Cardinals sign RB Tony Jones Jr. to active roster

Jones was on the practice squad and likely will be the backup running back on Sunday against the Browns.

The Arizona Cardinals, needing running back depth, made a roster move to ensure they have players available this Sunday when they go on the road to face the Cleveland Browns.

They announced Thursday that running back Tony Jones Jr. was signed from the practice squad to the active roster. He will likely get to play this weekend.

James Conner is still on injured reserve for at least one more game. Emari Demercado, who has started the last two games, injured his toe on Sunday and was unable to practice on Wednesday and Thursday, putting his availability this weekend very much in doubt. Even Damien Williams, who played the last two games, getting elevated from the practice squad, is hurt and was placed on the practice squad injured reserve this week.

Before adding Jones to the roster, Keaontay Ingram was the only other running back on the roster.

Jones originally joined the Cardinals on a waiver claim. Less than a week later, he was released and subsequently signed to the practice squad.

In 22 career games with the Saints and Seahawks, Jones has 88 rushing attempts for 249 yards and two touchdowns.

To replace Jones on the practice squad, the Cardinals signed defensive lineman Kendal Vickers, a 6-foot-3, 295-pound interior defender who has played in 27 games since entering the NFL in 2018 as an undrafted free agent.

He has two career sacks and 22 career tackles.

Cardinals, Browns have 1 small player connection

While no players on either team’s active roster played for the other team, RB Kenyan Drake, a former Cardinal, is on Cleveland’s practice squad

The Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns face one another in Cleveland this weekend in Week 9. On their 53-man rosters, there are no player connections.

No Cardinals players played for the Browns and no Browns players on the active roster played for the Cardinals.

There is, though, one new connection between the two teams.

On the Browns’ practice squad is running back Kenyan Drake, whom they added this week.

Drake played for the Cardinals in the second half of the 2019 season and all of 2020. He had a career game for the Cardinals against the Browns in 2019, scoring four touchdowns and 137 yards in a 38-24 Arizona win.

We will see on Saturday if he is elevated to the active roster and gets to dress for the game.

Cardinals haven’t lost to the Browns in a long time

The Cardinals have won the last five matchups and have not lost to Cleveland since 2003.

The Arizona Cardinals face the Cleveland Browns this weekend and attempt to extend the length of time it has been since they last lost to them to more than 20 years.

While the Browns hold a commanding lead in their all-time series, it has been a long time since they beat the Cardinals.

It has been 20 years.

The last time the Cardinals lost to the Browns, it was 2003. Kelly Holcomb was the Browns’s starting quarterback and went up against Jeff Blake for the Cardinals.

In that game, Holcomb threw three touchdown passes while Blake and Josh McCown combined for no touchdown passes and three interceptions in a 44-6 win.

Since then, the Cardinals have won the last 5 meetings, including the last two in Cleveland.

The Browns lead the all-time series 33-16-3, dating back to 1950. The Browns won the first 12 meetings.

Injury update for Cardinals after loss to Ravens

The injuries to OL Trystan Colon, RB Damien Williams and WR Michael Wilson are still being evaluated.

The Arizona Cardinals came out of their Week 8 loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a couple of injuries. Head coach Jonathan Gannon gave an update on Monday about the injuries, although he didn’t have much information.

The three players brought up are still being evaluated.

“We’ll see how the next 48 hours go and how that progresses and how the week goes,” he said.

Offensive lineman Trystan Colon has a calf injury that caused him to exit the game on Sunday.

Running back Damien Williams has a foot injury.

Receiver Michael Wilson was seen going to the locker room late in the game. Gannon didn’t specify what his injury was but did say “he should be okay.”

The Cardinals’ first injury report of the week will come out Wednesday afternoon.

REPORT: Clayton Tune to start at QB for Cardinals vs. Browns

While Jonathan Gannon said it would be Clayton or Kyler Murray, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the plan is for Tune to start in Cleveland.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon backtracked from what he said Sunday night to make a change at quarterback. After initially saying Josh Dobbs would start in Week 9 against the Cleveland Browns as he did for the first eight games of the season, he said Monday that either Kyler Murray or rookie Clayton Tune would be in the starting lineup.

While he would not commit one way or the other, the Cardinals plan on starting Tune, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, via ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss.

Murray is still ramping up to play. It was reported by Ian Rapoport that he would play either this week or next.

Tune has thrown one pass this season, a four-yard completion on a fake punt in Week 7.

Gannon said he would make a decision on the quarterback later in the week, but Schefter’s report suggests the Cardinals already have a plan, and it makes sense. Whoever the starter is would be better off getting a full load of first-team, game-prep practice reps rather than splitting them.

Murray will have his third week of practice this week since being designated for return from PUP. He does not have to be activated until November 8.

“He’s been working hard at practice,” Gannon said Monday. “He hasn’t played in a game yet but the things that we saw in preseason and the things that we’ve asked him to work on his game he’s done a good job with. I think he’ll go out there and sling it if he’s out there.”

Jonathan Gannon changes mind, benches QB Josh Dobbs in Week 9

Either Kyler Murray or Clayton Tune will start for the Cardinals in Week 9 on the road against the Cleveland Browns.

The Arizona Cardinals are making a change at quarterback this week. Head coach Jonathan, just a day after saying that Josh Dobbs will be his starting quarterback in Week 9, has decided to bench Dobbs and make a change.

He told reporters Monday that either Kyler Murray or Clayton Tune would start, according to Darren Urban.

Sunday night after the Cardinals lost 31-24 to the Baltimore Ravens, Gannon expressed 100% confidence in Dobbs and in him giving the team the best chance of winning.

A night and film review changed his mind.

“Just watching the tape again, talking with the staff, feel like this gives us the best chance to win,” Gannon said, according to ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss.

Gannon said he doesn’t know what day he will know whether Murray or Tune will start. The team will travel to Cleveland on Friday.

Dobbs might not even be active for the game. He might be the emergency third quarterback.

In Dobb’s eight starts, the Cardinals were 1-7 and he completed 62.8% of his passes for 1,569 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions.

He also rushed for 258 yards and three scores.
