3 Cardinals rookies make their debut vs. Seahawks

Garrett Williams, Elijah Higgins and Clayton all made their NFL debut in Week 7 against the Seahawks.

The Arizona Cardinals lost on Sunday 20-10 on the road to the Seattle Seahawks. In the loss, rookie cornerback Garrett Williams made his NFL debut, playing for the first time since he tore his ACL in college last October.

He played pretty well.

However, he wasn’t the only Cardinals rookie to make his NFL debut.

Quarterback Clayton Tune and tight end Elijah Higgins also played in the NFL for the first time.

Williams finished with two tackles, an interception, which also counts as a pass breakup.

Tune played only one snap. It was a fake punt on special teams. He completed a four-yard pass. It was fourth-and-nine, so it was not successful.

Higgins was active for the first time this season and got to play on offense and special teams.

He logged seven special teams snaps and six on offense. He had his first NFL reception, although it was for zero yards.

Cardinals LT D.J. Humphries ejected from game vs. Seahawks

Humphries struck an official when taking a swipe at a Seahawks player.

The Arizona Cardinals lost their starting left tackle in the first half of their game against the Seattle Seahawks. D.J. Humphries did not get hurt. He was ejected.

It happened on what was a mess of a play.

Quarterback Josh Dobbs threw an interception in the end zone. However, Seattle was penalized for roughing the passer and for unnecessary roughness. Because Dobbs was hit hard, Humphries was upset. He attempted to take a swipe at a Seattle defender. He missed and ended up striking one of the game officials in the head.

It was an automatic ejection and gave the Cardinals a first-and-goal from the 25-yard line.

They scored on the next play when Dobbs ran 25 yards for the touchdown but they would go without Humphries the rest of the game. Kelvin Beachum replaced him in the lineup at left tackle.

Metcalf misses a game for the first time in his NFL career.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver will not play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7. It is the first time in his career missing a game. He was questionable with rib and hip injuries this week but was made inactive for the game 90 minutes before kickoff. He would not dress.

The Seahawks also will miss a starting offensive lineman.

  • LB Devin Bush
  • WR DK Metcalf
  • CB Artie Burns
  • RB Zach Charbonnet
  • G Phil Haynes
  • C Evan Brown
  • T Raiqwon O’Neal

With no Metcalf, it means a larger role for rookies Jaxon Smith Njigba and Jake Bobo.

Brown was questionable for the game with a hip injury. With Brown out, it means rookie Olu Oluwatimi will make his first NFL start.

Cardinals inactives: Budda Baker, Garrett Williams to play vs. Seahawks

Budda Baker returns to the starting lineup after missing five games with a hamstring injury.

The Arizona Cardinals released their list of inactive players 90 minutes before kickoff of their Week 7 road matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. They got reinforcements for a banged-up secondary.

Safety Budda Baker, activated from injured reserve after being out five weeks with a hamstring injury, dressed and was set to start. Rookie cornerback Garrett Williams, activated from the non-football injury list, would make his debut. While Baker would start, Williams’ role is unknown.

The Cardinals’ inactive players were no surprise.

Arizona Cardinals Week 7 inactives

  • WR Zach Pascal
  • S Qwuantrezz Knight
  • LB Jesse Luketa
  • CB Antonio Hamilton
  • S Jalen Thompson
  • OL Carter O’Donnell
  • OL Elijah Wilkinson

Pascal was questionable with a neck injury and did not practice all week. Hamilton was ruled out with a groin injury and Thompson misses his second straight game with a hamstring injury. Wilkinson was out with a neck injury.

Dennis Daley will start in Wilkinson’s place at left guard.

Baker’s return balances Thompson’s absence at safety. Baker and K’Von Wallace will start. With both Thompson and Hamilton out, the question is who will play in the slot.

Luketa is inactive for the second straight week.

Rookie tight end Elijah Higgins will make his NFL debut. He is active for the first time this season. He probably will fill Pascal’s role on special teams and perhaps on offense.
