Oklahoma offers 2023 defensive end Avion Carter out of Amarillo, Texas

Oklahoma has extended an offer to class of 2023 defensive end Avion Carter out of Amarillo, Texas.

Oklahoma has kept very busy on the recruiting trail with lots of offers going out this week. Another has come in on Friday with one being extended to class of 2023 defensive end Avion Carter out of Tascosa High School in Amarillo, Texas.

The Sooners are the eighth to offer Carter and join fellow Big 12 programs Baylor, TCU, Texas and Texas Tech. Despite being still two years away from college ball, the size is there for Carter as he comes in at 6-4 and 240 pounds which is nearly identical to what current Oklahoma defensive lineman Isaiah Thomas was when he came out in 2017.

His size and strength make him a matchup nightmare in high school, frequently able to blow right by the man blocking him to get into the backfield and make things happen. Currently unrated by the major recruiting outlets, he will have the chance to make more of a name for himself over the next couple of seasons.

Oklahoma DL Coach Calvin Thibodeaux nominated for Broyles Award for top assistant

Oklahoma defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux has been nominated for the Broyles Award that is given to the nation’s top assistant coach.

Oklahoma defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux has been named as a nominee for the 2020 Broyles Award that is presented to the college football’s top assistant coach.

Thibodeaux is one of 56 coaches nominated out of an eligible 1,270 assistants around the country.

The Sooners defensive line has been a huge part of the defense’s turnaround this season has been without question the strength of the team, spear-headed by Ronnie Perkins, Isaiah Thomas and Perrion Winfrey.

A 43-member selection committee made up of former coaches, broadcasters and members of the Football Writers Association of America will narrow the group down to 15 semifinalists and then five finalists before settling on a winner.

Last year’s winner was LSU‘s Joe Brady, who after his sensational season that resulted in a national title took his talents to the NFL to become the new offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers.

Thibodeaux will continue to make his case to be the next winner when Oklahoma heads to Morgantown this weekend to take on West Virginia.

Oklahoma DL Marcus Hicks reportedly hurt in fall camp, per multiple reports

The injury bug is hitting Oklahoma hard as another Sooners defender has reportedly gone down within the first week of fall camp.

The injury bug is hitting Oklahoma hard during its fall camp ahead of the 2020 season.

Linebacker Caleb Kelly had gone down earlier in the week, as well as quarterback Tanner Mordecai, who was battling with Spencer Rattler to be the starting quarterback for the Sooners.

This time, it’s the defensive line getting hit.

According to a report from SoonerScoop.com, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Marcus Hicks went down with an Achilles injury. It was later confirmed by Sports’ Illustrated Oklahoma affiliate AllSooners.

Hicks came to Oklahoma out of the star-studded 2019 recruiting class. He chose the Sooners over a host of the top schools including Michigan.

It was expected for Hicks to provide quality depth this year at the defensive tackle position LaRon Stokes and Jalen Redmond play before making a bigger impact in 2021. Depending on the length of this injury, it could be another year spent training and in the weight room for the former four-star defensive lineman.

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley has yet to comment on any injury so far in fall camp.

Alex Grinch’s front seven continues to build.

Class of 2020 JUCO defensive tackle Joshua Ellison just committed to Oklahoma and will sign with the Sooners on Wednesday.

Ellison was a four-star recruit in the 2019 class and was verbally committed to Texas A&M before heading to Blinn Community College in Brenham, Texas.

The College Station native stands 6-foot-3 and 285 pounds. Ellison chose Oklahoma over Texas A&M and Texas Tech, his only offers coming out of Blinn CC.

In high school, Ellison had offers from Baylor, Kansas, Tennessee and Indiana among others. He was the No. 25 defensive tackle in the nation and the No. 52 overall player in the state of Texas in his high school recruiting class according to Rivals last year.

Ellison joins four-stars Perrion Winfrey, Reggie Grimes and three-star Noah Arinze on the Sooners’ 2020 defensive line recruiting class.

Oklahoma was the No. 11 recruiting class in 2020 prior to Ellison’s class, according to Rivals.

Oklahoma lands commitment from 4-star defensive end Reggie Grimes

Momentum is building up on the recruiting trail leading into National Signing Day. OU has picked up its second recruit in as many days.

Momentum is building up on the recruiting trail leading into National Signing Day for Oklahoma.

A day after landing three-star linebacker Shane Whitter (Williams High School; Burlington, North Carolina), defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux have hauled in the 42nd best player* in the country in class of 2020 defensive end Reggie Grimes (Ravenwood High School; Brentwood, Tennessee) on Thanksgiving.

The 6-foot-5, 240 pound defensive end chose Oklahoma over South Carolina and earlier offers from Alabama, LSU and Ohio State.

Grimes officially visited Norman, Oklahoma, for the Oct. 18-20 weekend when the Sooners beat West Virginia 52-14.

He becomes the 19th commitment for Oklahoma’s 2020 recruiting class. Heading into Grimes’ commitment, the Sooners had the 14th ranked recruiting class in the country and are now primed for a huge push heading into National Signing Day.

This is the second straight year Oklahoma has landed a recruit from Tennessee as freshman defensive back Woodi Washington hailed from Murfreesboro. Washington and Grimes are from the greater Nashville, Tennessee, area.

Grimes is the third member of Thibodeaux’s 2020 defensive class, joining Noah Arinze and Perrion Winfrey.

It is uncertain just how many more recruits Oklahoma can take for the 2020 class with four Sooners’ defenders already into the transfer portal and the future of Kenneth Murray undetermined with the NFL looming.

The first National Signing Day is on Dec. 18.
