The Arizona Cardinals picked up a preseason-opening 36-23 win Friday night over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Quarterbacks Trace McSorley and Jarret Gurantano each threw touchdown passes. Running back Jonathan Ward had a pair of touchdown runs. Linebacker Victoir Dimukeje had a pair of sacks. Receiver Greg Dortch made plays in the passing game and had a big punt return.
The Bengals also had their highlights.

First series:
Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano completed a two-yard pass, threw an incompletion and was sacked.
Second series:
Undrafted rookie running back T.J. Pledger ran for eight yards. Guarantano threw a deep pass to Andy Isabella that was incomplete. They had a delay of game and then Guarantano scrambled two yards short of the line to gain.
Third series:
With the game in hand, the Cardinals were in victory formation and had two kneeldowns to close out the game.
It was a good way to give Murray something to do and to stay involved but, luckily, they won’t need him calling plays once the season starts. They need him making plays on the field.
Kyler Murray will not play vs. the Bengals, but now there is a reason to watch the fourth quarter of the Cardinals’ preseason opener.

After that, 12 Sports reporter Cameron Cox reported from the sideline during pregame coverage that it was to be Murray who will have headsets on and call plays in the fourth quarter.
It isn’t the first time for Murray.
When Murray was given a day off of practice before testing positive for COVID-19, he called plays in practice.
It is a way to keep Murray mentally engaged. He won’t get bored on the sideline of a game in which he isn’t playing.

Only two players on their 90-man roster were once with the Cardinals.
The Cincinnati Bengals are the Arizona Cardinals’ first preseason opponent. Typically, opponents have a number of former Cardinals players on their roster. It is often more true with a 90-man training camp roster.
However, the Bengals, of all 90 players they have, only two spent time with the Cardinals.
One is center Lamont Gaillard. Gaillard was drafted by the Cardinals out of Georgia in the sixth round in 2020. After one season with the team, he was released last year during training camp and spent time last season with the Bengals on their practice squad.
The other is cornerback Jalen Davis. Davis spent the last two seasons with the Bengals and has played in 21 games for them.
He spent most of the 2019 season on the practice squad and appeared in two games late in the season. He also saw time on the practice squad in 2020 before joining the Bengals.
But that is it.
The Cardinals have receiver A.J. Green, linebacker Nick Vigil and offensive lineman Justin Murray who are former Bengals.
LIke the Cardinals, the Bengals will only have a couple of young expected starters playing, with veterans sitting out the preseason opener.

According to Bengals Wire managing editor Chris Roling, really only rookie first-round safety Dax Hill and second-year starting guard Jackson Carman will get significant playing time.
The Cardinals will also have a handful of young players who have something to prove to play like cornerback Marco Wilson and linebacker Zaven Collins.
