Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Capitals (22-9-9) visit the Boston Bruins (22-12-2) Thursday. Puck drop at TD Garden is set for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Capitals vs. Bruins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Capitals have had a rough January with just two wins in seven outings. They picked up a 4-3 overtime win at home over the Winnipeg Jets last time out Tuesday as LW Alex Ovechkin scored for the third consecutive game and extended his point streak to five games.

The Bruins had a five-game win streak snapped Tuesday when they dropped a 7-1 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes on home ice. G Tuukka Rask allowed 5 goals on just 12 shots before getting the hook and will not be between the pipes Thursday. Boston won at Washington 7-3 Jan. 10.

Capitals at Bruins projected goalies

Vitek Vanecek (8-4-5, 2.49 GAA, .911 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Linus Ullmark (13-5-0, 2.52 GAA, .917 SV%)

Vanecek allowed 3 goals on 33 shots in the overtime win against the Jets Tuesday and recorded his lone shutout of the season with 23 saves two starts back at the New York Islanders. Vanecek came in relief and allowed 3 goals on 15 shots to the Bruins Jan. 10.

Ullmark has picked up wins in all six of his January starts, although he’s allowed 3 goals apiece in four of those games and has been granted plenty of goal support – including his Jan. 10 start against the Capitals. However, the Swede hasn’t allowed more than 3 goals in a start since Nov. 11.

Capitals at Bruins odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 4, Capitals 3

Money line

The BRUINS (-175) are right on the edge of a safe money line play at this price as I expect them to get back on track against a Washington squad that’s struggled all month. Boston was embarrassed at home Tuesday and will come out strong and get back on track against a team they handled just 10 days ago.

I’d bet BRUINS (-175), but I’d certainly consider a pass if the line gets much steeper.

Against the spread

AVOID.

The Capitals insurance price (+1.5, -175) is just too steep for a line that could be ruined with an empty-net goal in the waning minutes of play. The Bruins price (-1.5, +135) isn’t enticing enough to chase a multi-goal victory against a team of the Capitals’ caliber, even if they are in a slump.

Over/Under

The OVER 5.5 (-130) is my favorite play in this game.

The Over is 7-2-1 for Boston in January, and it’s hit in three of the Caps’ last four games. Both squads are sporting netminders that are comfortable letting in 3 goals, and both squads sport offensive production that can help push the tempo.

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins Game 4 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins Game 4 NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Bruins look to put the Washington Capitals on the brink of elimination in Game 4 of their East Division Semifinal series Friday. Puck drop at TD Garden will be at 6:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Capitals-Bruins Game 3 odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

All three games in this series went to overtime. The Capitals won Game 1 3-2 on home ice, but the Bruins responded with back-to-back wins, including Wednesday’s 3-2 victory in double overtime.

The Bruins have outshot the Capitals 117-108 thus far while outscoring them just 9-8. Boston beat the higher-seeded Capitals 4-2-2 in the regular season while narrowly outscoring them 26-25.

  • Money line: Capitals +135 (bet $100 to win $135) | Bruins -165 (bet $165 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Capitals +1.5 (-190) | Bruins -1.5 (+155)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +115 | U: -135)

Capitals at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Ilya Samsonov (13-4-1, .902 SV%, 2.69 GAA) at Tuukka Rask (15-5-2, .913 SV%, 2.28 GAA)

Samsonov’s start in Game 3 was his first career playoff appearance. He was sidelined due to COVID-19 protocols for Games 1 and 2 but stopped 40 of 43 shots in his first game since May 1. He was 0-1-0 with a .872 save percentage and 3.66 goals against average in 2 games against Boston in the regular season.

Rask has stopped 100 of 108 shots through three postseason games and remains firmly in control of the Boston crease. He was 7-2-1 with a .908 SV% and 2.27 GAA in 11 home games in the regular season.

Capitals at Bruins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Capitals 3, Bruins 2

Money line (ML)

The CAPITALS (+135) are getting too high of a number for how tight this series has been through three games. The +135 odds represent an implied win probability of 42.55%.

Washington held a lead with under 10 minutes remaining in each of the last two games and will be able to hold on as Samsonov settles into full-time starting duties.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

CAPITALS +1.5 (-190) is a safe play but without nearly as much value as the money line.

These two teams played each other close all year with the last four meetings dating back to the regular season decided by a single goal.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 5.5 (-140) after just 5 goals were scored in two of the first three games of this series, even with all three going beyond 60 minutes.

Three of the last four games for both teams played to a total of 5 or fewer goals.

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Washington Capitals (26-11-4) visit the Boston Bruins (21-11-6) Sunday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at TD Garden. Below, we analyze the Capitals-Bruins odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Capitals scratched out a 4-3 road win against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night, snapping a two-game mini skid. That slide included a 4-2 loss against goaltender Jeremy Swayman and the Bruins in D.C. on Thursday.

The Bruins have had third- and fourth-string goalies Swayman and Dan Vladar keeping them afloat while Tuukka Rask is sidelined due to injury and Jaroslav Halak is out due to COVID.

The B’s are 2-1-1 across the past four, posting at least one point in three of those games.

Capitals at Bruins: Odds, spread and lines

  • Money line: Capitals -105 (bet $105 to win $100) | Bruins -110 (bet $110 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Capitals +1.5 (-300) | Bruins -1.5 (+230)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Capitals at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Ilya Samsonov (9-3-1, 2.97 GAA, .894 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Dan Vladar (2-1-1, 2.25 GAA, .922 SV%)

Samsonov is looking to bounce back after dropping a 4-2 decision against the Bruins at home on Thursday.

He allowed four goals on 32 shots, and he has coughed up four or more goals in each of his past four starts. He is 0-1-0 with a 3.66 GAA and .872 SV% in one start and one relief appearance against the Bruins this season.

Vladar has dropped each of his past two starts, although he has allowed three or fewer goals in each of his four starts to date.

The B’s have not provided much offense for him, averaging just 2.0 goals per outing in his four appearances this season.

Capitals at Bruins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Capitals 4, Bruins 2

Money line (ML)

The CAPITALS (-105) have cashed in 11 of their past 15 games on the road while going 4-1 in the past five against teams with a winning record.

They’re also playing the third game in four days, and they’re 6-0 in the past six in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation.

For the Bruins (-115), they haven’t fared well in back-to-back situations, going just 2-6 in their past eight games playing on no rest.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Capitals +1.5 (-300) will cost you three times your potential return if you’re looking for insurance. Instead, look to the alternate line and take the CAPITALS -1.5 (+260) for a chance to more than double up.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-115) is the lean in this one. Samsonov has been more than giving lately, and the Over is 6-2-1 in the past nine road games for the Caps. The Over is also 4-1-1 in their past six as a road underdog.

For the B’s, the recent team trends all point to the Under, although the Over is 3-1-1 in their past five tries against the Caps.

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Washington Capitals (13-5-4) are still on the road for the second half of a two-game set against the Boston Bruins (12-5-3) at TD Garden. Friday’s puck drop will be at 7 p.m. ET following Washington’s 2-1 shootout win Wednesday. Below, we analyze the Capitals-Bruins odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Caps have rung up four straight wins to take control in the East Division. Friday’s contest will be the fourth game of a five-game road trip.

The Bruins have lost five of seven games coming into Friday. Three of those losses were by multi-goal margins. These teams split a two-game set earlier in the season but Boston managed to come away with three points.

Capitals at Bruins: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Capitals +125 (bet $100 to win $125) | Bruins -150 (bet $150 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Capitals +1.5 (-200) | Bruins -1.5 (+170)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Capitals at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Ilya Samsonov (2-0-1, .878 SV%, 2.92 GAA) vs. Jaroslav Halak (4-2-1, .903 SV%, 2.42 GAA)

Samsonov will make just his second start since a prolonged stay on the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols list. He stopped 19 of 21 shots in a win over the New Jersey Devils Sunday. He’ll need to string together some quality starts to regain the No. 1 job in net from rookie Vitek Vanecek.

Halak enters off of back-to-back losses for the first time this season. He allowed a total of 10 goals on 63 shots in games against the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. He stopped 23 of 26 shots in a victory over the Caps Feb. 1.

Capitals at Bruins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Capitals 3, Bruins 2

Money line (ML)

The CAPITALS (+125) are an attractive underdog play following Wednesday’s narrow head-to-head victory. They registered 53.25% of the total shot attempts and 57.58% of the scoring chances at 5-on-5 in the victory and took control in the third period.

Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play in the first half of this two-game set. They both have top-10 power-play units for the season, but an edge goes to Washington with a fifth-ranked 28.07% conversion rate with the man advantage.

Boston has the edge on the penalty kill, but it also takes more penalty minutes per game than Washington.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on the puck line and stick with the much more rewarding payout for the money line upset.

Washington is 13-9 against the spread compared to Boston’s 5-15 ATS record.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 6 (-105).

Wednesday’s game needed a shootout to get to 3 total goals scored, and it was the second straight Under result for both teams. Expect another prove-it game from Samsonov, and Halak should get back on track following a pair of poor results.
