6 offensive coordinator targets for Browns after firing Alex Van Pelt

These six assistant coaches should be on the top of the Browns’ OC wishlist

On Wednesday, the Browns decided it was time for the offense to go in a different direction as they let offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt go after four seasons with the team. The move was surprising but when you think about it, it does make sense that the offense must change. With Deshaun Watson returning, it is clear that a fresh voice is needed to reshape the offense to fit his skill set.

Cleveland tried to mold the offense and it just didn’t produce the results they hoped this year, though Watson was playing better before his injury. They need a new voice that can help to reshape this offense, someone with experience working with mobile quarterbacks or an innovative offensive mind from a successful coaching tree.

Kevin Stefanski showed a willingness to make changes last year by moving on from Joe Woods, and this year deciding that as good as Van Pelt is, he just isn’t the one to help take this offense in a different direction.

Here are six potential candidates that make the most sense as the team searches for its new OC.

Colts hire Cam Turner as QB coach

Turner worked his way up from offensive assistant to QB coach/passing game coordinator between 2018-2022 for the Cardinals.

One of the coaches on the Arizona Cardinals’ coaching staff from the last several seasons not returning in 2023 has a new job. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday that the Indianapolis Colts were hiring Cam Turner to be their quarterbacks coach.

Turner had been on the Cardinals’ coaching staff since 2018.

Turner has worked with quarterbacks like Cam Newton and Kyler Murray. In Indianapolis, they are expected to draft a quarterback.

Turner first joined the Cardinals in 2018 as an offensive assistant under head coach Steve Wilks. He became an assistant quarterbacks coach under Kliff Kingsbury in 2019, was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2021 and was promoted to passing game coordinator/quarterbacks in 2022.

4 things to know about Colts’ new QB Coach Cam Turner

Here are three things to know about Colts new QBs coach Cam Turner.

Perhaps one of the important under-the-radar hires for the new coaching staff under Shane Steichen was the new quarterback coach.

The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly hired Cam Turner to fill that role, and he will have the important task of making sure the incoming rookie quarterback is ready to play for the opening game.

Let’s take a quick look at four things to know about the new quarterbacks coach:

Report: Colts to hire Cam Turner as QBs coach

The Colts are reportedly hiring Cam Turner as the new QBs coach.

The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly hiring Cam Turner as the quarterbacks coach under new head coach Shane Steichen, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network on Wednesday.

With Steichen as the head coach and Jim Bob Cooter hired as the offensive coordinator, they bring in Turner as the quarterbacks coach after spending the last five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

Turner, 35, got his start coaching in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings as the assistant to the head coach for two seasons (2011-2012) under Leslie Frazier.

After going back to the collegiate ranks as Florida International’s quarterbacks and wide receivers coach (2013-2014), Turner returned to the NFL coaching circle as the assistant quarterbacks coach with the Carolina Panthers (2017, working closely with Cam Newton.

After the one-year stint in Charlotte, Turner joined the Cardinals coaching staff under Steve Wilks in 2018 and remaind on the staff when Kliff Kingsbury took over in 2019. He started out as an offensive assistant (2018) before getting a promotion to assistant quarterbacks coach (2019) and then held both roles simultaneously in 2020.

Turner was promoted to quarterbacks coach for the 2021 season and added co-passing game coordinator duties to his role in 2022.

Cardinals announce 2 coaching promotions, 1 coaching addition

Sean Kugler now becomes the top offensive assistant and Shawn Jefferson replaces David Raih as receivers coach.

The Arizona Cardinals announced some moves on head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s staff. Two coaches were given promotions and another was hired.

The team announced that Shawn Jefferson was hired as receivers coach. Their last receivers coach, David Raih, reportedly will be the new offensive coordinator at Vanderbilt. Jefferson previously was receivers coach and assistant head coach for the New York Jets under Adam Gase until Gase and his staff was let go after this past season.

Offensive line coach Sean Kugler was given an additional title. He is now also the run game coordinator. He has been key in the Cardinals’ rushing attack the last two seasons and now gets the title to go with it.

Passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tom Clements reportedly is retiring. No one will gain the title of passing game coordinator but Cam Tuner, who was previously the team’s assistant quarterbacks coach, has been promoted to be the quarterbacks coach. He enters his third season on the coaching staff.

Based on how the team has laid out the coaching hierarchy on the official team site, it appears they are not planning on adding anyone with the title of offensive coordinator.

Clements was listed previously alongside special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Jeff Rodgers and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Clements was much like an offensive coordinator. With Kugler’s promotion, he is listed where Clements was, showing as the top offensive assistant to head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Kingsbury will apparently do more to coordinate the passing game and Kugler will be like the offensive coordinator, handling the run game and offensive line.
