Report: DAZN not interested in Canelo Alvarez-Avni Yildirim fight

The WBC has ordered a fight between Canelo Alvarez and Avni Yildirim for its vacant 168-pound title but DAZN doesn’t want to stream it.

DAZN evidently doesn’t like the sound of a Canelo Alvarez-Avni Yildirim fight.

A day after the WBC ordered an Alvarez-Yildirim fight for its vacant 168-pound title, BoxingScene.com is reporting that the streaming service is not willing to pony up the funds to showcase that fight.

Alvarez has a long-term contract with DAZN.

Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) is ranked No. 1 by the sanctioning body but doesn’t have the following or reputation to stir interest as the “B” side to Alvarez. The Turk is a solid fighter but nowhere near the class of Alvarez. He was stopped in three rounds by Chris Eubank Jr. in 2017 and lost a technical decision to Anthony Dirrell in February.

Alvarez evidently still wants to wants to fight this year but will have to find an opponent with whom both he and DAZN are comfortable. He has courted a number of viable foes – including titleholder Callum Smith — but no deal has been struck.

Also, it’s not clear whether DAZN will pay Alvarez what he demands to step back into the ring amid the coronavirus pandemic. BoxingScene reported that DAZN has offered him roughly half of the $40 million he received for his fights against Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev.

Thus, Alvarez’s immediate fate remains uncertain.

Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) stopped Kovalev in 11 rounds to win a light heavyweight title last November, his most-recent fight.

The WBC title became vacant when then-beltholder David Benavidez failed to make weight before his 10th-round stoppage of Roamer Alexis Angulo this past Saturday. Yildirim was expected to face the winner of that fight for the belt.

WBC orders fight between Canelo Alvarez, Avni Yildirim for 168-pound title

The WBC has ordered a match between Canelo Alvarez and No. 1-ranked Avni Yildirim for its vacant super middleweight title.

Canelo Alvarez might’ve found his next opponent.

The World Boxing Council Board of Governors voted 36-1 Tuesday to order a match between Alvarez and No. 1-ranked Avni Yildirim for the vacant WBC super middleweight title, the WBC tweeted.

No other details were provided. No date, no site, no information on whether the camps and the streaming platform DAZN like the idea.

“More details will be available in days to come,” was all the WBC said.

Alvarez, desperately seeking a viable opponent, might’ve caught a break when then-WBC titleholder David Benavidez lost his belt on the scale going into his fight with Roamer Alexis Angulo last Saturday.

That created a title vacancy. And Alvarez was among those who expressed interest in filling it.

An Alvarez-Yildirim fight isn’t as sexy as other possible matchups but it’s solid. Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) was set to fight the winner of the Benavidez-Angulo fight for the title before Benavidez failed to make weight.

The Turk’s only losses came against Chris Eubank Jr. in 2017 (KO 3) and Anthony Dirrell in February of last year (TD 10).

Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) is coming off an 11th-round knockout of Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO light heavyweight title this past November.

Jermall Charlo, Sergiy Derevyanchenko nearing deal on fall fight

Jermall Charlo and contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko are in the final stages of negotiations for a fight in either September or October.

Jermall Charlo needed significant challenge. And he reportedly has one.

Charlo, the middleweight titleholder, and contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko are in the final stages of negotiations for a fight in either September or October, according to The Athletic. No site or network was reported.

Charlo was elevated to the WBC’s full titleholder after Canelo Alvarez was designated “franchise” champion in June of last year but, in five fights since moving up from 154 ponds, he hadn’t faced a serious challenge.

Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs) should be a genuine test. The durable, well-schooled Ukrainian lost close decisions in title fights against Daniel Jacobs and Gennadiy Golovkin to build a reputation as one of the best in and around the division.

He reportedly also had received an offer to fight Canelo Alvarez, presumably at 168 pounds. The Athletic is reporting that Derevyanchenko wasn’t offered enough to take that fight.

Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs) has beaten Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Hugo Centeno Jr., Matt Korobov, Brandon Adams and Denis Hogan at 160 pounds, which led some to criticize his choice of opponents at middleweight.

No one will be critical of Derevyanchenko.

Eric Gomez of Golden Boy: ‘Very good chance’ Canelo fights Brit

Eric Gomez of Golden Boy said there’s a ‘very good chance’ Canelo Alvarez will fight either Callum Smith or John Ryder in September.

Will it be either Callum Smith or John Ryder?

Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, told Sky Sports that there’s a “very good chance” Canelo Alvarez will face a British fighter when he returns to the ring in September, meaning either Smith or Ryder.

However, Gomez also said, “We are not discarding any of the top guys.” And he added that it would be easier for Alvarez to face an American opponent because of coronavirus-related visa restrictions.

In other words, the search goes on.

Sky Sports asked Gomez specifically whether he could face Smith or Ryder. He responded by saying, “There is a very good chance. There are a couple of guys we are looking at as a possibility.”

Then he got into the visa issues, saying the selection of an American opponent would be less complicated.

“We don’t have to deal with any visa restrictions that have been imposed by the government,” he said. “If there is someone already here in the U.S.? That helps. It is more difficult now because of the restrictions.

“The borders are not all open so it isn’t easy to bring some fighters to the U.S. It all depends on the negotiations. We are not living in the world that we lived in last year. Canelo will be taking a significant pay cut. It depends on the negotiations.

“Anybody willing to come to the table and be reasonable, he will fight. We are not discarding any of the top guys.”

Sergiy Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs) of Ukraine, David Lemieux (41-4, 34 KOs) of Canada and Anthony Dirrell (33-2-1, 24 KOs) of Flint, Michigan, also have been mentioned as potential opponents for Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs).

Smith (27-0, 19 KOs) is a super middleweight titleholder who would afford Alvarez an opportunity to win a major belt in a fourth weight class. Ryder (28-5, 16 KOs) lost to Smith in a competitive fight in November, the last time both fighters were in the ring.

Alvarez was scheduled to face 168-pound titleholder Billy Joe Saunders in May but that fight was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic and the two couldn’t come to terms for a meeting in September.

That news prompted Smith’s trainer, Joe Gallagher, to say, “It’s supposed to have been a two-horse race, wasn’t it? Now he’s pulling himself out of it, Canelo has got no excuse now, but to fight Callum Smith.

“If that date and opportunity is put to Callum Smith, he’s ready to go.”

Ryder told Sky Sports: “There’s a few names in the hat. Hopefully my name is at the top and it gets picked out. Listen, he’s looking for an opponent, and I know the money is not there for these big shows. It’s a chance in a lifetime, I’m up for it.”

Will a third fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin happen?

Alvarez and Golovkin first met in September of 2017, with the fight ending in a controversial draw. Most observers thought Golvokin deserved to have his hand raised.

They fought again the following September, with Alvarez winning a tight majority decision. Golovkin and Co. believe they won that fight too.

The third fight seemed like a slam dunk after both signed contracts with the sports streaming service DAZN. However, it has yet to happen and it’s unclear when it will.

In this episode of The Ak & Barak Show, courtesy of DAZN, hosts Akin Reyes and Barak Bess asked Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s longtime promoter, about his fighter’s plans.

The Ak & Barak Show is available on DAZN and Sirius XM Fight Nation, Channel 156.

Who will Canelo Alvarez fight next?

That question remains unanswered. And the possibilities seem to be growing every day. Among the current list of potential foes: Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Anthony Dirrell, David Lemieux and John Ryder.

Derevyanchenko probably is the best fighter among that lot. But is he the best opponent for Alvarez when the Mexican superstar returns to the ring in September? And don’t forget: The Ukrainian fighter also has received an offer to fight middleweight titleholder Jermall Charlo.

So how does this drama end?

DAZN commentators Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora give their thoughts on this episode of Jabs with Mannix and Mora.

Sergiy Derevyanchenko receives offers from Canelo Alvarez, Jermall Charlo

Sergiy Derevyanchenko has received offers to fight Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight and Jermall Charlo at middleweight.

Sergiy Derevyanchenko vs. Canelo Alvarez? Derevyanchenko vs. Jermall Charlo? Boxing fans would embrace either matchup. And one or the other appears to be a realistic possibility.

BoxingScene.com is reporting that Derevyanchenko has received offers to fight Alvarez at 168 pounds on Sept. 12, around Mexican Independence Day, and Charlo sometime in the fall for Charlo’s 160-pound title.

Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs) is the No. 1 challenger to Charlo’s title and is coming off a close decision loss against Gennadiy Golovkin for a vacant 160-pound belt in October but has fought above that weight in nine of his 15 fights, meaning he would probably be comfortable at either weight.

The skillful, rugged Ukrainian would be an intriguing opponent for either Alvarez or Charlo.

Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) was scheduled to challenge for Billy Joe Saunders’ super middleweight title on May 2 in Las Vegas but those plans were scrapped after the coronavirus pandemic took hold. Saunders reportedly is now balking at the money available to fight Alvarez.

Derevyanchenko doesn’t present the opportunity to win a title in a fourth division but, after his strong performances against Daniel Jacobs (SD loss) and Golovkin (UD), he’s perceived as a legitimate threat to anyone at or near 160 pounds.

Alvarez also reportedly has considered former two-time 168-pound titleholder Anthony Dirrell, who is coming off a knockout loss (in part because of a cut) against David Benavidez in September.

Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs) hasn’t faced a top-tier opponent since he stopped Julian Williams at 154-pounds in December 2016. As a middleweight, he has fought Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Hugo Centeno Jr., Matvey Korobov, Brandon Adams and Dennis Hogan.

Charlo needs an opponent of Derevyanchenko’s stature to build some momentum.

Chris Eubank Jr. had been thought to be a leading candidate to challenge Charlo but, in light of the BoxingScene.com report, it appears that Derevyanchenko is the fight the product of Houston wants most.

Video: Ak & Barak: Anthony Dirrell believes Canelo-Kovalev fight was fixed

Anthony Dirrell said on this episode of The Ak & Barak Show that he believes Sergey Kovalev took a dive in his fight with Canelo Alvarez.

Canelo Alvarez made history by moving up to light heavyweight and stopping Sergey Kovalev last November, giving the Mexican a major title in a third division.

Anthony Dirrell doesn’t believe the result was legitimate.

The former super middleweight titleholder said on this episode of The Ak & Barak Show, courtesy of DAZN, that he believes Kovalev took a dive in the fight.

Dirrell has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Alvarez in September.

Hosts Akin Reyes and Barak Bess discussed the surprising accusation and more with Dirrell.

The Ak & Barak Show is available on DAZN and Sirius XM Fight Nation, Channel 156.
