Cardinals’ J.J. Watt not expected to play in Week 1 vs. Chiefs

After missing 10 games last season, he misses the Cardinals’ first game of the year in 2022.

The Arizona Cardinals entered the weekend of their Week 1 home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs with four players listed as questionable to play. One is defensive lineman J.J. Watt.

Watt has a calf injury and did not practice all week. He is not expected to play as the Cardinals host the Chiefs Sunday afternoon, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With 16 more games in the season following the opener, the Cardinals want to be smart with Watt.

Watt played in only seven games last season.

Not having him in the lineup will make things tougher for the Arizona defense against a potent Chiefs offense. They will have only five defensive linemen available for the game. Zach Allen, Rashard Lawrence and Leki Fotu will likely get the start, while Michael Dogbe and Jonathan Ledbetter will rotate in and out of the game.

TE Zach Ertz expected to play for Cardinals vs. Chiefs

Zach Ertz was officially questionable for the game. He should get the start and have at least some role on offense against the Chiefs.

The Arizona Cardinals come into their Week 1 Sunday afternoon matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs with four players listed as questionable on the final injury report of the week. One is tight end Zach Ertz, who has been dealing with a calf injury for the last month.

Despite only getting limited practice reps on Wednesday and Friday and none on Thursday, Ertz is expected to play, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

He will play, barring any pregame setbacks when he warms up.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said that, even if Ertz could play, they would be smart about how much.

Ertz had 56 receptions for 574 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games for the Cardinals last season after he was acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles.

With receiver DeAndre Hopkins suspended for the first six games of the year and Rondale Moore out with a hamstring injury, having Ertz available is big.

For those who have Ertz on their fantasy team, this is good news, although having a limited role might limit his production.

Cardinals WR Rondale Moore aggravates hamstring, getting MRI

With this latest injury, the Cardinals could be without Rondale Moore, DeAndre Hopkins and Zach Ertz on offense while facing the Chiefs.

The Arizona Cardinals could be down another key player for their season opener this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs. Already dealing with several starters with injuries, now it is wide receiver Rondale Moore.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, Moore injured his hamstring in Thursday’s practice and is set to have an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

Moore did not appear on the team’s original injury report Wednesday. He was listed as limited on Thursday.

He is listed as the starting ‘X’ receiver, the position DeAndre Hopkins normally would play, for the Cardinals on their initial depth chart of the year.

He was slated to have a big role on offense in his second season.

With this new injury, the Cardinals could be down Hopkins, Moore and potentially tight end Zach Ertz, who is dealing with a calf injury.

With injuries and questions on defense as they face a dangerous Chiefs offense this weekend, they need their offense to produce.

Moore was going to be a big part of that.

If he can’t play, Andy Isabella is listed as his backup, although it could mean moving Marquise Brown outside and playing Greg Dortch in the slot.

Zach Ertz returns to practice for the Cardinals

Pro-Bowl tight end Zach Ertz returned to practice on Wednesday for the Cardinals ahead of their week one battle with the Kansas City Chiefs

It has been a concerning week for the Arizona Cardinals leading up to their home opener.

One of the best teams in the league is coming to town in the Kansas City Chiefs, a game where the Cards were already underdogs.

This week, however, many key veterans have not practiced, leading to growing concern about who will be available this Sunday.

One of those important veterans seems to be progressing toward playing — tight end Zach Ertz. In the open part of practice Wednesday, Ertz was suited up and on the field, according to multiple reporters in attendance.

Ertz, who did not practice the last two days or suit up in the preseason, has been dealing with a calf injury. Kliff Kingsbury called him day-to-day on Monday, but clearly his practicing today is a great sign. He said that Wednesday’s participation would be important to Ertz’ ability to play this week.

Last season, Ertz tied the Cardinals’ single-season reception record for tight ends with 56 in just 11 games. He immediately became a reliable target for Kyler Murray and figures to have an increased role with the suspension of DeAndre Hopkins.

Ertz is an important matchup for the Cardinals as the Chiefs had plenty of defensive struggles last season, particularly early on. In a game that is projected to be a shootout, the Cards will need every weapon they have.

If the Cardinals are going to beat the Chiefs this Sunday, they are going to need all of their stars on the field. Let’s hope Wednesday’s practice means Ertz will be one of them.
