starting reps as the quarterback.

Wentz suffered a sprain in both ankles During the Week 2 loss against the Rams and it was truly up on the air whether he would be able to play this week.

The final injury report will be released Friday but this bodes well for his chances to play against the Titans.

Report: Colts may rotate QBs if Carson Wentz is out

Colts may be planning to use both Jacob Eason and Brett Hundley if Carson Wentz misses.

The Indianapolis Colts are hoping that starting quarterback Carson Wentz can suit up against the Tennessee Titans, but they also have to prepare for the chance that he physically can’t play.

It seems part of that plan may be to rotate between Jacob Eason and Brett Hundley during the Week 3 game against the Titans if Wentz winds up missing, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

As Wentz continues to work his way back from the two ankle sprains he suffered against the Rams in Week 2, the Colts are preparing to be without him on Sunday while still holding out hope he can play.

Hundley has been with the team since the beginning of training camp when Wentz injured his foot but didn’t see any reps during the preseason until the final game after rookie Sam Ehlinger sprained his knee.

Head coach Frank Reich was keeping the team’s plans close to the vest when speaking to reporters on Wednesday so the Colts may be planning a rotation after all.

It’s hard to predict just what the Colts will do in Week 3, but it appears all options are on the table and it’s not a guarantee that Eason will get all of the work.

Colts’ Carson Wentz (ankle) starts week as DNP, considered day-to-day

Colts QB Carson Wentz won’t practice Wednesday and is considered day to day

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz won’t practice on Wednesday and is considered day-to-day with two ankle sprains, head coach Frank Reich told reporters Wednesday.

Indy media member noted that Wentz wasn’t wearing a boot and didn’t have a noticeable limp, which is encouraging news considering what he looked like on Sunday.

Wentz won’t practice Wednesday and the Colts will continue to monitor him throughout the week.

There’s still a chance Wentz plays against the Tennessee Titans in Week 3, but it likely depends on how much practice he gets in this week.

If Wentz does miss the game, the Colts will turn to second-year quarterback Jacob Eason.

Colts QB Carson Wentz will start Week 1 vs. Seahawks

Carson Wentz is officially getting the start for the Colts in Week 1.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz will officially get the start in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

This was expected as Wentz returned to practice in full this week. However, the formality of naming Wentz the starter is now official given what head coach Frank Reich said to the media following Friday’s practice.

Reich told reporters that the final step in the process was to get Wentz to practice in full for an entire week. He did that so he is ready to go for the opener.

“Carson (Wentz) will start. He’s been full all week. He’s looked good. I think he’s looked good and he’s ready to go,” Reich said Friday. “Yeah, that was it. It was stack three practices in a row, try to be full at every practice and then respond well the next day. We were able to get that.”

The story for Wentz has been rough to begin. First, he had to undergo surgery on his foot just a few days into training camp. After recovering for a few weeks, he returned to practice just to be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list as a close contact.

Wentz missed most of training camp and all of the preseason due to the foot injury and then missed most of last week due to being on the COVID-19 list.

For Reich, he has full confidence that Wentz knows the playbook by memory despite the lack of reps with the offense throughout the preseason.

“The good thing is – it’s fair, but we don’t have to throw anything at him. We have it narrowed down for a game plan. So, it’s whatever is on that call sheet and I’m sure he probably has it memorized by now,” Reich said. “Now it’s just a question of going over and over it and just playing it out, visualizing it in your mind, going through all the progressions, getting the ball out on time, making the right checks. Just play the position and be yourself. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, just go out there and play a good football game.”

Wentz will be the fourth quarterback to start a season-opener for the Colts since Reich took over as head coach in 2018.

And it’s now official. He’s set to make his debut wearing the horseshoe on Sunday when the Seahawks visit the Circle City.

Report: Colts’ Carson Wentz trending toward Week 1 return

There seems to be strong optimism that Colts QB Carson Wentz is trending toward a Week 1 return.

The Indianapolis Colts are still in the waiting period to determine the timeline of returns of quarterback Carson Wentz and left guard Quenton Nelson, but it seems there is strong optimism they will be ready for the regular-season opener.

Coach Frank Reich said the Colts won’t truly know the timeline for those two players’ return until about two weeks after surgery. That milestone isn’t until next week, so the Colts still likely don’t know for sure what that looks like.

However, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported that Wentz and Nelson are heading in the right direction to be ready for Week 1.

This should be taken with a grain of salt, but it could be the start of encouraging news for the Colts.

As it stands, Jacob Eason and rookie Sam Ehlinger are splitting snaps with the first-team offense to determine who will fill in for Wentz during the preseason.

Wentz was starting to look a bit more comfortable in the offense just before his foot injury, so while this is a setback in terms of his rhythm with his teammates, it would be a huge win for the team to get its starting quarterback ready for Week 1.
