DC Vance Joseph explains keys to slowing Seahawks’ offense

In what is likely an oversimplification, the Cardinals need to slow Seattle’s run game, limit DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett and win 3rd down.

The Arizona Cardinals head into Week 6 taking on one of the league’s most productive offenses. The Seattle Seahawks are seventh in the league in scoring, averaging 25.4 per game and eighth in yards, gaining an average of 368 per game.

The Cardinals slowed the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense last week in a loss, holding them to under 400 yards of offense for the first time this season and a season-low 20 points.

Can they do it again against the Seahawks?

Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, speaking to reporters Thursday, detailed what their focus will be.

“It’s an offense that has two great receivers and a quarterback who is playing well and the running game is pretty good,” he said.

The two receivers are DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. The quarterback is Geno Smith and the running back had been Rashaad Penny until he broke his leg last week. The Seahawks will turn to rookie Ken Walker, someone Joseph believes will be able to do some good things in this league.

“Penny’s hurt, obviously, but Walker, the rookie from Michigan State, is a real dude,” he said.

The key to defensive success will be simple — “Stopping the run and keeping 14 (Metcalf) from beating you and 16 (Lockett) from beating you is the plan.”

The Cardinals have recently done a very good job at limiting top receivers. They held Raiders WR Davante Adams to two catches for 16 yards. Rams WR Cooper Kupp, who has basically lit up everyone over the last two seasons, only had four catches for 45 yards against the Cardinals, and Eagles WR A.J. Brown only had three catches for 32 yards — all on their first possession of the game — last week.

“You have to stop their best players first,” Joseph said when asked about it. “If you don’t, you’re probably not going to win.”

They struggled with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in Week 1 and were blown out.

Joseph also believes that completely stopping opposing offenses is tougher than ever before with how teams spread players out and with league rules that promote offensive production.

He preaches three things.

“Yardage in this league is going to happen. You can’t worry about that in my opinion,” he said. “I think the most important thing is points, and that comes through third down, red zone and taking the ball away.”

On Sunday, Seattle might be able to move the ball, but if the Cardinals can limit their third-down conversions, hold them to field goals in the red zone and force a turnover or two, that should do the job.

Gabe Jackson, Al Woods doubtful for Seahawks; Tyler Lockett good to go

The Seahawks will be down a special teams ace and likely a pair of starters when they take on the Cardinals at home Sunday afternoon.

After having an appearance on the injury report Thursday, wide receiver Tyler Lockett is good to go.

However, one player has been ruled out, another two starters are doubtful and five players are questionable for the game.

Cardinals vs. Seahawks ultimate Week 6 preview

One of these two NFC West teams will head into next week back at the .500 mark as they look to keep pace in the NFC West.

The Arizona Cardinals find themselves in a pivotal matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. It’s too early to call a Week 6 game a must-win, but this is pretty close.

A win against Seattle and the Cardinals are back to .500 with All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins returning this week. There are certainly worse scenarios than that one.

Perhaps the Cardinals add more help via the trade deadline in the pass rush department. General Manager Steve Keim hasn’t been shy about doing so in the past three seasons.

None of that matters if the Cards can’t pick up a win against a surprisingly solid Seahawks team. Let’s take a look at this one.

Cardinals believe Seahawks QB Geno Smith’s success is no fluke

Smith is playing at a high level and is a full-time starter for the first time since 2014. As fluky as it seems, the Cardinals believe it is real.

One of the biggest surprises so far this NFL season has been the play of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith. He has been in the league for a decade now and after seemingly flaming out as a starting quarterback years ago, he seemed destined to finish his career as a nice veteran backup.

However, after the Seahawks traded away Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, Smith won the starting job and has put up big numbers.

He leads the NFL with a 75.2% completion percentage and has the league’s highest passer rating at 113.2. He has 1,305 passing yards with nine touchdown passes and two interceptions, averaging 8.3 yards per attempt.

Five games into the season, he is only four touchdown passes away from tying his career high in a season.

He was last a full-time starter in 2014 with the New York Jets.

Most would think that these numbers are a fluke.

The Arizona Cardinals’ coaching staff, who are preparing to face Smith and the Seahawks this coming Sunday afternoon, do not agree.

“Watching him all week, he’s done some special stuff,” defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said Thursday. “He’s playing controlled, he’s reading defenses, keeping plays alive, he’s putting them in good plays. When you watch it, you can’t say it’s not real. It’s real.”

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury is impressed, too.

“You turn the tape on, I don’t care who you are, if you watch it and you didn’t know names, you’d think he’s a top-five guy,” he said Wednesday. ‘He’s playing that well.”

Smith has the Seattle offense playing extremely well. Even though the Cardinals are favored, a win won’t come easy with how Smith is playing.
