Tennessee running back to miss remainder of spring practices

Tennessee running back will miss the remainder of spring football practices.

Tennessee scrimmaged for the first time during spring practices at Neyland Stadium on Wednesday.

Fourth-year head coach Josh Heupel met with media following the Vols’ scrimmage. He discussed sophomore running back Cameron Seldon being out for the remainder of spring practices.

“With Cam, unfortunate, just the early part of spring ball, had an injury to his shoulder, had surgery on it,” Heupel said. “We’ll kind of evaluate where we’re at as the rehab process gets started and base our decisions off of that and kind of where we project where he’s going to be.”

Heupel also discussed opportunities for other running backs with the 6-foot-2, 222-pound Seldon being out.

“D-Samp (Dylan Sampson) has been awesome with just energy, leadership, maturity and the understanding of our offense,” Heupel said. “The young guys continue to take steps forward.

“Khalifa (Keith) has done a really nice job. He’s been extremely physical, was today as well. I thought he finished going forward all the time. DeSean Bishop, a young guy that got nicked up last year, his growth inside of our program, for him to get back on the field and showcase his skillset, handled the rehab process extremely well and I love the competition that he’s brought. (Patrick) Wilk and Hunter (Barnes) have done a really nice job.”

Cameron Seldon’s ability in kick return game detailed ahead of Week 1

Cameron Seldon’s ability in kick return game detailed ahead of Week 1.

No. 10 Tennessee will open its 2023 season on Saturday versus Virginia.

Kickoff between the Vols and Cavaliers is slated for noon EDT (ABC) at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Third-year running backs coach Jerry Mack met with media on Tuesday and discussed freshman Cameron Seldon.

The 6-foot-2, 222-pound Seldon is listed as the fourth running back and a co-starter as a kick returner on the Vols’ depth chart ahead of playing Virginia.

Mack discussed Seldon’s ability in the kick return game.

“I think the biggest thing is first of all, he is a guy with an innate ability to catch the football,” Mack said. “He played a lot of receiver in high school, so that carries over obviously as a kickoff returner. If you want him to return punts, he probably could do that as well.

“The second thing is, we use the term running through the smoke. Big guy that’s 6-foot, 6-one, 220 pounds right now, and he’s not really afraid of any contact. He will run through those small creases, especially on kickoff return when you got those guys on kickoff team coming at you full speed. Cam has that ability to run through the smoke. He understands his strength and he’s a big, strong, strong guy who can do that.”

Josh Heupel discusses Cameron Seldon’s role during spring practices

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel discusses Cameron Seldon’s role during spring football practices.

Cameron Seldon signed with Tennessee during the early signing period Dec. 21, 2022.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Seldon is from Northumberland High School in Heathsville, Virginia.

He is taking part in spring practices at Tennessee as an early enrollee freshman.

Following the Vols’ first spring practice on Monday, third-year head coach Josh Heupel discussed Seldon and his role with Tennessee.

“We’ll start him in the backfield,” Heupel said of Seldon. “That’s where he’s going to get the majority of his work. His skillset allows for him to do different things. We’ll increase his exposure out on the perimeter intentionally throughout the course of spring. We’ll start it spoon-fed, and then he’ll grow from there.

“The thing that’s important for him is all the things that take place at the running back position, obviously your run game, run schemes, he’s going to understand some pop-pass concepts because of them being involved in it. With the protection part of it, I think it’s important that he starts there and is able to grow from that starting point.”

Cameron Seldon gives Vols ‘a chance to do some really fun stuff’

Cameron Seldon gives the Vols “a chance to do some really fun stuff.”

Cameron Seldon signed with Tennessee during the early signing period Dec. 21.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound wide receiver is from Northumberland High School in Heathsville, Virginia.

Tennessee’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle met with media Wednesday and discussed Seldon.

“He gives you a chance to do some really fun stuff,” Halzle said of Seldon. “Obviously, with a young guy that’s first time in the building, you got to be careful to not bog somebody down and overload them with everything you could do. You got to get him good at one thing first.

“Where he ends up starting out, as we get through our pre-spring stuff before we get on the field for spring ball, we’ll make that decision more definitive as we roll based on what he can handle, what he does well, what he doesn’t do well. Then once he gets one thing cemented — okay he’s really good at this — now you can start growing a guy like that’s extra roles. Really whatever they can handle, starting at a young age and moving on through his time throughout the program.”
