Trace McSorley to start vs. Buccaneers as Colt McCoy ruled out with concussion

McSorley, after throwing two second-half interceptions against the Broncos, will make his first NFL start Christmas night against the Bucs.

The Arizona Cardinals will face quarterback Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Christman night at home without quarterbacks Kyler Murray or Colt McCoy.

Murray is out for the season with a  torn ACL and head coach Kliff Kingsbury ruled out McCoy for the game in Week 16 as he works through concussion protocol.

That means Trace McSorley will make his first career start.

McSorley has appeared in four games this season but got the most work last week, coming in early in the second half to replace McCoy. He completed 7-of-15 passes for 95 yards and two interceptions in a 24-15 loss.

He has appeared in seven games in his career. He has completed 46.2% of his passes for 256 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Tom Brady hasn’t beaten Cardinals since 2004

The Buccaneers’ road game against the Cardinals on Sunday is only Brady’s third-ever start against them.

The Arizona Cardinals face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this coming Sunday night at home. It will give Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady the opportunity to do something he has not done in nearly two decades — beat the Cardinals.

As great a career as Brady has had, he only has one career win against the Cardinals and it came in 2004.

Brady has only started twice against the Cardinals ever.

In 2004 as a member of the New England Patriots, he threw two touchdown passes and two interceptions a 23-12 win.

The Cardinals didn’t play the Patriots again until 2008. Brady was out that season with a knee injury. The Pats won that game 47-7 with Matt Cassel at quarterback.

In 2012, the next time they played, Brady started but the Cardinals came away with a 20-18 win when Stephen Gostkowski missed a game-winning field goal.

Brady missed the 2016 season opener between the Cardinals and Patriots when he was suspended four games for the “Deflategate” scandal. Jimmy Garoppolo started that game and the Pats came away with a 23-21 upset win in Arizona when Cardinals kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed a 47-yard field goal at the end of regulation that would have won the game.

The Cardinals and Pats played again in 2020 but Brady was already with the Buccaneers.

The Cardinals and Bucs have not played since 2019, before Brady’s arrival.

His one win against the Cardinals is tied for the fewest he has against any team. The other team he has beaten only once is the Patriots, whom he has faced only once in his career.

What’s new with the Buccaneers in 2022?

What’s new with the Bucs in 2022, the Cardinals’ Week 16 opponent?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are traveling to the desert to take on what’s left of a Cardinals roster that has disappointed mightily this season.

Tampa Bay was projected to be one of the top dogs in the NFC, but are anything but that with their 6-8 record. While they technically have the No. 4 seed based on how terrible the NFC South is, they have not looked like a Super Bowl contender this season.

The Bucs have been defeated by double-digits in each of their last two games, those being the 49ers and Bengals. Their most recent win was a late 13-point comeback against the New Orleans Saints at home, which is far from an impressive team to beat.

In the offseason, the Bucs had a scare with Tom Brady retiring for a few weeks. He ultimately returned to the team, which was followed by an influx of free agent signings and re-signings. It essentially prevented a rebuild, or at least postponed it another year.

In training camp and throughout their first few games, the Bucs suffered numerous key injuries to their offensive line, which has led to what is statistically the worst rushing offense in the NFL.

Despite having two talented backs in Leonard Fournette and Rachaad White, the Bucs cannot move the ball on the ground, which leads to unfavorable passing situations for Tom Brady. They aren’t particularly great at pass blocking either, which has contributed to their struggles.

The Bucs have three games to go, with the Panthers and Falcons on the schedule following their matchup with the Cardinals. This is a playoff-type game for them in terms of importance with the Panthers just one game behind them.

Cardinals sign new QB to practice squad

They add James Morgan and cut Carson Strong, whom they added last week.

The Arizona Cardinals didn’t need long to decide that quarterback Carson Strong, whom they signed to the practice squad last week, wasn’t needed.

They released him from the practice squad Tuesday and replaced with another quarterback — James Morgan.

Morgan is a 6-4, 213-lb quarterback who was drafted in the fourth round in 2020 by the New York Jets out of Florida Internationa. He spent his rookie season on the Jets’ active roster but didn’t see game action. Last year, he was on the practice squads of the Jets, Steelers, Panthers and Colts. In college, he played 44 career games at Florida International (2018-19) and Bowling Green (2016-17) and completed 699-of-1,221 passes for 8,654 yards with 65 touchdowns while also rushing for three touchdowns.

He is the fourth quarterback on the roster between the 53-man roster and the practice squad. Colt McCoy is in concussion protocols, Trace McSorley will get starter reps in practice and David Blough will get the backup reps.

Cardinals are home underdogs vs. Buccaneers in Week 16

The Cardinals are underdogs at home in their Christmas night game against the Buccaneers.

The Arizona Cardinals play their final home game of the season in Week 16 on Christmas night facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It will be only the third time Tom Brady starts against them.

The two teams kick off Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. ET at State Farm Stadium and will air on NBC. Below, we look at the betting odds and lines for the Bucs at Cardinals Week 16 matchup, based on BetMGM odds for Week 16.

The 4-10 Cardinals are coming off a 24-15 loss to the Denver Broncos, their fourth straight loss. They also might be without quarterback Colt McCoy, who suffered a concussion in the loss.

The Bucs lead the NFC South with only a 6-8 record and are coming off a 34-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. They have lost two in a row.

Buccaneers at Cardinals Week 16 odds and lines

Moneyline:

  • Buccaneers -250 (bet $250 to win $100)
  • Cardinals +200 (bet $100 to win $200)

The Bucs are 6-8 straight up and 2-4 on the road. At -250 odds, they are given 71.43% implied odds of winning. It would take a $250 wager on the Bucs to win $100 if they win the game.

ATS (Against the spread)

  • Buccaneers -6 (-110)
  • Cardinals +6 (-110)

The Buccaneers are 3-10-1 ATS this season. They opened the week as four-point favorites. A $110 ATS bet in Tampa Bay wins $100 if the Bucs beat the Cardinals by more than six points.

The Cardinals are 6-8 ATS on the season. A $110 ATS wager wins $100 if the Cardinals beat the Bucs, the game ends in a tie or they lose by five or fewer points.

Total (Over/Under)

  • Over 41.5 (-110)
  • Under 41.5 (-110)

A $110 bet on the Over wins $100 if the two teams combine for 42 points or more.

A $110 bet on the Under wins $100 if they combine for 41 or fewer points.

The Bucs are 4-10 O/U this season and the Cardinals are 8-6 O/U.

Buccaneers vs. Cardinals history

Dating back to 1977, the Cardinals and Bucs have faced each other only 21 times. The Cardinals hold a slight 11-10 advantage in the all-time series.

The Bucs won the last matchup 30-27 in 2019. Cardinals QB Kyler Murray threw 3 TD passes but the Bucs got the go-ahead touchdown with under two minutes left in the game.

The Cardinals had won the three previous meetings.

Cardinals QB Colt McCoy has never started against the Buccaneers in his career. Bucs QB Tom Brady has only started against the Cardinals twice in his career. He is 1-1 against them and his only win against them was in 2004.

QB Trace McSorley could start for Cardinals vs. Buccaneers

Colt McCoy suffered a concussion on Sunday and must clear league protocols before he can play.

The Arizona Cardinals already lost quarterback Kyler Murray for the rest of the season. Their backup, Colt McCoy, is now in league concussion protocols and his status for the Cardinals’ Week 16 home matchup Christmas night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is certainly in doubt.

That means Trace McSorley could end up starting.

McSorley did not fare will in relief of McCoy on Sunday in the Cardinals’ 24-15 loss to the Denver Broncos. He completed 7-of-15 passes for 95 yards and two interceptions.

Of course, he had to play with only few practice reps leading up to the game.

Unless McCoy clears protocols before Wednesday, McSorley will get all the starter reps.

That could mean adjustments.

“We’ll try to adapt to what we think he does best,” coach Kliff Kingsbury said after the game on Sunday. “If he gets this week, we’ll put in things that he likes and he’s comfortable with.”

The team is confident in McSorley’s abilities.

“He’s the guy who will get better with the more reps he has,” Kingsbury said. “We’ve seen him operate at a high level at times.”
