Canelo Alvarez focused on legacy, which doesn’t include Kamaru Usman fight: ‘Not right now’

Canelo Alvarez doesn’t see himself boxing UFC champion Kamaru Usman anytime soon – if at all.

[autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] doesn’t see himself boxing UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] anytime soon – if at all.

Although he didn’t completely rule out the idea, the reigning IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring super-middleweight champion isn’t as keen on the idea as Usman is.

Usman (20-1 MMA, 15-0 UFC) has been campaigning for a boxing match with fellow pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter Alvarez in recent months and although he hasn’t gotten the support from UFC president Dana White, the likes of Joe Rogan want to see the fight happen.

Canelo, however, said it can wait – if it happened at all.

“Never say no, but right now it’s not in my future,” Alvarez told TMZ. “Not right now. Yeah, it’s all about legacy right now, but you never know.”

Usman, who is currently healing from a hand injury, is projected to rematch Leon Edwards in July. Meanwhile, Alvarez will challenge Dmitry Bivol for his light heavyweight title on May 7 on DAZN pay-per-view.

Another fighter eager to crossover to boxing is UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, who was in attendance for Tyson Fury’s knockout win over Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Fury delivered a highlight-reel knockout of White in Round 6 and before leaving the ring, he was already promoting a a hybrid bout with Ngannou.

But both Usman and Ngannou would need White’s support while still under UFC contract if they were to box, just like Conor McGregor did when he fell short against Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

Ali Abdelaziz: Kamaru Usman knocks out ‘coward’ Canelo Alvarez in three rounds

Kamaru Usman’s manager believes the UFC welterweight champ can beat “any man alive,” including Canelo Alvarez at his own game.

MIAMI, Fla. – Ali Abdelaziz has made a bold prediction for a potential boxing match between [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] and [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag].

Abdelaziz, the Dominance MMA chief who manages Usman and an array of other high-proifle fighters, is pushing for the UFC welterweight champion to get his desired boxing match against Alvarez. Despite UFC president Dana White not being on board with the idea just yet, Abdelaziz said he really likes Usman’s chances against Alvarez.

“Kamaru will knock him out in three rounds,” Abdelaziz told MMA Junkie. “You cannot say no to Kamaru. He’s a guy who comes from Africa. He jumped a lot of obstacles. I believe in Kamaru. This is the difference between me and other people. I believe in him, I live with him, I breathe with him, I die with him, I fight with him. He’s a special person in my life.

“How many street fights have me and Kamaru been to? We’ve been in a lot of street fights, and I have to believe in him. I believe Kamaru can beat any man alive.”

[lawrence-related id=2527831,1953140,2529353]

Abdelaziz said that Usman, who’s No. 1 in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings and No. 2 on the USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie list, didn’t just want to test himself against any boxer. He wanted to go straight for the best. Abdelaziz also took a jab at boxers for their unwillingness to cross over into MMA.

“I know (Usman) didn’t want to fight Jake Paul; he didn’t want to fight Logan Paul,” Abdelaziz said. “He said I’m the pound-for-pound king in MMA, I want to fight the pound-for-pound coward in boxing because I think all these boxers are cowards because none of them want to come to MMA.

“They all want to come to boxing, but at the end of the day, in a street fight, who’s the baddest man on the planet? They cannot quote Canelo as the baddest man on the planet. They cannot quote Canelo the pound-for-pound best boxer because if they both in the street, who’s gonna win? Kamaru would beat his ass like he stole something.”

Usman, 34, is on a 19-fight overall winning streak and hasn’t lost since his second professional bout in May 2013. He’s successfully defended his UFC welterweight title five times with two wins each over Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal, and a victory over Gilbert Burns.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant: The Boxing Junkie analysis and prediction

Does Caleb Plant have a reasonable chance of beating Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight championship?

(Editor’s note: This post originally published at Boxing Junkie, part of the USA TODAY Network.)

[autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] is set to return to the ring, which is usually bad news for the man who will see him standing across the ring.

That man on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be [autotag]Caleb Plant[/autotag], a capable, but moderately experienced fighter who is about an 8-1 underdog (average of multiple outlets).

Does Plant have a reasonable chance of winning the pay-per-view fight for the undisputed super middleweight championship?

Depends how you define “reasonable.” He is a quick, athletic boxer with an extensive amateur background and a high ring IQ. However, he’ll be face to face with a beast that is evolving into an all-time great and is in his prime.

Tough assignment.

Here is a break down of the fight.

‘You couldn’t be f*cking dumber’: Dana White unloads on Showtime for brawl between Canelo, Plant

UFC president Dana White reacts to Showtime’s handling of the pre-fight press conference brawl between Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant.

LAS VEGAS – UFC president [autotag]Dana White[/autotag] knows a thing or two about brawls at press conferences.

On Tuesday afternoon, a brawl broke out at the pre-fight press conference for an upcoming boxing match between [autotag]Caleb Plant[/autotag] and [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag]. White, if present, is usually the man standing between UFC fighters when they come face-to-face at press conferences and weigh-ins, but was confused as to why the promoters allowed the two boxers to get so close without someone standing between them should tempers flare.

“I’m not surprised at ‘sh*t-Showtime’ those guys are great, they’re really good at what they do – from production, to press conferences, they’re f*cking awesome,” White said sarcastically during the Dana White’s Contender Series 40 post-fight news conference on Tuesday evening. “How long have you been in the business, that you would let two fighters go up to each other, face-to-face, without somebody there to try to (stop them).”

The brawl between the two fighters was quick, but damage was caused to Plant’s right eye. Initially thought to be caused by the open-handed strikes thrown by Alvarez, a cut on Plant’s right eye was caused by the sunglasses Plant was wearing, Plant’s manager, Luis DeCubas Jr. told ESPN. The cut is not expected to affect the fight as it is currently scheduled.

Showtime, who is the entity promoting the fight, drew harsh criticism from White as he believed they handled the entire situation poorly.

“Then, when it breaks out, there’s like two women that are there between them before there’s a man anywhere near it,” White continued about the brawl. “You couldn’t be f*cking dumber than what they did today. Risk a massive fight with one of the biggest stars in the sport by not having the fighters safe.

“You can’t have two alpha males walk up to each other face-to-face at the f*cking supper club or wherever they were today having that press conference, and let two guys stare down without someone there to break it up.”

Currently, White ensures either himself or one of the UFC matchmakers, Sean Shelby or Mick Maynard, are always present to stand between competitors when they do staredowns before fights.

There have been a number of times in the past where fighters have put their hands on each other during staredowns. Perhaps the most infamous UFC incident was between former champions Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier went at it as former UFC public relations vice president Dave Sholler attempted to stop the brawl.

While these moments are intended to be photo opportunities for the media and fans, the worst-case scenario is that a fight gets canceled due to a faceoff altercation, which has happened even when there is someone present to break the fighters apart, like when Jeremy Stephens shoved Drakkar Klose.

The idea is to keep the fighters from engaging in a full-on fight before their officially sanctioned bouts are scheduled to take place.

“But they’re awesome, they do a great job with everything they do,” White said sarcastically again, taking one last shot at Showtime.

Video: Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant get into heated brawl at a press conference in LA

Watch Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant get into a heated brawl at a pre-fight press conference in Los Angels.

Well, pre-fight brawls are certainly not exclusive to MMA.

[autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] and [autotag]Caleb Plant[/autotag] got into a serious exchange at a pre-fight press conference at the The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, Calif. on Tuesday afternoon.

The two got heated during their faceoff right before the presser. Plant seemed to get under the skin of Canelo with a few words, which got Canelo to shove Plant across the stage. The push got Plant to take a quick swing at Canelo and that sparked the quick back-and-forth.

Plant suffered a big cut under his right eye in consequence of the exchange. He was bleeding noticeably. It’s unsure if the cut will have an impact on the fight.

The two were separated and the press conference continued.

As of today, Canelo and Plant are set to meet on Nov. 6 on Showtime pay-per-view at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. Canelo, who holds the WBA, WBC, WBO super middleweight titles, attempts to become the undisputed champion by winning Plant’s IBF belt.

‘Canelo’ Alvarez throws shade at Floyd Mayweather for wanting to box MMA fighters

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez throws shade at Floyd Mayweather for wanting to box MMA fighters.

[autotag]Saul Alvarez[/autotag], the champion boxer best known as “Canelo,” can only laugh off [autotag]Floyd Mayweather[/autotag]’s rumored 2020 comeback.

The two fought in 2013, when Mayweather defeated a 23-year-old Alvarez via majority decision. Since then, Alvarez has captured numerous boxing world titles, winning 11 fights with one draw, and Mayweather remains his only career blemish to date.

Mayweather previously came out of retirement in 2017 to box former UFC double champion Conor McGregor, taking him out in the 10th round. But “Money” proceeded to retire once again after that, though it appears that retirement is also going to be short-lived. Mayweather recently announced he is aiming for a return in 2020 and will be working alongside UFC president Dana White. But exactly what Mayweather has planned in his return remains a bit of a mystery.

Speaking to TMZ, Alvarez said he doubts Mayweather will ever rematch him, and mocked him for going after MMA fighters.

“He’s not going to fight with me,” Alvarez said. “Don’t worry, no. He’s going to take an MMA fighter.”

Alvarez is admittedly a bit limited in his knowledge of English, but he surely can cut a promo. Highly doubtful it will be enough to lure Mayweather into a rematch, though, but no harm in a little fun. Alvarez for one, is certainly not a fan of the MMA crossover, recently dismissing Jorge Masvidal’s offer.
