Jake Paul plans to call out Canelo Alvarez after Mike Tyson fight, eyes ‘biggest upset’ in boxing

“I want to show the world that all the sh*t I’ve been talking about beating Canelo is actually true,” Jake Paul said.

[autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag] has big plans after fighting [autotag]Mike Tyson[/autotag].

Paul (10-1, 7 KOs) takes on 58-year-old boxing legend Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) in a Netflix special event Friday at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The bout is scheduled for eight, 2-minute rounds.

If Paul delivers on his promise to finish Tyson, he will re-divert his attention to [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag], who retained his super middleweight title with a dominant win over Edgar Berlanga in September.

“I do (have a callout). It’s Canelo,” Paul said on the “TimboSugarShow podcast with Sean O’Malley and Tim Welch. “This moment will prove that I’m the face of boxing, the largest attraction. Me vs. Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight championship of the world is the biggest fight, arguably even bigger than me vs. Tyson. It makes so much sense. Canelo is on his way out. He’s going to want a payday, and I want to show the world that all the sh*t I’ve been talking about beating Canelo is actually true.

“I’ll have the biggest upset in the sport of boxing, and we will fight to really see who actually is the face of boxing because, after this event, I’m going to claim it. I beat his gate record in Texas, I’m beating the ticket sales, all of that stuff. So, the numbers and the data show it. I have more followers than him, etc. And now this is going to be the most watched fight of this century, so I’m going to be the new money magnet.”

According to FanDuel, Paul is a -215 favorite over former heavyweight champion Tyson, who’s a +172 underdog.

Alexa Grasso excited to share UFC 306 fight day with Canelo in Las Vegas: ‘It’s inspiring’

UFC women’s flyweight champion Alexa Grasso is inspired by fighintg on the same day as hometown boxing superstar Canelo.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Alexa Grasso[/autotag] will defend her UFC women’s flyweight title on a busy weekend highlighting Mexican culture in combat sports.

At UFC 306, Grasso (16-3-1 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC) shares the cage with former champion Valentina Shevchenko for the third time. The fight itself is historic, but so is the event at the venue, which will be a first-ever live sports broadcast from Sphere.

In addition, Noche UFC is a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, which will focus heavily on the country’s culture and combat sports history.

All of this is exciting for Grasso, but she is also motivated by what will happen simultaneously just a few doors down the Strip at T-Mobile Arena.

Boxing superstar [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] will compete against Edgar Berlanga on the same night as Noche UFC, making for an exciting night of fights, especially for Mexico.

While some may think it’s an oversaturation of combat sports on one night, as fans may have to make a tough choice with their viewing decisions, Grasso is excited.

“For me, honestly, this is really cool,” Grasso told reporters during a UFC 306 open workout media scrum. “I’ve been a big fan of Canelo. We are from the same city, he’s from Guadalajara too. I’ve been watching his whole career and he’s a big role model for athletes in Mexico, especially combat sports.

“So, for me, it’s huge. Like, fighting on the same day as him? It’s inspiring.”

You can check out Grasso’s full media scrum in the video above.

‘I hope there’s no hard feelings’: Kamaru Usman clears the air with Canelo Alvarez over past boxing callouts

Kamaru Usman clears the air with boxing star Canelo Alvarez over his past callouts pushing for a cross over fight.

[autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] and [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] are now cool and have cleared the air on their contentious past on social media.

A few years ago, when Usman reigned as UFC welterweight champion, he relentlessly called for a cross-over boxing match against Alvarez, who’s arguably the biggest star in boxing and considered by many as the pound-for-pound best of recent years. Alvarez, who never paid too much attention to the MMA world, would sometimes ignore Usman and sometimes clap back, saying he was just in need of a “payday.”

Now, a few years later, after their back-and-forth, Usman had Alvarez on his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast ahead of Alvarez’s Sept. 14 title defense against Edgar Berlanga and made sure to address the “elephant in the room” right off the bat.

“Obviously, when I was champion in the UFC, I was welterweight champion of the world, and you dominated as champion in boxing, there were some talks about potentially fighting,” Usman said. “First and foremost, I’m a fan of yours. I’m a fan of your work and everything you’ve done in the sport of boxing. I think it’s important for us to clear the air and have this type of conversation.”

Usman explained to Alvarez that the callout was never personal. It came from wanting to test Canelo and wanting to secure a big money fight.

“Obviously we’re competitors, and we want to compete, and of course when we started this competition in our respective sports, we didn’t necessarily get in it for money, you get into it to be the best at it, to compete. But then you get to a certain point where, ‘Hey, the paycheck makes it worthwhile.’ All the years that you work, and you put into it, the paycheck makes it worthwhile.

“You were in a spot where you were dominating everyone to the point the question was being asked, ‘Who else can challenge this guy? Is there anything that anyone has for him?’ At that moment, I threw my hat in, let me at least give him a different look. I’m not a technical boxer. I feel like you know all the pieces of the puzzle when it comes to boxing. … I felt that mine is different. I’m a mixed martial artist. I’m an MMA fighter. They might come slower, but the combinations might be different from what you’re used to. So that’s why I threw my hand in the mix and said I’d love to give him something different, a different look. And who knows, at the end of the day, we know as fighters anything can happen in a fight. That’s what it was. I hope there’s no hard feelings because I respect you as a fighter.”

Alvarez was receptive to Usman’s comments and said they were cool. He did stick to his guns in saying that Usman has no business with him in the ring, but also vice versa.

“No hard feelings,” Alvarez said. “I think this is a beautiful sport, and you’re the best in your sport, and I’m the best in my sport, and I respect that. We’re never going to know because we never made the fight, but I always said that’s why you chose MMA and I chose boxing. If I go in there with you in an MMA fight, it’s going to be different. If you come to my sport, it’s going to be different. I know the mentality of, ‘I can do it. I can do this,’ but when you go in the ring it’s very different.”

Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga referee, judges revealed

The referee and judges for Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas – the same night as UFC 306 – have been determined.

One of boxing’s biggest stars, [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] returns Sept. 14 to battle [autotag]Edgar Berlanga[/autotag], and now it’s set who will be the third man inside the ring with them.

At Thursdays’ monthly Nevada Athletic Commission meeting, members voted and approved Harvey Dock as the referee for the Mexican Independence Day weekend clash at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Additionally, Max De Luca, Steve Weisfeld and David Sutherland will serve as judges for the 12-round WBC Super Middleweight title fight.

Dock will be paid $10,000 for the fight, and judges will each get $8,000.

The officials for the event’s non-title bouts won’t be revealed until fight night.

The boxing event will go head-to-head with UFC 306: Riyadh Season Noche UFC, which takes place a short distance away at Sphere.

That card will be headlined by two title fights: Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili and Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko. The officials for those fights were also determined Thursday.

UFC champ Sean O’Malley relishes chance to steal headlines from Canelo Alvarez

Sean O’Malley is “feeling good as f*ck” about his UFC 306 fight with Merab Dvalishvili and going head-to-head with Canelo Alvarez.

UFC bantamweight champion [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] relishes the opportunity to go head-to-head with [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag].

On the same night O’Malley (17-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) defends his title against [autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in the UFC 306 main event at Sphere in Las Vegas, Alvarez (61-2-2) defends his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga (22-0) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

One of the biggest stars in the UFC, O’Malley wants to ensure that it’s his name everyone is talking about after Sept. 14.

“I’m so f*cking excited for this fight,” O’Malley said on his “TimboSugaShow” podcast. “I wasn’t actually very excited for the Aljo fight. I was stressed about that fight, just because my rib (injury), my training camp wasn’t the best. It was good for what we had, and then it’s like, this is hard. This fight, I’m feeling good as f*ck. I love this matchup. He’s got a 10-fight winning streak. It’s a big fight. It’s at the Sphere, it’s in competition with boxing, which is just kind of an extra little layer.

“When it comes to Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, who are they talking about? Are they talking about Canelo? Are they talking about the boxing fight? Or are they talking about the absolute dominating, beautiful, masterful, masterclass performance that I put on Merab and the viral knockout that came with it? Or are they talking about a 36-minute Canelo boxing fight that was kind of fire? That’s what excites me. It’s the competition of who are they talking about Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Who stole the headlines? Me.”

O’Malley, who dethroned Dvalishvili’s training partner Aljamain Sterling with a viral knockout at UFC 292, notched his first title defense with a shutout of Marlon Vera at UFC 299 in March.

Canelo Alvarez isn’t worried about going head-to-head with UFC 306 in Las Vegas

Canelo Alvarez doesn’t expect his Sept. 14 boxing match to struggle for business just because it’s going head-to-head with the UFC.

[autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] doesn’t expect his boxing match to struggle for business just because it’s going head-to-head with the UFC.

Alvarez (61-2-2) defends his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga (22-0) on Sept. 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the same day that Sean O’Malley (17-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) defends his bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in the UFC 306 main event at Sphere. Both events are taking place to celebrate Mexican Independence Day weekend.

One of boxing’s biggest stars, Alvarez is unfazed by the UFC as competition. Noche UFC is sponsored by Riyadh Season, which was launched by Saudi Arabian Royal Court adviser turned boxing promoter Turki Alalshikh. Alvarez and Alalshikh were recently involved in a public back-and-forth over a failed negotiation.

“It’s just different,” Alvarez said on the “MILLION DOLLAZ WORTH OF GAME” podcast. “Yeah, maybe other boxing matches (would suffer against the UFC). Maybe. Canelo is just different. I don’t care if the UFC is there. When Canelo fights, it’s different.”

This won’t be the first time Alvarez goes head-to-head with the UFC. In November 2019, DAZN delayed Alvarez’s superfight against WBO light heavyweight titleholder Sergey Kovalev by more than an hour to avoid clashing with UFC 244, which was headlined by a BMF title fight between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. Alvarez vs. Kovalev only started after Masvidal vs. Diaz concluded.

Oscar De La Hoya sounds off on ‘arrogant piece of sh*t’ Canelo for not working with Turki Alalshikh

Oscar De La Hoya had strong words for Canelo for not working with Turki Alalshikh, and accused him of ducking David Benavidez.

[autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag]’s former promoter [autotag]Oscar De La Hoya[/autotag] took time out to send a firey message to boxing’s biggest star for not wanting to negotiate with Turki Alalshikh.

De La Hoya and Alvarez have repeatedly exchanged heated words over the years since falling out. In a social media video De La Hoya calls “Clap Back Thursdays,” the Hall of Fame boxer took aim at Canelo for not wanting to do business with Alalshikh, who has quickly become a major player when it comes to booking the best boxing matchups possible.

Alalshikh recently shared he was no longer interested in trying to make a fight with Canelo against Terence Crawford. The message prompted a public argument between Canelo and Alalshikh.

“So it turns out, I’m not the only one who thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of sh*t,” De La Hoya said in a video on X. “Turki Alalshikh recently revealed that Canelo refused to meet with him in person, and isn’t entertaining any deals to be done with him.

“Why? Because he’s out-priced himself so much that the Saudis don’t even want to deal with him. And it’s all because he will do anything not to fight David Benavidez. Look, Turki is trying to make the best fights that everybody wants to see, and Canelo continues to take the fights that nobody wants to see.”

In what will be his second fight of the year after a unanimous decision win over Jaime Munguia in May, Canelo is scheduled to defend his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga on Sept. 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the same day Noche UFC takes place at Sphere.

The scheduling conflict has been a frequent topic among boxing and MMA circles, especially for fans who like to watch both combat sports. De La Hoya, as he continued his rant, expressed his opinion about the date, and Berlanga, too.

“He claims he has a whole country behind him?” De La Hoya said. “Edgar, bro, You’re from Brooklyn. I think I’m more Puerto Rican than you are, and I only lived there for six years. Puerto Rico doesn’t claim you, bro.

“And as I said weeks ago, this fight will not do well on Sept. 14. Not only because the matchup is OK, but because they’re going up against the UFC’s debut at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Now that’s a spectacle that everyone and their mother has been waiting to see since it opened up about a year ago. And who is funding it and making it all happen? Turki Alalshikh.”

In conclusion, De La Hoya turned his focus back to Canelo, who he urged to reconsider his position about not wanting to be in business with Alalshikh.

“Canelo, you’re really making the wrong enemies,” De La Hoya said. “But you know what? F*ck you.”

Report: Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga to go head-to-head with Noche UFC in Las Vegas

Combat sports fans might have a choice to make in September, or at the very least will face an expensive Saturday.

Combat sports fans might have a choice to make this September, or at the very least are facing an expensive Saturday in front of the boob tube.

According to a report from ESPN boxing reporter Mike Coppinger, [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] (61-2-2), arguably the most popular boxer in the world, is wrapping up a deal for a super middleweight title defense against Edgar Berlanga (22-0).

But on this one, the fight itself might be less intriguing than the date: The fight reportedly will take place Sept. 14 in Las Vegas, presumably at T-Mobile Arena, on the same night the UFC puts on UFC 306 a couple clicks up the Strip at The Sphere.

The UFC 306 card is expected to be a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, which takes place Sept. 16. “Noche UFC” now will go head-to-head against Alvarez, from Mexico, in a fight that will pit Mexico against Puerto Rico, where Berlanga is from.

The UFC reportedly will have at least two title fights on the card at The Sphere, but UFC CEO Dana White recently said to expect just 10 fights. A typical UFC pay-per-view has 13 bouts.

The UFC is not likely to have trouble selling out The Sphere for the event. In less than a year, it has become one of the most sought-after venues in entertainment, and the UFC will be putting on the first live combat sports event there.

The leading candidates to head up UFC 306 are a bantamweight title fight with champion Sean O’Malley and challenger Merab Dvalishvili and a women’s flyweight title fight with champ Alexa Grasso and her next challenger, but the promotion has not made any formal fight announcements.
