Commanders QB Carson Wentz is thankful for past, excited for future

Carson Wentz looks back on his time with the Eagles in a positive light despite the difficult ending.

Carson Wentz wants this to be fun.

Wentz fielded questions from the media Wednesday regarding his being a former divisional foe wearing green.

“Obviously, a division rivalry, you know, been a part of this one for a while. Obviously, it looks a little bit different over there from when I was there. New faces, new coaches new everything, but it’ll be a fun one.”

The former Eagle quarterback was asked if any Philly memories stand out to him.

“A lot of really good memories from my time there. I’m not going to lie. A lot of great friends. A lot of great relationships that I made, you know. Definitely will have some mixed emotions in terms of those things, but nothing crazy jumps out other than my time there was a whirlwind. It was wild.”

What emotion might there be for Carson facing his former team?

“I’m excited for it just because of the nature of the game. It’s a divisional rivalry, all of those things. I’ve been a part of this one. I know the emotion that goes into it from the other side. So, I’m excited for it. But again, you know, you try not to make the game bigger than it needs to be. Every week’s a big week.”

What was it like for Wentz playing for Philadelphia fans?

“It was a lot of fun. Obviously, we had a lot of success there. Winning the Super Bowl up there was pretty special.  Being a part of that was pretty cool. It’s quite the city, quite the fan base, quite the experience. I’ll definitely cherish my time there but obviously being on the other end now it’ll look a little different.”

Once again Wentz was asked where he thought it went wrong in Philadelphia.

” I don’t know. That’s such a big question that I’ve probably answered many times. I’m thankful to be here now. I’m excited for this one.”

Rejection is difficult for each of us, so Carson is no exception when the Eagles were determined to move on from him.

“I think anytime in life you get thrown a curve ball like that, things change anytime you think, you know what life’s going to look like. Sometimes I always think God’s up there saying, ‘I’m in control.’ For me as a man of faith, I think that’s where my faith kicks in and just saying, ‘Okay, God, what do you have next for me?’

“I definitely cherished the time that I had up there. It was definitely a wild ride in many, many ways. I grew a lot as a man, got married, had a child, a lot of things. So, I’m very grateful for my time there, but it definitely does catch you off guard. Things change, and you gotta learn to grow up and change and adapt. At the end of the day, I’m thankful for it. I’m thankful for the changes that life has brought, and I’ve grown a lot from it.”

The “Washington Football Podcast” with J.P. Finlay enjoyed a conversation with Carson Wentz Tuesday.

Wentz said he was initially shocked, wondering what was going on when first hearing he was traded to Washington after only one season with the Colts.

He said shortly afterward, he heard from Commanders coach Ron Rivera and described Rivera as “fired up, excited” saying several times, “you are wanted here.” The former Eagle and Colt QB said it was freeing to know you are valued and wanted.

Finlay asked what he had learned being in three places in three seasons. Wentz replied, “The world is crazy, the NFL is a crazy league there are things outside of your control, and for me as a man of faith there is a lot of surrendering to God’s plan.”

He also talked of learning NFL careers are short, and you have to be constantly looking for ways to improve your craft, to look for ways to be the best that you absolutely can, looking for ways to put your best foot forward.

Wentz volunteered he is not a perfect husband, a perfect father, a perfect player, that he knows he needs to always be looking for ways to get better, be better. He talked of ups and downs, good and bad, times of wrestling caused him to grow in his faith. That he knows in tough times there is victory in the end, and God is still writing his story, there is a purpose and God’s plan in the midst of life’s failings and struggles.

Carson talked of how the Colts were rolling at one point last season, but he did not play well those last two games and he puts a lot of that on himself, realizing he needs to be better in those key late moments.

He talked of being willing to do all he can to come through for this team and his new teammates, but knows he will not always deliver. Yet believes what he can promise is he will always put his best foot forward intentionally seeking to play his best and be the leader this team needs.

I also volunteered that his wife is a champ and works hard at being a good mom to his two little girls.

Finlay, in summary, stated he is willing to give Wentz a clean slate in his coming to Washington and hopes he plays well for the Commanders.

Carson Wentz made his first DMV radio appearance, fielding questions from Brian Mitchell and JP Finlay of 106.7 The Fan, Thursday.

Here are some excerpts of Wentz responding to questions about the 2017 season, playing in Philly, Indianapolis, moving forward and playing at a high level for the Commanders.

CW: “It feels like an eternity ago. For me, I’m always trying to evolve my game where I can get better. There have been ups and downs along the way. I think the biggest thing for me is how can I stay available? How can I stay healthy? Just trying to be smart, play smart. Distributing the ball to the playmakers and let them do their jobs. I look forward to doing that and continuing to try to master the craft of the quarterback position.”

CW: “You grow up. I now have a wife and kids. You grow up as a man. You are always trying to learn. I think that is what this business is. Really, every business. You can never be complacent. You are always trying to grow and get better. And have people in your corner that truly want what is best for you and are willing to tell you.”

CW: “There are little things, there are big things. There is a lot of good I can continue to build upon. Just try to be the best player, best leader, best husband, father, all of those things, that I can be.”

“There have been ups and downs. It’s kinda crazy. I would have never imagined it going the way it did in Philly and then going the way the season finished in Indy and now here I am.”

“There are positives along the way. As a man and a competitor you don’t look to be traded or not wanted and all those things. But at the same time, it is an opportunity still. An opportunity to grow, put my foot forward and play the game I love.”

Commenting on this being his third team in three years, Mitchell asked Wentz if he saw this as “I have to get it right this time.”

CW: “I try my best to not let it be like that because there is enough expectation, pressure, riding on it. This is where my faith comes in. Ok, God, you have a plan, and I am just going to be the best I can be. I am confident that is good enough.”

“God willing, I will be here for a long time and have lots of success. There are a lot of things outside of my control. There are a lot of things in this game you cannot control. I will control what I can control, do my best and I think I will like the result.”
